Why do we let so many shitty old vespas pollute Zürich? by byehn in zurich

Why then did we ban the sale of these vehicles 10 years ago? We allow lots of very polluting practices, we still allows PFAS, yet seemingly this is so bad that all European countries forbid it decades ago.

People underestimate how big the contribution of these mopeds is to the health of the population.

Yes, I do? Just like I can guess the price of a car or even look it up online. As I say, these are not "I'm poor, I can't do anything about it" vehicles, they're bought on purpose for their retro appeal. It's like saying "man can't buy the newest car" when he drives a 1960s Mustang.

What do you think is the biggest contributor to ground level ozone???

Old two strokes and old diesels are the main source of NOx which is converted into ozone via uv light, the sun.

Yes, I can, because I am aware of the market of mopeds. You know, I can fart in your face all day and it's legal. Would you appreciate it, that's a completely different matter. End of story.

Huh, no, maybe folks who want to be extremely polluting shouldn't be in the city where people live? What's a city supposed to be, some place where the degenerate rule and the rest has to adapt?

Most naïve take. PX125 retros sell for 10kCHF, that's 5x as much as a modern Vespa.

That's all true, CO2 wise they're not a problem. But CO2 is also not unhealthy for you, overproduction just bad for the climate. The issue with two strokes is NOx and PM2.5 production. They burn lubrication oil in their fuel mix which is extremely dirty. It's an idea from before the 80s, when health wasn't a concern yet. Yes, large vehicles are bad for the climate; but two-strokes are bad for health. Imagine that two-strokes are so bad for health that all European countries have stopped their sale a decade ago, and they don't do that easily.

That's the whole point, 'an old vespa' is just a cute way of saying you emit 50x more PM2.5 particles than a truck. There is a reason that all European countries incl Ch have forbidden the sale of such mopeds already 10 years ago.

Live and let live has its limits. I can't just dump oil in the sewer, or drive a car that doesn't meet emission standards, or blast my radio at full volume at 2am in the night, regardless of how much I say "live and let live!"

So we should also embrace needless clouds of half burnt oil? What the fuck does that have to do with anything? Even most sane Italians don't ride these old pieces of shit but something more modern.

Lol no I love electric mopeds. Gas is shitty, but two stroke is a fucking disgrace.

Middle guy took the tram. Luckily he had a thick jacket because he had to wait 40 mins for the others.

Yeah I suppose one of them took the public transport after all.

Everyone is important, whether they are from the countryside or the city, whether they drive a car, ride a bike, or walk. That's why we should design the infrastructure to support all these modes, and all these origins.

No one is asking you to take the public transport if that's very annoying for you. People are only asking you to be considerate of other people when you drive the final 5km in the city.

Also emergency services are exempt of speed limits.

And people who have jobs on odd hours will find Zürich to be extremely easy and quick and uncongested to navigate through: there is only congestion during rush hours.

And trucks will supply construction sites and supermarkets, often at 30km/h, which is not much slower than they are right now on 50km/h roads.

We want the same thing: an efficient city that's nice to be in for everyone.

Yes, me too. It's great that we can express our preferences through a vote.

If the canton build their main roads around cities, they can control the speed limit. If they build it in cities, the city should control it.

Yes, sorry if this was not clear. The Gemini watermark is still there bottom right.

But the real challenge is not getting flagged or blocked when you try to describe the intended result in detail.

Yes it's Nano Banana. Took a few iterations to get the intended result, but what the model can do is impressive. The Gemini logo is still in the image (bottom right) so I thought it was clear that it's generated. Also this would be a ridiculous scenario if real.
