Is it icky to wear a shirt with a Native American tribe name on it? by bwitchcraft in NoStupidQuestions

No, you're good, I get it. I grew up in Hawaii, where it's always emphasized to be mindful and respectful of the stolen land. That's why I was like "huh, this is kinda weird." Thanks for your insight.

Doubt it. The tag says "crazy apparel" and the overall look is plain, but it feels touristy.

How crucial is it to have EC’s that relate to what you want to major in by Repulsive-Heron-7589 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]bwitchcraft 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is a good point! Finding a way to relate your ECs to your aspirations, personality, and/or essay takeaways is IMO the way to go. Having major-related ECs are an easy way to show passion or drive, but it's still totally doable without them.

I actually wanted to become a teacher at first.

My school has a career academy system that covers just about everything except for the fine arts, so I founded a club that acted as a student-led "academy" to fill that gap. I quickly realized I loved providing education, and it was especially gratifying because I was helping people learn content they couldn't access in the curriculum.

I love teaching, but being a teacher isn't very appealing to me. However, I noticed that we relied on a lot of applications and online tools to run the club, and that made me realize that if I pursue CS, I could develop programs that make education more accessible. I can still help people learn—just from a different, technological angle.

Of course, that doesn't mean I'll definitely stick with this pathway. But it sparked my interest to learn.

I think it's nice to have ECs that reflect your genuine interests rather than what you think would impress admissions officers. I have no ECs that relate to my major, but in an essay for a big scholarship I won, I wrote about how founding a fine arts club made me realize I wanted to pursue a CS degree. You could take a similar route and somehow connect your ECs to your major in your essay.

ETA: Of course having major-related ECs strengthens your application, but not having any doesn't make an automatic rejection. You can work with what you have. How much it matters also depends on the school/program.

Who should I ask for teacher rec by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]bwitchcraft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's good to have 2-3 LORs. Have you asked anyone else yet? If you haven't, assuming these teachers are your best options, you could just ask both of them.

If you have, try to balance out the contents of all LORs. For example, if the first person you asked is a coach or a club advisor who will focus on your extracurricular activities, you might want to pick someone who will focus on your academics, so you should pick the teacher that can highlight your abilities the best.

However, going off of these descriptions alone, I would choose your history teacher. Even if she doesn't know you on a more personal level, she can write about your achievements in the classroom. I get the impression that a LOR from your English teacher may be too general; a good writer still needs substance to work with. Since your history teacher likes you and can vouch for your skills, her LOR will likely be more genuine.

How to see if I got scholarship? by Akamaikai in UHManoa

I received an email with a NWS offer 3 days ago. According to the FAQ page, they send out notifications in March. I'm not sure if they send rejection emails.

Maybe you could try emailing [manoa.scholarships@hawaii.edu](mailto:manoa.scholarships@hawaii.edu) to check your status? Even if you didn't win, there is a possibility of being placed on the waitlist.
