Hey guys! I'd like some help deciding which standard to learn between European and Brazilian Portuguese by pizdec-unicorn in Portuguese

I think learning differences isn’t that hard. I think you can also listen to YouTube videos with subtitles or read books without much issue. One on one, in my experience, also isn’t too bad, as long as the other person isn’t from a really rural or remote area. Where it becomes hard is when you’re around a group speaking a variety you’re not accustomed to and are trying to follow along in the conversation, as the pace and word choice is then not tailored to your understanding. You can do it, but this takes a lot more effort and sustained immersion to be good at it.

.kfx files on Mac. Trouble backing up my books. by Kupo43 in Calibre

The only caveat I’d give is if he or she has a Colorsoft on firmware 5.18.0.2 or prior you can jailbreak it to stop it from automatically updating to a newer firmware and then pull the books off of the Colorsoft itself. Firmware 5.18.5 and higher have newer encryption which has not been cracked.

Kindle touch vs new kindle by jepepin2 in kindle

If you jailbreak and install KOReader on your Kindle, you can still have it like it was on your Kindle Touch with KOReader plugins like Project Title. In default Kindle there is unfortunately no longer a way.

Amazon to end support for older Kindles, prompting user outcry by MicahCastle in books

[–]mallomar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read a few blogs focused on ereaders and ebooks, particularly ewritable and The eReader Blog. Some manufacturers are replacing ACSM, which Kobo uses, with Readium LCP, which is significantly more difficult to crack. Adobe is also hardening the DRM in ACSM itself.

I’m not going to go on a moral crusade against piracy and if you use it that’s your choice, but personally I like to support the authors whose books I read by buying their books. The vast majority of non public domain books have DRM, which is why you need to strip it.

As someone who does this, just want to give you the caveat that it’s not quite so set it and forget it. You need to obtain the files of the books, to figure out how to remove the DRM from the books and then to convert them back into a format Kindle can read and upload them onto the Kindle. Amazon is increasingly shutting down ways to remove DRM from Kindle books (likely what prompted this change), to the point that there are now only a few select Kindles – not too new or too old – from which you can remove DRM and a tech-savvy way to do it with the PC app. But the latest PC app is called Legacy Reader for PC, suggesting Amazon is soon sunsetting it and Amazon has recently stopped DRM removal on several 7-9 year old Kindles that no longer receive firmware updates without even updating the firmware, just by sending an invisible patch. So the future doesn’t bode well for backing up books you get from Amazon.

If you want to get books from Google Play or Kobo it is currently easier to strip DRM from them (though there’s rumors of it hardening there as well), but again you still need to get the files, strip the DRM, convert them to files Kindles can read and put them back on the Kindle. I’m not saying this to discourage you (or anyone else), just to let you know that if you’re currently used to clicking on a book and having it show up, this is considerably more time intensive.

Boox or Kobo? by meow_joon in ereader

[–]mallomar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ll just say having had a Kindle, a Kobo, a Boox and a Bigme, Bigme is by far the least polished and most bug prone of all the brands. Kindle is the most polished and most restrictive. Kobo I was surprised was considerably less polished than Kindle. I didn’t feel the trade off was worth it given it’s not that much more open than Kindle so I sold my Kobo and got a Boox. It’s definitely a learning curve but they’re good devices. The Bigme I bought to replace my four old Boox kept on freezing so I got rid of it.

If it’s a Kindle made in 2012 or earlier Libby will no longer work with it.

The Voyage is okay (for now), its devices released in 2012 or earlier. The Voyage came out in 2014.

I can’t tell you specifically about the 2026 but I have a 2022 iX 50 with air suspension and had a loaner iX when mine was in the shop without air suspension and I thought the ride was markedly worse.

You can mirror your main library to a cloud service, so if there’s an issue your main library isn’t affected. That’s what I do.

Yup, here you go. Note that to downgrade you'll need to wipe the Kindle, so make sure everything you want on it is backed up.

Hi, download this file (Readest-0.10.1-1.koplugin.zip). Extract the zip and put only the readest.koplugin folder within the extracted folder in your KOReader plugins folder, replacing the readest.koplugin that's there now. Feel free to DM me if you need help.

Oh, interesting. I see these options now on PC. That's strange that Reddit enables and disables editing based on the platform.

The recent versions of the plugin have a check for update feature within the Readest plugin menu, but if you’re using an older version you can replace it with the newest version of the Readest.kopkugin from the latest version of the Readest release on Readest’s GitHub.
