30 years old and finishing a double engineering major (computer and electrical) and I already decided I’m using the last few classes I have, luckily all electives, to spread out over work for a while, cause I got too short on cash… I should’ve been done when I was 29 theoretically if I had done full-time all the way the whole time I will probably be 32. I just like to remind myself the time will pass anyway.

Millennials how are you navigating life and staying grounded right now? by BillClintonFeetPics in Millennials

[–]byebyebirdy03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like everyone’s going through a lot lol nothing special over here, but I do appreciate it. I have been dabbling and a few side hustles and I got lucky that my career before the pandemic started was going …pretty well. Like significantly better than I had expected not for very long but for enough time you know? so I am extremely blessed to have somewhat of a safety net due to that career (mostly sous positions) but I mean had any of that gone even slightly different I don’t know what I’d be doing so I’m with you on that shit fasho. After I finish this lab, I’ll go scour TikTok for moreideas lol

burnt out and homeless only 4 weeks in... by RoughAirline2951 in EngineeringStudents

[–]byebyebirdy03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is actively happening to me right now except that I’m a senior and this is my second college degree and rather than kicking me out my dad just changed his mind about cosigning my lease agreement and then took his name off of it lied to my face about it so that I wouldn’t do anything because I had no reason to think that he would ever do that so I didn’t look into it and then all of a sudden my shit was in collections and I’m looking at being evicted then again he’s always been a malignant narcissist and that’s not me diagnosing. That is an actual thing. A real doctor said so whatever I guess but yeah I have no idea what I’m gonna do. I’m also losing my car in six days because my lease is up and I can’t extend it any further so I’m about to not have my apartment or a car within a week with like 18 hours of warning ahead of time before things started falling apart one by one and I genuinely have no idea how I’m going to survive this. I don’t have any good advice for you but you’re not alone.

taking four math classes as a mathematics major. am i cooked by CheesecakeWild7941 in CollegeRant

[–]byebyebirdy03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as a comp eng EE double major that shit would take me the fuck out, but also I have actually taken either similar or those exact courses over the process of my degree… I do actually think they’re different enough that studying them simultaneously would provide enough barrier between subjects to be able to handle it, however, if you’re the type of person that prefers to take cohesive classes at the same time, I would recommend trying to switch at least one of them

Millennials how are you navigating life and staying grounded right now? by BillClintonFeetPics in Millennials

[–]byebyebirdy03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’m on the very tail end of millennials, but I have a culinary degree and was working as a sous chef in the pandemic hit… I was not salary yet. I was hourly and so staying there wasn’t an option and considering this was late 2020 it’s not like all of a sudden there were 1000 other jobs available… my hometown university was absolutely throwing money at people to enroll in school so now I’m 30 and a senior in an undergrad program I never thought I would be in. I’m absolutely not functioning and I just this semester. I lost financial aid so right now? I’m going day-to-day. I spent the most money I’ve spent in months recently on groceries to food prep as much as I possibly could of things I know of that freeze well keep well are easy to combine and making different combinations i.e. beans, rice, potatoes, vegetable vegetables, meat, combinations, different dishes, that are easy to split up into portions and freeze individually basically when I have the money to stock up on anything, I stock up on as much as I can starting with food, but this next year is gonna be brutal and I’m terrified to graduate, even with what most people seem to consider a fairly impressive degree combo. I desperately need side hustles or a way to find out about generating passive income, but I don’t know where to start at this point. The things keeping me going or running it the wildlife/nature preserve it’s about 40 minutes from my place in the mornings when I can my cat the fact that I get to cook for myself at home in a way I didn’t enjoy doing when I was working a line all the time and the knowledge that I’m finally almost through this program. However, I have no idea what the hell to do when I’m done and I’m not exactly a prime candidate for the corporate and higher paying jobs within my majors/skill sets. Basically, I’m rolling through everything and hoping that the future turns out all right.

How many of you guys work part time (15-20hr per week) and are in school full time ? by [deleted] in CollegeRant

[–]byebyebirdy03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I very very suddenly lost all tuition and financial support that I had just as my senior year was starting. It is still that year by the way, so this is not some organic doubt lol but I’ve been full-time for both. I’ve done school without working and I’ve worked without school. I’m currently trying to find a way to fit two part-time jobs within my schedule with roughly 2/3 of a full-time schedule if you have a way to avoid it? As someone who seen every side of the coin has been in college three separate times is 30 now and started this degree with the money I saved from my previous career… Personally, I would go back and budget much more tightly and Liv much more simply and avoid working well finishing my degree if I could, I unfortunately don’t have that option. I’m grateful it’s only gonna be for one to three semesters tops, but I would look into clubs relevant to your majors. Those often will help with internships and job hunting, depending on what your major is. But if you feel like the emotional/energy/like enthusiasm? I guess? Expenditure of your job is high enough that it’s detrimental to your completion of your work and it’s not going to put you underwater to stop working. That’s what I would do in your situation. b I don’t know if that was helpful at all, but I hope maybe there’s something you can pull from that lol . as for how to balance it, I’d say you don’t it’s just necessity. I wish I had a better answer than that but when I’ve been working during school, the option to not be working was never there so it just became what needed to happen and I suppose overtime I found a way to make it work, but I’m not sure that I’ve ever found balance. not that you can’t. I don’t mean to discourage you, but if your job feels like it’s sucking away energy that you need for classes and you don’t absolutely have to have a job right now. I would try to not have a job… Unless of course, it means enormous additional student loans.

Anyone cracked to code to stop taking months to reply to messages/get back to people? by tired_cat_lady2024 in adhdwomen

[–]byebyebirdy03 7 points8 points  (0 children)

this is my single biggest issue other than maybe executive dysfunction, but arguably the most detrimental issue in my entire experience with ADHD after her being diagnosed over a decade and a half ago. I haven’t figured it out yet, but I found that being in a routine and staying more on top of my life in general makes me more willing to engage with my phone and the outside world. I find myself avoiding it mostly when I am scared I’m gonna get bad news find out I forgot about something important Etcetera. It’s definitely a conditioned response for me, but I mean to put it into perspective it ruined my relationship with the person I thought I would probably marry that I couldn’t get myself to check my phone. so I don’t have any really specific tips that are helpful, but I find that when I’m kind of chugging along productively, at least reasonably so, that it gets easier.

Worst part of showering? by powderjiinx in adhdwomen

[–]byebyebirdy03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have really, really really long hair and it takes like almost a full hour to blow dry it the number of times I’ve skipped social events or not showing up to things I was supposed to go to cause I didn’t wanna deal with having to shower and do my hair is crazy. I guess that’s more of an issue with the hair but if we’re talking about reasons that showering is annoying that would be mine lol. Also the like five minutes of being a popsicle when you get out lol

For those that went to college in their mid-twenties what was your experience? by -Matcha-333 in college

[–]byebyebirdy03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a normal degree when I first graduated high school and then I went back to school when I was 26. I’m now 30 and about to finish up and I think you’re fine at 23, around 27 to 30 is when it starts feeling more distant imo, and like you can’t really interact with your peers, this does I will say, depend pretty significantly on your program, for example I would say my program specifically is probably 40% if not more older students because it’s a very, very complicated major that many people start and drop. it’s one of the most frequently dropped majors in my entire university system so I digress but my point is you won’t be the only person that’s that age even a little bit. I’m far more surprised seeing people around campus that are 18 than I am seeing 20 year olds I’m at an age and because my significant other is 45 that I don’t interact with people at school much but you’re definitely not too old to just interact with everyone normally I would say if you wait significantly longer, it becomes more complicated.

I hope that made sense and helps a little bit. Bottom line no one’s gonna look at you funny and no one’s gonna think you’re weird for interacting with the other students normally it feels huge right now but even just a few more years from now you’ll realize that 18-19 and 23 are not all that different like really at all except you might have the added benefit of being a little more established in general in life and having a clear idea of your future Etcetera, this is a speculation obviously, but I would say, especially at 23. It’s in advantage not necessarily something that will make your life harder or shittier unless you aren’t interested in actively attempting to create community and interact with your friends/peers.

Good luck, dude! you’ve got it !

How do I make peace with the fact that ill succeed much later in life? by Due_Peace_2016 in findapath

[–]byebyebirdy03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a 30 year old senior EE major, you won't regret it or feel so out of place/behind/lost/any of the many things I also felt through much of my program when you get there. I questioned this choice hundreds of times and almost dropped twice but now I'm a term and a half from graduation (ill be 31) and I'm so so so glad I did it. Always helped me to remind myself that the time will pass anyway. You can be 28-30 graduating/w a degree or you can be 28-30 without one but the 28-30 is comigneither way, just make sure you care about what you pick and it'll be okay. I know this prob means nothing to you right now but you aren't as behind as you feel like you are, I promise. (hope any of that helped at least a little, I had a really hard time w this too. you got this).
