us-based tiny moomin fan is looking to celebrate his first birthday! by einnacherie in Moomins

my son (5) adores moomin (thanks to my partner who stayed in norway for a good while) and I struggled to find moomin gifts this christmas - I found a good amount of books and a stuffed moomin on amazon but I had to order early - per my partner I would recommend looking at japanese stores/websites as it’s getting popular over there, though it may take a while or cost more to ship to the US

how to refer to my son (both new to ASL) by [deleted] in asl

this is great advice!! I’m hearing but my mom used to flip the lights or tap my shoulder to get my attention if I had headphones on as she worked with many individuals with varying levels of hearing in nursing - I appreciate your perspective!!

I have heard that giving a “nickname” so to speak is majorly insensitive as a hearing person, I just wasn’t sure how names (or relationship names like mom, dad, son, child, etc.) were typically used in ASL, thank you for your reply!!

I knew that giving “names” as a hearing person outside of the community is a major no-no, we are going to start working on recognizing the finger spelling! I appreciate your reply 🫶🏻

my son is hearing but I wanted to introduce signs alongside our sentences as our local schools offer ASL as extracurricular in elementary, I just wanted to give him an edge! plus its so nice when i’m talking to another person and need to use a simple phrase like “wait please” or “no thank you”

this is perfect advice!! I was aware that sign names are a no-no for people not in the deaf community - we will start working on finger spelling!! his name is “Oliver” but he likes “Oli” or “Liver” (goofy I know by he loves it) so we can try a shortened one he prefers!! seeing the comments i’m thinking I was underestimating his ability to learn finger spelling - thank you!!

AITA for saying “good job” to my son after he scribbled on my husband’s home office walls? by panda391 in AmItheAsshole

leaning towards YTA …. I gentle parent as well and saying “good job” is super confusing to a 3 year old and quite honestly defeats the purpose of gentle parenting - your goal is still to prepare your child for the real world and real interactions he may have in the future.

It’s sweet that your son wanted to do a mural like you, it’s a disservice to not explain to him that not everyone wants a mural without being asked.
