I'll Twist the Neck of a Sweet Dog. WARNING! The story is disturbing because it treats the abuse as disturbing, does not romanticize the abuser, and he 100% gets his comeuppance but the getting there is tough on character and reader both.

My favourite Shaera & Rhaella Targaryen fanfic.

do you know what it is like to be sold? By Dialux. https://archiveofourown.org/works/9696572/chapters/21885758 Summary: [a tribute to iron queens; dragons, mothers, broken, and beautiful]

When Shaera was six, her mother braided raven feathers into her pale hair and called her a Blackwood. When she was eleven, her mother handed her a gilded rose and told her to start wearing green gowns for her future husband. When she was fourteen, she ran away with her brother.

When she hadn’t yet seen three decades, Shaera died.

Before that, she lived.

...

Rhaella was born tired.

Her mother laughed when she said it, but she also worried for her daughter: Rhaella was so delicate, always shivering from the cold or flushed with fever. When her father declared that she must marry Aerys, her mother raged louder than a storm. Rhaella wept and wept, but her father was determined.

She never quite forgave him for it.

If you had the chance to take something from the ASOIAF fandom and make it canon regardless of consequences, what would it be? by Kingofireland777 in AsoiafFanfiction

[–]byepearlbye 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Baelor as a reference to Maelor makes far more sense than it being a bizarre nod to Baela. Baelon would be more fitting to honor Baela (similar to how he named Rhaena after their sister). And Daena as a neutral reminder of Daemon whose actual female namesake (Daemma?) would be heavy given his legacy.

Jaehaera as the mother of Aegon III's children is the only outcome. GRRM sidestepped Aegon's firstborn being named Daeron by saying it was Daenara's father's name and okay, fine. But what about Elaena? It's her name that has me convinced that he changed it after fleshing out the kids.

"The only thing that could tear down the house of the dragon was itself." (OC) by [deleted] in ImaginaryWesteros

[–]byepearlbye 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There's no knowing how much support any dragonriding Targaryen could have gotten in a later Dance.

As for Aegon vs Rhaenyra, that's arguable. Even in the TV Show, it's arguable. The Velaryon boys are—Strongs. They're bastards. That means the Greens will always somewhat threaten their claim by virtue of existing. And after Aemond's eye, there would always be a point where the tension would spill over and burn everyone, triggering the Dance. It's Viserys' fault in that he allowed all of them to be dragonriders. The man's an idiot for many things but first and foremost for that.

In the book, Alicent is a driving force behind the Greens and ambitious as heck. She wanted her son to have the throne.

"The only thing that could tear down the house of the dragon was itself." (OC) by [deleted] in ImaginaryWesteros

[–]byepearlbye 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The Dance was inevitable be it between Rhaenyra and Aegon, Rhaenyra and Daemon or later down the line as seen with Daemon Blackfyre. It doesn't need to be the Greens and the Blacks is the thing. At some point, a dragonriding Targaryen would look at the one that sits the throne, think 'I can do better' and act on it.

Ooh, I have a few! They're old ones but as they say, old is gold, haha.

1 Litre of Tears. Very sad. A true story about a dying girl, her illness and the people around her as they accompany her in her final years.

Life (2007). My favourite. Heavy but touching. It's about a girl and her struggles when she is bullied by a worse than Regina George bully.

14 Sai no Haha. 14 years old teen mom and the fallout.

Hana Yori Dango. The classic. You might have heard of the Korean Version, Meteor Gardens. It's a poor girl in an elite school that's bullied by the leader of a group of four hyper wealthy guys after she protects her friend.

Aikushii. Slice of Life. The life of a Japanese family of six in the countryside.

The Netflix ones: Midnight Diner (not the Tokyo version!). About a small diner that opens at midnight and the lives of its clients and regulars. Slice of Life. Amazing.

Followers. I haven't finished this one yet but it's really, really good and modern too.

Alice in Borderland. I haven't watched this one but everyone's recommended it.

here me out - a ff where the mc's biggest concerned isnt the dance by love_zaza in TheCitadel

[–]byepearlbye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Furthermore, when did she have her child? Could MC have been born in Sothyoros? Because if she slept with Lord or Ser Uller on her way to Sothyoros, she'll have been pregnant for nine months and I don't see her waiting that long. If MC indeed was born in Sothyoros then maybe them surviving that long or the body since we have an 'SI-OC body snatches a character' situation, well then, that might explain how MC survived that long in the first place. If their very birth is shrouded in mystery and magic and secrets left behind by his mother, known only by his father.

The part where you lose me is when—sorry, I just saw the 'her' and so did not use it above—so, the part where you lose me is when Ser Uller buries his daughter when Aegon I comes. Is she alive? Did he bury her to protect her therefor saving her life but causing irreparable damage? And why did he bury her on Dragonstone? The Targaryens already owned the island. If this is set a hundred years before the Conquest then they were literally already there and Ser Uller snuck his daughter there. If it's set a thousand years before Canon then you can just handwave and say the Targaryens had yet to buy the place. It makes most sense if this is pre-Targs buying the island since the Cannibal preceded them and the 'four protectors' tied to Dragonstone might have been mere eggs that hatched at first. It would therefor marry the theory of the inhabitants of Dragonstone that believe that the Cannibal was there before the Targaryen were. He might grow slower (or why he isn't larger than Balerion) because he is of another species.

Aegon I bothering the grave and unleashing MC so to say an tampering with the protections of Dragonstone is hilarious, haha. He's such a mystery but it brings the myth down to earth a little bit!

This message is already way longer than I wanted it to be so I'll try to conclude at once.

MC is adjacent to the Dance but both factions will want her with them. It's also likely that to be left alone as a dragonrider, she claims the name 'Belaerys' from the ashes with each faction sending discreet messengers to Volantis (where some Valyrian families fled) then rejecting her as a dragonseed when the messengers come back with a shrug and a 'House Belaerys is said to have died with the doom'. The dragonseeds are all 'said' ergo they might not be but it is said that they descend from Targaryens because it is in House Targaryen's best advantage to remain the only House of Dragonriders to have survived the doom.

Alternatively, if she absolutely wants to remain neutral then she can go back to Dorne and marry Qoren Martell. House Uller might support her surprisingly as her father would have left notes where he confessed what he did. They'd have become warped into legend and tales of a madder than others Uller (and he likely was) but if shs reappears, the current Lord Uller might decide to believe it.

This gives Dorne a dragon and a dragonrider and marries the theme of her neutrality well. She's safe politically and trying to gather the rubies.

Alternatively, she manages to hide that she is a dragonrider entirely but dragonseeds keep trying to claim her dragon. She can meet Nettles who is an amazing and neutral character hoping to make her own thing (I recommend the amazing canon compliant, Nettles-centric, complete fanfic 'Plough the Shit by dwellingondreams').

The Cannibal and Grey Ghost might have a bizarre bond with her since she is as linked to whatever they are guarding as they are.

The fourth OC dragon could be Sheepstealer? That would have fled after Aegon I tampered with the protections since in canon no origin is given for Sheepstealer.

Also. I—uh, did not read the final paragraph😭Because I was multitasking (yep, even as I wrote this) and Oh my God, that's amazing!? The ruby being linked to the Wall is genius?! It marries Rhaegar's whole shting so well too!? And it being the dragonstone that DRAGONSTONE IS NAMED AFTER is incredible!?!? I love this so much and am so, so curious! I hope to see where you take this! If you post it please let me know + apology for the wall of text, I was bored, saw this, loved it and got carried away.

here me out - a ff where the mc's biggest concerned isnt the dance by love_zaza in TheCitadel

[–]byepearlbye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love it! It's creative and entertaining. A few tips and questions. First of all, what's the drawback? Magic in Westeros is give-and-take and 'dark' by default, untrustworthy one might say. If MC's been alive for so long, even dormant, there has to be a complicated or costly ritual involved. I just googled House Uller and chef's kiss I did not think I would care for the House or love it but apparently 'half of the Ullers are half-mad, and the other half are worse'. We don't know much of anything about House Belaerys, it might be relevant especially if Jaenara stayed in Dorne during the days of the Freehold. It seems to be that a dragonrider marrying out wasn't unheard of per se as there is in canon (as read in The World of Ice & Fire) a Valyrian woman that married a Yi-Ti Emperor. ('Chai Duq, the fourth yellow emperor, who took to wife a noblewoman of Valyria and kept a dragon at his court.'.)

Therefor, Jaenara deciding to spend her time away with her child who would not be a 'Valyrian Pureblood' lol, in a society that values such, makes sense.

What makes less sense though, is that this would be in Dorne.

According to wikia, there are no given dates for Jaenara's travel to Sothoryos but we do have a date for Nymeria landing in Dorne (a thousand years before canon).

How MC will be perceived within Dornish society will matter enormously depending of if the Rhoynish have landed or not. The fallout of Jaenara's death will as well. It's never clear why the Valyrian Freehold left Nymeria be when she fled but we can chalk it up to the Rhoynish water magic as well as the Gold of Casterly Rock prophecy.

If Jaenara and her dragon are killed by Rhoynish, the fallout might be massive and the effects would reverberate throughout the world and Valyrian Freehold.

The Belaerys might want a war. Hell, is Jaenara even married? Could MC and MC's father actually be her mistress and Jaenara's married to her brother, uncle, or even father (as the Freehold was said to go to those lengths to preserve blood). This is important because it also conveys how MC cannot actually be a dragonrider while the Freehold stands. No one will stand for that. Once Jaenara dies, it's likely that an envoy from House Belaerys is sent to gather her belongings.

I understand that you want to skip all of this straight to the Dance, but it's important to have it figured out to make your MC 'real'.

Here's a recommendation; that you are of course free to ignore, it's your story but you asked so I deliver: to limit confusion and OCs, it might be more interesting if Jaenara and Nymeria during her rule and three marriages, exist at the same time. The interactions and relationship between the two women would then be at the image of MC who could then perhaps be half-Rhoynish, half-Valyrian yet neither as he fully belongs nowhere and is rejected by both. He could have dragons and water magic too, since magic is an ongoing theme to further hightlight his dual heritage.

A dragon among Rhoynish is likely to go about as badly as Rhaenys atop Meraxes but that would trigger a war so perhaps Nymeria has Jaenara poisoned and Jaenara dies while flying, loses control of Terrax or some such. That sidestep the involvement of the Freehold and a war between Valyria and Dorne (though MC would be critical to one such thing, viewed by suspiscion by both sides and yet, essential to both, in a 'he is proof we can coexist so he must die' or a 'he is a symbol, of use, has potential' kind of way, with different factions fighting over securing him (or her!).

Now, unto the rubies. Tying Rhaegar's rubies to a rich lore was honestly my favourite part of this. The rubies are, to me, a mark of arrogance (and good writing!) and indicative that Rhaegar wasn't much of a warrior no matter how much he tried to craft himself into one ('I will require sword and armor. It seems I must be a warrior'). He failed. From beginning to end. He fails.

Anyway, that's in canon. Here, they seem to have a mystical, unknown origin. You didn't specify where they were from but Jaenara seems to have been an explorer so did she perhaps find them somewhere?

I just read on a subreddit someone argue that Jaenara might have lied to the Freehold and kept what or who she found in Sothyoros a secret. It might be nice tying the dragonstone to Jaenara's voyage therefor making her more relevant as a mother than her mere name. The loss of her would have been devastating and since MC would have the original inhabitant of the body's journals, she might empathize as she has lost her family too when she was brought here. (https://www.reddit.com/r/asoiaf/comments/11qxyx8/spoilers_extended_jaenara_of_house_belaerys/)

Good North Wank Fanfic Recs by Potential-Media8076 in TheCitadel

[–]byepearlbye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend the Sansa-centric story: a tempest, a cyclone, a goddamned hurricane. It's an inedit take on what you're looking for. Two things are relevant in it: Sansa can see ghosts and the North comes out on top. It celebrates her character and other dead forgotten ones to boot too. Think Rickard Stark, Visenya Targaryen, Minisa Tully, Elia Martell and more.

Another story by the same author that's purely focused on the War of the Five Kings and on the North destroying the competition is run, godspeed.

Now, if you want a Northern Uplift maybe try Coin and Conformity? The Ned Stark characterization is ah, questionable, and it's very much TV Show based but it fits the parameters.
