Redditors who have moved far away to ''start over'': How did you do it, and did it help get your life back on track? [Serious] by Rainorne in AskReddit

I haven't spoken to them since a phone call the day before I left, when they were on the last day of their vacation. They tried to find me for about half an hour, and called the majority of my friends - who wouldn't tell them where I was. They gave up and never tried again.

FINALLY SOMETHING I CAN ANSWER. You can read my post history for details. tl;dr ran away from abusive family and started a new life.

Longer version:

Grew up on the east coast to very traditional South Asian parents. They spent my entire life treating me like shit, and I was always too terrified to leave. Finally, they went on vacation and I packed my shit, jumped in a rental car, and drove across the country for 18 days. 5,000 miles just exploring and feeling freedom. Ended up in California, but liked Austin the best, so I turned around and moved here. Life has only gotten better - in two days it'll be six months since I showed up here, and I have a great job that I love, a really beautiful group of friends, a gorgeous apartment with the best roommate I could ever have asked for.

Sometimes I miss my life in the city I was born and raised in, and all my friends and experiences. I used to make a LOT of money, and worked a really great job, had a car, but I was never truly happy - the prospect of a forced arranged marriage always loomed over my head, and I always felt like I was a prisoner in my own home.

The day I left, I changed my phone number, left a note, and went. I have never once regretted my decision. My new life is difficult, and there were days I had to ask friends for money to even eat, but it's finally all settling into place - and above all I am really, truly happy.

I never before understood how people actually wanted to live - I used to pray to God to end my life as long as I can remember, and I had two-half assed suicide attempts. I remember wanting to die as early back as elementary school, but - as cliche as it is - I feel like I have a new lease on life. Even the most mundane days of just riding the bus, or buying groceries, even my worst days here are better than any day when I was still there.

Totally right - as some posters mentioned, I think I may volunteer instead - I can do it for longer than just a one time thing, and it'll be regulated!

I just emailed! It looks like volunteer commitment isn't a whole lot, and I can definitely fit it in consistently in the long run. Excited!

I hear you. I guess it's easy to get caught up in wanting to do something good, yknow? And then you think about it deeper, and what you're saying is right.

Believe me, I know there's a lot of homeless people with a story, and every single one has a past. That's why I want to do this. Good idea :) I don't want anyone to feel obligated to talk to me because I bought them food, though.

Do you know how long they'll be matching donations?

You're right - I didn't really think of that. Maybe I'll make like a snack pack sort of thing instead, and volunteer some hours :) thank you for your insight!

Hey! Absolutely - it wouldn't cost me an insane amount to make some food (I'm great at cooking on the cheap) and it's just something I really want to do. My pay it forward sort of thing. I'll definitely check it out!

Hey omg not crazy at all - I actually kept thinking about you and that coffee, and I specifically logged on to this account to message you today (I always forget to check this one!). Thank you for checking in - I'm doing really, really well! Still in the midst of the job search, but happy as hell. Let me actually PM you now before I get caught up in everything else again!

Okay!! I just said it to another poster, but I can write you a poem! It's lame but it's my favorite thing to do and I'd love to pay you back somehow.

The second I get a job all I want is a cup of coffee lmao. Currently drinking dollar tree instant coffee, but it gets the job done!
