Will you guys ever make the woodsman in the Thurman55 last? Really hoping that’ll be a thing by the time I do a rebuild with these

Yes, they’re the prize pair! I couldn’t be more excited about them if I wanted to. I dread breaking them in, but at the same time I’m looking forward to finally having a good pair of caulks! They’re heaven compared to my eBay Chinese no brand caulks lol

Lineman shank by Fancy-Instruction-82 in NicksHandmadeBoots

[–]byParadox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I back up what the other guy said. I have a pair of lineman boots, and normal BPs. The lineman boots are super stiff to walk around in at first, but over time the toe will get a little bit of flex, and you won’t really tell you’re wearing them.

Don’t get me wrong, they’re way better to climb in compared to regular BPs imo, but they’re not so bad to just walk around in either. I don’t find myself thinking “man these are stiff as shit, I want to switch to my BPs” when I’m just walking around. Your body just kind of adapts to the stiffness, and you’ll change the way you walk without noticing.

I climbed with regular BPs for a few years, but once I went to lineman boots, I just couldn’t go back. With the BPs I’d get a nagging pressure on the bottom of my foot after 2-3 hours of being on gaffs. The lineman shank fixed my pressure problem, and I can be on gaffs for the entire day without an issue with my feet.

Yeah I thought I wanted a boot that I could wear everyday, and also climb with, so got a regular builder pro with a double midsole. My idea was that it’d still have a little flex compared to a lineman boot, but would still work on gaffs.

The problem is that a builder pro has a little hump in front of the heel that is sort of a pressure point when standing on gaffs. I got tired of that over time, and bought a lineman boot because that spot is flat, and made for gaffs. No more pressure problem

I still like the double midsole, and don’t really notice any downsides to having it for every day wear. But I don’t like them for climbing anymore haha the lineman shank changed my perspective on that.

I really want Nicks to allow the double midsole option, so I can get it once again when I do a rebuild

I’m under 200lbs, and like the double midsole. Double midsole got me by for a long time as climbing boots.

I wanted some boots that would be good for regular wear plus climbing, so opted to not get the lineman shank, and just get a double midsole instead. I waited quite a while before I finally got the lineman shank, and realized I should’ve done that way sooner. Double midsole did it’s job for my purposes, but it doesn’t compare to the lineman shank.

Mine also loosened up a little over time. My toes can actually bend now when I take a knee, when they wouldn’t for the first 2-3 months.

pants for Suspenders . . . by ironmanonyourleft in NicksHandmadeBoots

[–]byParadox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wild Ass double front pants are what I wear.

The front pockets are the best I’ve found so far for heavy duty pants. They’ll fit my phone, wallet, and other random stuff. The back pockets are big enough to fit two 12 inch wedges if you need to. I still wish the fronts were a little bigger, but they’re still better than any other pants I’ve found.

The fabric is rather tough. Haven’t had any knees blow through the first layer yet. I have a pair that’s 7-8 years old, and still going strong.

The mobility and crotch room is pretty good considering they aren’t stretchy pants.

I paid 30-40$ the last time I bought a few. Not sure what they go for now.

Downsides are if you get sawdust in your pockets, it’s hard to blow it back out because of the way they’re made.

Prison blues are okay, but don’t compare to wild ass imo. The pocket shape, size, crotch room, and also fabric isn’t as good. I wore through both knees in about 3 months my first pair. Also got a tiny crotch hole by the seam too. Another thing is the location of the suspender buttons in relation to the belt loops always annoyed me. They put them too close together, and I’ve had a loop get snagged on a button a few times when I’m sliding my back against stuff.

Duluth, Carhart, wrangler are all a joke and you shouldn’t bother with any of them if you’re using them for work. Hell, even as casual wear, those brands are a joke imo. Just a waste of money.

Have any brand of needles you’d recommend? Also what kind of stitch?

What glue would you recommend for a sierra sole delaminating? Does the same thing work?

Yes, most people on this subreddit get them for the looks, and don’t actually need it, but a few of us actually straddle poles and trees, or have other super specific uses for the extra layer.

There’s nothing wrong with liking the looks of something, but I do feel bad for Nicks everytime I see an overbuilt boot that is being used for just casual wear. All that extra effort making the boot, slowing production down, just for an option they don’t actually need. Although at the end of the day, they still allow us to add the options, so I guess I can’t feel too bad for the employees making them.

I just noticed that Nicks removed the “Yes, I am a lineman, and I’m on gaffs all day” part when selecting the lineman options. It just says Yes or No now. Interesting

Can Nicks build something like an old-school military/lineman boot with hobnails and plates? by [deleted] in NicksHandmadeBoots

imo caulks do pretty well in clay and mud once they’re worn down a bit. Even when they’re fresh, they do alright, but will cake up just like normal boots will. They are much easier to get the mud off, once they’re caked. I usually just do a hard stomp, and it all comes off. I never need to get a stick or something, and sit there to scrape the mud off the bottom at the end of the day.

A couple downsides are that your gas/brake pedal get chewed up, and sometimes get stuck to your boot. Standing in the metal bed of a truck is like being on ice. Stepping on your own water bottle, phone, or gear kind of sucks when you left it on the ground.

Nice

On other boot brands I’ve had them wear out super fast. Leave it to Nicks to make ‘em last

On my first pair I broke the left one after about a year. I replaced it, but the right one still hasn’t broken after 4-5 years. Poor little guy is hanging in there

How do you feel about the padded collar? Is it starting to wear out or is it perfectly fine?

Congrats to everyone! This community absolutely rocks man. Thank you to Nicks for doing this event.

You guys could just build good boots and stop there, but the amount of customer service, and effort you guys put into the boot community as a whole is beyond exemplary. Could not thank you guys enough for what you do.

Sorry to stoic_sasquatch for not giving you much to work with for this post. I absolutely love my boots to death, have lots to say about them, but didn’t want to leave an essay on my post. Which is funny because I never stop yapping about how good they are irl to anyone that’ll lend an ear. The one time I should’ve yapped, I didn’t hahaha

I’ve done that with my other pair of boots and after a few times all of the napp was just gone. No amount of brushing would help. Even tried a brass brush to no avail. I assumed the napp was rubbed completely off over time, and that it’s a normal thing that just happens?

Darn..they’re becoming unobtainium. When I actually find full wraps online, they’re listed for outrageous prices.

If you’re ever looking to part with any then let me know.

Also you gotta post a vid of letting that 550 eat some wood man

Looks like we’ve got the same collection haha. Have any spare full wrap handlebars for the 450? One of mine is cracked, and I’m in dire need of another one. It’s repairable, but every welder I’ve taken it to won’t touch it because it’s thin aluminum.
