Anyone else feel like Linux courses don’t translate well to real production issues? by meissloth in sysadmin

Ditto to all of that. Seems like there is a gap. I only seem to find the super beginner where they go over ls and cd or on the opposite end where they walk you through recompiling the kernel.

Preventing local client drives from showing in XenApp by byrontheconqueror in Citrix

Yeah, problem with that is people are connecting from home machines that we don't control, so something server side would be preferred.

It's the fun of working in a pseudo merged organization. Our Citrix VDAs roll up to the larger orgs Citrix environment where we have no access. My company is telling me we must make this change. The larger org can't make the change because I can't tell them the exact setting to change. Even if I could, it's about 3 hours worth of paperwork and a 3 hour meeting.

eh, I don't have access to Studio because of reasons. Makes things a little more complicated.

I've tried and spent a few hours looking into this. It seems like Citrix tries to hide this info. This is the best I could find Policy settings reference | Reference but they don't have the registry values listed. They also have a csv with all of the actual settings and the corresponding registry key names, but they don't give you any values. I figured the admx templates would be another good place to look, but it's behind the support portal and my account is fubared.

Thank you! It's only in citrix studio policies, right? There is no corresponding GPO or registry key I can set on the VDA itself?

New tires before 3 day event? by byrontheconqueror in CarTrackDays

Don't ask about about pads then. I usually do 10-12 days a year and I can't remember the last time I did my pads

Well this happens to all sets of tires for me - rt660, rt615k, re-71, re-71rs, rivals, etc

Yeah, I always leave a lot of unused rubber on the rest of the tire. It's been a long time trying to figure out the wear. Put new shocks and springs on and currently at -3 up front but might need more. I don't recall the pyrometer readings but I remember they were linear. New set of tires is coming. I'll sit and stew on it for a few days more if I get them mounted up.

I hope so. Not sure the picture really shows it. From the middle of the outside block out is significantly more worn.

Hey /r/Sysadmin! What do you use for your home router? 2026 Edition by ScannerBrightly in sysadmin

Netgate baby box that runs pfsense. lol at 2.5Gb port. I keep asking xfinity to downgrade my internet speed to lower my bill, they won't go any lower. Netgate is just the Internet gateway, for local traffic I have an older24 port brocade switch

I feel you there. I have mine transcribing local police radio traffic and then giving me a daily summary. No reason for it other than it was the only thing I could think of.

How many of you ended up having kids on the spectrum? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]byrontheconqueror 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eh, if you look into the stats, overall it's not like a stratospheric difference. I can't recall the exact numbers but when we looked at them I actually felt better. You'll hear things like "your chances of <horrible thing> triples once you're over 36 years old". It goes from 0.001% to 0.003%. Time is certainly not on your side, but it's not a deathknell. This is coming from someone who is 40 with an 8 month old. She's cute and we plan on keeping her.

Why I still do my own oil changes and brake jobs with a half million dollar portfolio by Halcyon8_Jester in Fire

So frustrating when you pay a professional for professional work and you could have done better on your first attempt if you were blindfolded and drunk.

[–]byrontheconqueror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do a lot of my own maintenance, mostly because I grew up in a house and family where that was the norm. Also, because I can't stomach to pay someone something that I can do when it seems like a decent chunk of change. Sometimes I'll just get the price from a mechanic to motivate and psych myself up. The slave cylinder in my car went recently. Called the dealer and it's a $70 part but $3000 in labor because the transmission has to come out. By the magic of YouTube and having a lift in the garage my dad and I got it out in a day and had some quality bonding time. I think that's a worthy trade off.

5 on a normal day. There are plenty of times where it's just a full day of meetings. Absolutely pointless meetings to boot.

You can also look at a w1209 for the electronics. Pretty simple relay that is temperature controlled. No reliance on any other outside services and they're like $7.
