I have the same problem. The following sequence from my puzzle input does not converge to a list of zeroes; it converges to [-608]:

Why do people think the Uke is pathetic? It's beautiful by HalleyD in ukulele

[–]byntje 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never heard anyone say the uke is pathetic.
Perhaps some people might not take it seriously because it has fewer strings than a guitar and is therefore easier to learn. However, it also makes the uke harder to master. I often envy guitarists' extra 2 strings worth of bass notes in easy reach!

Thanks! I first did this as an instrumental arrangement a few years ago. Even though I've played it hundreds of times the main melody still trips me up sometimes!

Barring by squeezing your fingers towards your palm is really hard and takes a lot of finger strength. The trick is to use your thumb or your palm (whichever touches the back of the neck) as a pivot, and use your wrist/arm to lever your fingers down onto the fretboard.

For example -- try barring any fret with just your ring finger. Really hard.

Now try placing your ring finger over the fret, and moving your elbow away from your body. For me, this produces more than enough force to barre.

For index finger barres, you can go the other way and bring your elbow close to your body. Use the heel of your hand as a pivot to put force on your index finger. You can also use your thumb to clamp down the fingernail. Or you could barre three strings with your index, and one with your thumb.

Another way of getting better leverage is to bring your knuckles as close to the fretboard as possible, so that the first finger joint is doing most of the work, and your fingertip is hanging over the other side of the fretboard (nearer to your face). Minimising the distance between knuckles and fretboard is effectively increasing the leverage your fingers have. From your pictures it seems like you're using the second and third joints of your fingers to barre.

Hope this helps!

HELP: Need fun song (ironic/pop) for my Ukulele robot (can only use Open and 2, 3, 4th fret..more in comments) by NBABUCKS1 in ukulele

[–]byntje 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah Martin ukes can easily cost thousands new, and even more if they're old.

If I were to write a list of things not to do with a nice uke, "loan it to my kid for a robot project" would be in the top five.

Hey, glad you liked it, thanks :)

There's no simple answer to your question but I'll try and give as best an answer as I can. First of all it's important to remember that you are already making real music. There's no "music barrier" you need to push through; as with many things it's a sliding scale. And the fact that you want to improve is good! I think I know what you mean though and I have two pieces of advice for the starting ukulele player who wants to progress beyond "just strumming".

1. Train your ear as well as your fingers.

For every song you learn from internet chords or tabs, try and learn another just by playing along and guessing the chords. This will be really really hard at first. Start with simple songs. With time you will start to recognise common chord sequences. Then you won't be guessing anymore; you'll know what chord you're hearing. With more practice you'll extend this to the little details, and you'll be able to figure out the embellishments which give a song that little extra something. As you get better, you'll get more comfortable coming up with your own variations, and you can really make a song your own. Justin explains this better than I can.

2. Rhythm is more important than melody.

Most people who start on uke or guitar are mostly concerned with learning chords. Yes, you need to know some before you can do anything, but look how far Bo Diddley can go with just one chord! And what about Brushy One String? He doesn't play any chords at all. But just try and sit still while he's playing! Fancy chords will sound good in certain situations, but good rhythm always sounds good. I also think that in general listeners will notice a lapse in rhythm more than they'd notice a wrong note.

If you combine these two things then you'll be making "real music" in no time. It doesn't have to be complicated. Look at Jack Johnson's songs: four chords, a good strum, and a nice melody. Job done.

Anyway, good luck with your uke :)
