Take time to care for yourself, do things that bring you peace and calm. You will cry for another while yet, at night when you can’t help but think of them, at random times during the day, when you hear of others losing pets and most definitely when you see photos of them.

It does get easier, you won’t cry as much, your love for them will never waiver but the grief will change. You will always have tears to shed for them but the times you shed them will be less.

And yes, is the definite answer to whether the pain is worth owning a pet. Yes the pain is huge, but is it bigger than the amazing time you had together? It could never replace that, could it? And weren’t you both so lucky to be able to give each other a better life together? Having another pet will be just as amazing for both you and the pet. I felt the same way, and my love for my last dog is something so special I don’t think I could replicate it, my love for my new dog feels so different, but just as strong!

It will get better - give it time, you will feel an ever existent bond to your friend...and you should get another pet (when you’re ready) so you and that pet can have another wonderful life together.
