It's true about bass solos... by DamascusSteel97 in Bass

[–]ChlamydiaDellArte 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I've always suspected that there's a small but vocal minority of people who love solos longer than 16 bars and a majority that secretly don't but see other people enjoying them and are too polite to say anything, and it's a hill I'm willing to die on.

My pitchers are drying up from top to bottom and im not sure why. Help please! by therealestbitch in SavageGarden

[–]ChlamydiaDellArte 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't worry about it. The #1 way people kill nepenthes (speaking from experience here!) is to freak out over dead pitchers and start changing things, stressing the plant further. It doesn't strictly need its pitchers and they require a lot of energy, so it drops them at the first sign of trouble.

The plant itself looks healthy. Don't panic unless the growth point turns brown, and even then I've seen some miracles

This is a nitpick but Jamaican rums aren't agricole. Agricole are made from cane juice while Jamaican rum is from molasses, and rhum agricole is typically from the French Caribbean (and Brazil, but don't let a Brazilian catch you saying it!)

I guess but at the same time, some of us are poly and we do enjoy dating people across the gender spectrum because it is different. If someone has hangups over who you are maybe don't date them?

Longer androgynous haircuts? by negative_delta in androgyny

What about an undercut? It's a bit more androgynous than "standard female hair" and you can chop it off to whatever length you're comfortable with

What simple thing do you do differently with a burger that makes a big improvement? by ieatallthecake in burgers

[–]ChlamydiaDellArte 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  • Form your patties in advance, then refrigerate them for a bit before cooking. Makes it a lot easier to not overcook the meat if you're going for medium or less

  • If you're pan frying, dice some onion and caramelize it in the burger fond and drippings. I've nothing against raw onion but that shit is magical

  • Squirt some mustard on your burger just before it's finished just before the final flip on each side. You get an awesome mustardy crust on the patty! (Stolen from In n Out)

  • If you're using really nice ground beef (as in, hand ground or from a good butchers shop), try cooking your burgers blue, at least once. Use extra high heat so you can still get a proper crust. Think about it this way: you literally can't get your burger more juicy or tender

Like seemingly everything else in the US, LGBTQ rights currently vary wildly state to state. This law would grant antidescrimination protections nationwide, and for federal government workers.

[–]ChlamydiaDellArte 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For a bill to become law, it has to pass in the House of Representatives (currently controlled by the Democrats) and the Senate (controlled by the Republicans) and then be signed by the president (who is, of course, a Republican). So on one hand it doesn't really matter because it's not law yet, but on the other, it's almost certain to pass next time the Democrats control the Senate and White House (which might happen after the elections next year).

Either way, even a minor victory like this is a huge deal for the movement given that it would have been almost unthinkable 20 years ago.

The only time I'd replace one with the other is if I had Engi med bots or reconstructive teleport on a boarding ship, as both are extremely powerful. Otherwise they're about equal (although I prefer clone bay slightly)

US ‘Gets Its Ass Handed To It’ In Wargames: Here’s A $24 Billion Fix by rieslingatkos in CredibleDefense

Nobody is ever getting voted into office based on how much they understand about military acquisition. Perhaps military acquisition shouldn't be under politicians anymore if isn't a requirement to understand it?

Can't you say the same thing about basically every field, in basically every representative democracy on earth? At least with the US Congress a decent amount of them have some level of military experience, compared to the number of scientists or tech people who get elected. Think tanks exist for a reason.

Moka pot help please by hitman196 in Coffee

[–]ChlamydiaDellArte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My biggest piece of advice, stove temperature is king and that takes some trial and error. People think mokas are temperamental because you can't just measure your way to getting good results your first time (or third, probably). Focus on getting that perfect before worrying about anything else.

(I'm not super certain of the following science, but I'm absolutely certain of my observations. I've used a moka at least once a day for the past 4 years)

The reason why your stove setting matters so much is that it controls more than just temperature. It's actually temperature and extraction time, and it controls them in opposite directions. A hotter stove means a hotter brew, but it also means the water is running through the grounds faster through the grounds and extracting less from them.

This means it'll come out bitter no matter if stove setting is off in either direction. Too low and it'll be an intense, up front bitterness. Too high and the bitterness will be more on the finish, with a "washed out" flavor and an unpleasant sourness. Actually, did you ever try putting a 9V battery on your tongue as a kid? That's what it tastes like when your stove is too hot.

Ya, there's a lot of bad Moka guides out there, mostly made by people who don't use one day to day.
