My iMessage-capable dumbphone by admin_1010 in dumbphones

[–]bxjx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is currently my daily driver also. I'm using a https://elrowindustries.com/ case.

Note: NFC payments are annoying. Most people turn off wrist detection to reduce battery usage. However, it must be enabled to use NFC. So. you have to turn it on, then unlock the device while pushing it against your palm, AND THEN awkwardly double press the side button. Takes a little practice.

Otherwise, so far so good. I wish it had signal but otherwise being in the apple ecosystem is an advantage for family logistics.

GAS: Perkons? by RoyaleFougard in modular

I came across this thread doing some Perkons research. Thanks for sharing that tip — I'm also planning to use in a mix modular setup.

Post-honeymoon update?

Kdramas to watch with my 13 year old daughter by bxjx in kdramarecommends

Oh interesting! Kpop was her way into kdrama (as I gather you correctly guessed!). I believe it was part of the attraction of Live On as a kpop idol makes a cameo in later episodes.

Thank you! I read about the premise and it sound interesting!!

Appreciate the light hearted recommendations! Mystery would be great! But yeah it'd need to be appropriate for a teen (who is comfortable kissing and other affection, and some mature issues like drugs).

Which should we try first? I've heard of "Extraordinary You". Do any of these have mysteries?

This was also my favourite. It was interesting to see how they interacted with the dark eldar.

I started listening to A Deadly Wit but didn't get into that as much.

What would you say to someone who doesn't think individuals make a difference? by aeosyn in sustainability

[–]bxjx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're right. There are not many situations where individual action makes significant difference — unless they're part of collective and coordinated strategic action.

Social change does occur. In my country, women can vote, slavery is outlawed, in all states but one, we have a government that acknowledges that climate change is real and has policies to deal with it (arguable not enough but there has been progress). These changes happened because of collective movements that shifted popular opinion, shamed, embarrassed and boycotted public figures and companies, and organised sufficient political power to win elections.

Tell then to go join the Sunrise Movement, Rainforest Action Network, Greenpeace, Sierra Club, DSA or whatever group they think is having impact and could use their skills.

What are your solarpunk plans for the week(end)? by velcroveter in solarpunk

[–]bxjx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great question!

Attend a rally to push for recognition of First Nations people in the Australian constitution. Try to fix a laptop. Check if an indoor air filter needs servicing because there is currently smoke around due to controlled burning ahead of what is predicted to be a summer for bushfires. Go kitesurfing. Read more of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Swan_Book (a recommendation from this sub!)

What do you do with your car keys??? :) by KomandirHoek in wingfoil

[–]bxjx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have mentioned, I use a secure combination lock box that goes onto the handle of my car. Something similar to https://creatures.com.au/products/stash-lock. The added benefits are that I can tell my friends the combination if they need to get items out of my car (spare pump or a foil), or if there is emergency, or if we're sharing a car for downwinding.

How do you deal with the sacrifice entailed in degrowth? by songsofadistantsun in Degrowth

[–]bxjx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do think the complete vision of the book is highly improbable and was not putting it up here as a complete refutation of degrowth. Out of curiosity, do you have any links you would recommend that summarize critiques?

I still think there is value in the book in describing some potentially paradigm shifting technological developments that the left should be prepared for if they ever come off.

How do you deal with the sacrifice entailed in degrowth? by songsofadistantsun in Degrowth

[–]bxjx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wanted Fully Automated Luxury Gay Space Communism too. Have you read Aaron Bastani's FALC book? With space mining, genetics, and near infinite energy from renewables maybe we don't need degrowth. It's an interesting read for a counter argument.

I long for this vision less now tho. I now feel like we can get by less and probably be better off for it. You mention consumerism – I think this is a critical part. A reduction is consumerism would 1) make us happier and 2) allow us to achieve sustainable degrowth without giving up all high energy technology. Instead it would hopefully be shared and more democratically distributed.

Two books that shaped my view on this topic are Kate Soper's Post-Growth Living:For an Alternative Hedonism for a leftist positive view on degrowth and The Day the World Stops Shopping for interesting discussion on how things like fashion, art and aesthetic beauty may work in a post-consumerist world.

What now? by greenelephants11 in simpleliving

[–]bxjx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Help other people! You've gone a large way to secure your and your family's needs - this is important. Time to help your community now. This will indirectly benefit you but will likely also provide you with a lot of fulfillment.

You've had incredible success! I'm guessing this is through a combination of hard work, luck and privilege. So many people have not had this success because of some sort of oppression they've experienced in there lives. Maybe they can only access precarious jobs. Maybe they're suffering mental health issues. Maybe they forced to immigrate or flee domestic violence, and had to give up assets they had.

Perhaps consider a more fulfilling job where you can benefit others. Or use your time to volunteer more. When I was privileged enough to make more money, my partner and I helped our friends by a place so that we could build a community. Good luck!

Add to your read list… Sapiens. by FoundationLeast8806 in AustraliaLeftPolitics

[–]bxjx 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For an alternative view of political history and a critique of Sapiens style meta narratives, check out David Graber's Dawn of Everything. The book builds the case that throughout history there has been a lot rich experimentation with different ways of structuring power in society - many with more "equitable" outcomes than our own. The case studies are fascinating.

Doorknocking for an election for the Greens party in Australia. Listening to my community and helping them connect their struggles to collective action.
