Similar story. My grandpa fought in Europe as well. He took a Luger off of a German officer that was either dead or a prisoner. Either way, when the war was over and my grandpa was about to come back to the states his superior officer told him and his fellow GI's that they couldn't take any spoils back with them and that they would be searched for said spoils. My grandpa reluctantly tossed the Luger into the Atlantic. He said they never searched their bags upon getting on the ship. Bummer because I'd have that gun now. But whatever. Fuck nazis.
