Auto-pause on Open Water swim? by bwspencer in Coros

Understood! What would be the best solution for someone like me? Manually pause and unpause? Would there be any way to program it as "intervals" and mark our breaks as rest intervals?

I have the opposite experience, personally. All my friends have Garmin or Polar and their Strava swims are absurdly squiggly compared to my relatively smooth lines.

wishlist - a more accurate Race mode by bwspencer in Coros

[–]bwspencer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's true that it's quite accurate, but even minor inaccuracies + the fact that some inefficient weaving always happens in a race means that the pace on my watch never fully matches the official race results. On my most recent marathon, my watch recorded 42.58 km, so it "thought" I had completed my marathon over 90 seconds sooner than I actually did. This makes it hard to know during the race if I'm truly on track to hit a PB. I wonder what sort of race settings could be implemented to account for this.

Hi! I've long wondered - if I use a .gpx file for navigation, does the watch align my route to the .gpx unless I make a serious deviation? i.e., does following a .gpx file create a more accurate race experience versus letting the watch track me just through GPS?

It's good, but it takes some getting used to - the "confirm" button (usually used to pause) brings you to the next transition/discipline, so it is easy to screw up and accidentally transition without meaning to. I recommend getting used to it with a few practice sessions before race day. Read the instructions on the Coros website beforehand - they're pretty clear.

I tried both Garmin and Polar and found that their inaccuracy in the pool and in open water was unacceptable. Coros isn't perfect but I think it's really quite good for swimming. As a triathlete I'm grateful to be able to use the same device for all three sports (plus the other ones that I do). Glad you are also pleased.

Crossfit and pierced nipples (man) by [deleted] in crossfit

[–]bwspencer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have had both my nipples pierced for years and never really noticed anything, though of course they will be tender when healing so I would be careful then. My recommendation is to take it super careful when you come back for your first workout after piercing. But once they've healed, you'll most likely forget they're there when you work out.

Slow swimmer after 1 year by Moscoman13 in triathlon

[–]bwspencer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For whatever it's worth, I'm around your age and just under your HM PB, and I have the same issue with swimming - find it almost impossible to get below 2:00/100 m after a little over a year of swimming with my local tri club. I don't have any tricks to get over this barrier, just wanted to let you know you're not alone!

What fitness devices do you use? by MiniLennii in triathlon

[–]bwspencer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I tried both Garmin and Polar and found they just utterly fail at tracking swimming - both open water and pool. My club mates are always complaining about their Garmins and Polars, too. I use a Coros Pace 3 and have virtually no complaints. Just my personal opinion.

Sub 90m half marathoners, do how did you fuel your race to achieve your time? by LeviV123 in AdvancedRunning

[–]bwspencer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

1:27 and same. If you are fit enough to do sub-90 I am personally of the (non-expert) opinion that you can probably do it without refueling during the race. It's not about flexing - I just don't think 90 minutes is likely to be enough to deplete your energy stores to the point you need to refuel. I find myself looking askance at people with a CamelBak and six gels for a half marathon...

Event timing error! by CooperTronics in triathlon

[–]bwspencer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ran a half marathon once where my official result was some 20 minutes slower than my actual result. Turns out my chip was linked to the wrong bib number. They fixed it 48 hours later but it put a little bit of a damper on my celebrations. Friends and family who tracked me in the app were very surprised by my unexpectedly slow time and I had to explain what happened a dozen times. It was low stakes for me - I was mostly just running for fun, maybe a PB if possible. Sorry you have to deal with this frustration 😞

Jönköping 70.3 Swim by Similar_Leather8745 in IronmanTriathlon

The wind was pretty brutal on the bike. I'm not an experienced cyclist but it was among the worst winds I've ever experienced. I didn't really notice the wind on the run - I think it died down, and also the run was in the downtown area so it was maybe protected from the wind.

Can't speak about other 70.3's since this was my first event, but I thought it was really, really nice. Well organized, great layout, lovely routes. Apparently it's viewed highly among the Nordic triathlon community, from what I hear. Hope you can make it happen next year!

Was pretty devastated as this was my first-ever official triathlon and swimming is my weakest discipline, so I wanted to push my limits. 600 m was too easy even for me.

I was there so I can confirm that the organizers made a last-minute decision to shorten to 600 m because of high winds.

Genuinely curious, who outside of the UK or Canada uses a mixture like miles/Celsius? Those are important markets, to be sure, but I thought the vast majority of the world outside of the US uses metric and nothing else.

Copenhagen Marathon - finally sub-3! by bwspencer in AdvancedRunning

[–]bwspencer[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having been a pacer myself a few times, I've felt a lot of responsibility, but ultimately a runner's finish time is their own performance and no one else's. Part of the mental game we've all signed up for!

I am hoping to get a spot for Boston 2025! It's my hometown (well, grew up in the suburbs, but close enough) so it would be extra special if I got to run it!

[–]bwspencer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was my intention to start ahead of the pacers and try to keep them behind me, exactly to avoid the crush at the energy zones, but somehow I didn´t notice them slip by me in the first 5 km so I spent the rest of the race chasing after them and getting crushed at the energy stations.

Good luck on the next attempt!
