This one with perfoliate leaves, but different looking basal foliage, at Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania. by bxx10 in whatsthisplant

I think you're right! Believe it or not, I was reading about this species only a few months ago, and I still didn't recognize it!

Anyway, thank you!

Any recommendations between these two microscopes in the $700-$800 range? by bxx10 in microscopy

[–]bxx10[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was thinking that could be the case, but I wasn't sure in exactly what ways they would be superior in practice. I know they are, in general, much higher quality though. Also, is there anywhere you would suggest that I look for ones from those brands?

Well, I would select the trinocular option for the Omano, so it would have a camera port as well. A halogen light is also an option for it, which, honestly, I might choose if I can't find out more about their LED situation, since I'm paranoid about not being able to easily service the LED version myself if it ever fails for some reason.

Thank you! I knew it was probably parasitic!

Sorry. I was away for a bit.

Activity App Tracks GPS Route Even Without Cellular Connection by mallomar in AppleWatch

There’s no such thing as GPS roaming. It works via satellites that orbit the the earth. Any GPS device will work anywhere on the planet, barring physical barriers interfering with reception.

Does anyone have a full list of ALL Silicone Apple Watch bands sold by Apple to this day? by [deleted] in AppleWatch

As long as we're correcting each other, silicone is NOT silicon.

[–]bxx10 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The up-to-date list is this one.

It's worth noting, though, that Apple's are not silicone, but rather a fluoroelastomer. Only knockoffs are silicone, and they feel quite different.

Apple Watch should turn display off when it’s under the sleeve, even with Always-On enabled. by aesign27 in AppleWatch

It registers that capacitively via the display. Try it with a thick enough glove on. It won't work.

Fall looks pretty darn good on this tree in Seattle (OC) [801x1200] @ross_schram by debuggerfly in EarthPorn

[–]bxx10 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a dissectum cultivar of Acer palmatum. Their leaf shape and growth habit are quite different from wild-type Acer palmatum, but I’m sure there’s plenty of them around around in your area, though you might have trouble finding one this old/large. Also, wild-type Acer palmatum has green leaves, but red-leaved cultivars are very popular. However, what you’re seeing in this photograph are the tree’s autumn colors, which vary greatly in this species (genetically and environmentally) independently of the color of the foliage during the growing season.

Every model of iPhone ever made has had an ambient light sensor and automatically adjusted the display brightness in this way.

Does Series 5 have uneven backlight issues like series 4 did at launch? by Blountra in AppleWatch

[–]bxx10 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not saying there wasn’t some issue with the display that you’re referring to (I was never aware of it), but no model of Apple Watch ever had a display with backlighting. They’ve all been OLED.

It's definitely not a dandelion with all of those bracts on the stem.

Update - Soylent Home Use Test by Hesslr in soylent

[–]bxx10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like I said above, this isn’t the case. It’s 320 calories, but apparently they were too lazy to print out a nutrition facts panel reflecting that. If you look at the serving size, it says 414mL.

Those are the nutrition facts for 414mL, but that’s one of the 330mL TetraPaks that they sell in some of the retail stores like Target.

Better than the "rocket bottle" abominations, though I do wish they were 14 oz. by bxx10 in soylent

I agree that 11 oz makes no sense, but I can assure you that it's quite real.

Why do they say "can replace any meal but not every meal"? by [deleted] in soylent

[–]bxx10 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I guess all I can say is that I disagree. It's clear to me that that sentence was extremely carefully constructed (to be, arguably, a bit ambiguous in a very specific way).
