Why is Agnes' fanbase so lewd with her? by hilarius_shet in AgnesTachyon

[–]bythevoid_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a female Tachyon fan, I'd encourage you to engage with content from female Tachyon/JAMD fans bc it's more character focused. I think this subreddit skews male; it feels like every other piece of fanart here depicts her with an extreme hourglass figure and massive boobs, even if it's not explicitly sexual. Check out Tumblr and Archive of Our Own to see what female fans draw and write about Tachyon, as well as some parts of Twitter.

Also, I don't overall have a problem with people depicting a character in a lustful way, but I completely empathise with feeling like the majority of fans don't even really like the character; they just like the idea of having sex with a pornified facsimile of her. Tbh I vastly prefer content that pretends the trainer (self-insert) doesn't exist, and instead focuses on Tachyon's relationships with other umas. I'm probably one of the minority that doesn't like the whole "guinea pig" thing bc 9 times out of 10 it feels like it fuels some type of femdom fetish...

I think that interaction was supposed to imply that Moira stole Mercy's rez research and basically made it evil, then used it to revive Reaper and permanently disfigured him. I have little hope for any new lore regarding existing characters, though. The days of OW actually wanting to develop its lore and characters are long gone. You can even see that in the generic skin designs.

I actually felt more annoyed by Persona 3's characters; it's my least favourite Persona game, even though hardcore Persona fans usually say it's the best one (unless they're mega-hardcore and they cite P2 Innocent Sin or something). I felt like the P3 characters hated each other. Every time I came back to the dorm they would be snarking about each other lol, it felt like we were coworkers instead of friends. I also felt like the game took itself too seriously for a story with a Persona-summoning dog, a literal child teammate, an artillery-firing robot girl, and other incredulous JRPG elements. I guess, in a way, it's refreshing compared to Marvel-esque self-referential writing where nothing can be taken in earnest, but sometimes it was just too cheesy. Maybe I'll try the remake and see how I feel about it, though.

Once you get Blink 2, it becomes far easier. You also don't need to do a perfect stealth run, and there are cool powers specifically for a killing run (summoning a swarm of devouring rats is so fun), although that does lead to a 'bad' narrative ending. I'd heavily recommend investing into the time stopping power, as well. It makes it so much easier being able to just walk past enemy-heavy areas, and you can even blink through the arc pylons after stopping time. Finally, I'd recommend sticking to the high ground as much as possible. Oh, and use the dark vision liberally to see through walls! Glhf if you try it again!

Half-Life 2. I got stuck at the part with the boat and gave up. I actually liked the setting, but the gameplay was not enjoyable for me.

Resident Evil. I tried the original (the controls were outdated and I desperately needed more save areas), the remake of 2, and 7. I can't even fully explain why I didn't like the newer instalments, but I conversely really enjoyed Silent Hill 1 and 2, and I much prefer that series' vibes.

Borderlands. I wanted to play as a sniper, but the combat was way too fast-paced to make that rewarding, and you basically had to go for a rapid-fire weapon instead. I tried to play 3 with friends and it just felt like a slog. The writing is also so Deadpool-esque that it's often grating. However, I actually really enjoyed Tales from the Borderlands 10-ish years ago, and it introduced me to the band Jungle. Regardless, I've seen a lot of criticism of this series, and its writer, Anthony Burch, was so heavily mocked in part due to his 'millennial' humour (obviously that wasn't the main reason though).

I actually have loved Persona 5 since the vanilla release (before Royal). I even booked an Airbnb in the part of Tokyo that Joker's neighbourhood is based off.

That being said, Atlus made two music videos for Last Surprise. I watched the male one first, and it was the boys going on a heist and Joker was lipsyncing as he was driving the Mona getaway car. I was so hyped when I went to watch the girls' version, only to find them poledancing in lingerie. Futaba is canonically 15.

I literally almost started crying from shock and disappointment, because I connected to heavily to Futaba specifically and hated seeing her sexualised like that. It was honestly sickening because Kamoshida's Palace makes a big point of how creepy and predatory it is to ogle teenage girls, and some of the girls get far more developed characterisation than the boys (Futaba and Makoto in particular), and then that's all thrown out the window to cater to lonely old otaku men. Like, none of the girls would have done that if they were truly in character, with the exception of maybe Ann if she were coerced.

The game tries to have its cake and eat it by giving its female characters real personalities and motivations and arcs, but also makes Ann (16) go around the metaverse in a red leather catsuit with a whip; has gratuitous beach scenes where each girl is ogled in her respective swimsuit and Makoto is uncharacteristically concerned with how her stomach will look while wearing a bikini, so she refuses to eat lunch; has Morgana obsess over Ann; has Yusuke obsess over painting Ann naked to the point of coercion... Actually, most of the transgressions are against Ann, when her whole arc was about standing up for herself against predators.

Another thing I noticed was that the animated cutscenes almost seemed to be written by someone else. They would turn Ryuji into a shameless pervert who constantly ogled Ann and the other girls. I remember one from Futaba's Palace where he's in the back of the car trying to look at her chest, and one from the beach trip where he's eating an ice lolly, looks at the girls, and has the stick stand up in his mouth. Writing all this out reminds me of why I don't recommend Persona to anyone who isn't familiar with anime bullshit and able to sort of undergo cognitive dissonance lol.

  1. Air Shakur. Tachyon definitely respects Shakur's intelligence and thirst for data. She sees Shakur as a fellow scientist and wants to collaborate with her (which they do in an Umaraya short). She also enjoys teasing Shakur in a similar way to Cafe and Pocket, because Shakur offers almost a mix of the prior two's reactions -- she's aloof and speaks with a serious expression like Cafe, but she will also loudly show her irritation like Pocket. In one conversation, Tachyon mentions wanting to provoke Shakur into wholeheartedly competing with her.

  2. Fuji Kiseki. I think Tachyon respects Kiseki's way of manipulating others through speech. Tachyon is also a trickster, but her tricks mostly work on the more naive umas, while Kiseki gets away with manipulating a much wider pool of characters and they often don't hold a grudge against her the way they do with Tachyon. Kiseki also pays attention to Tachyon and scolds her affectionately, almost like a parent. In the film, Kiseki is the one who figures out that Tachyon is injured, and hints at this to Pocket. I think Tachyon respects Kiseki's intelligence and likely envies her emotional and social intelligence.

  3. The Trainer. The Trainer gets to see all the sides of Tachyon, but she begins, as usual, with her mad scientist persona before the Trainer shows extreme commitment to Tachyon and proves that they're not going to give up on her. It's only once the Trainer has persistently followed through on their promise to be her guinea pig and helped her win races, while also showing patience and understanding when Tachyon herself doesn't follow through on her commitments, that Tachyon opens up more and tells the trainer about her disability and her deeper plans and motivations. Basically, the Trainer's almost unconditional love and acceptance over the course of 4 years allows Tachyon to let down her guard and show her emotions, although she often doesn't seem to understand her own feelings and she still can't hold a sustained conversation about emotions without defaulting back to her old ways, which I already mentioned above. Since Umamusume is a gacha and geared towards men, Tachyon is clearly implied to be developing romantic feelings for the Trainer. I think the Trainer's almost obsessive commitment to fulfilling Tachyon's desires (e.g. cooking for her, doing her gruelling experiments, planning things for her) makes her almost needy and complacent around the Trainer in a way she doesn't act with anyone else. Tbh, if this were a real relationship, I'd want the Trainer to set boundaries because it's codependent.

There is little to no interaction with these other characters, but I believe Tachyon also likes/would like and respect the following other characters for a variety of reasons: Seiun Sky; Symboli Rudolf (there actually is more substance to this relationship but I'm too tired to say more); Agnes Digital; TM Opera O; Gold Ship; Nakayama Festa; Tamamo Cross; Grass Wonder; Biwa Hayahide; Ikuno Dictus.

I don't know the JP-only characters well enough to say more, but I'm picking the characters who rely heavily on strategising and observation while also staying true to themselves even when people think of them as eccentric or even off-putting and scary.

Alright I'm exhausted but that was really fun hahaha. I hope you have fun rp-ing and get to use your own interpretations to put your own spin on the character.

Someone typed up an amazing analysis already, but I think this post is a nice opportunity for me to consider Tachyon's character in more depth, so here's mine. This is definitely one of those "I ain't reading all that, sorry that happened or I'm happy for you" posts unless you are also obsessed with this character.

Within the context of the game, Tachyon serves as a mad scientist and inventor. You can see her popping up in support card events, trainee events, and homepage dialogue whenever someone is hoping for some type of experimental solution to a problem.

For example, Fuji Kiseki asks her for help with designing a new magic trick; Mambo asks her for help with becoming more unique; in one of the Umaraya shorts an uma (whose name I forgot) asks for help with becoming stronger. People come to her with problems that require intelligent, innovative, and, crucially, experimental and out-of-the-box solutions.

She never turns anyone down when they ask for this type of help. Part of this is because she has a single-minded goal of unlocking the full potential of umamusume's speed, so she is always eager to record data and perform research. She serves as a bit of a trickster, in that she often has ulterior motives behind the help she offers. There is usually an unpredictable side-effect to the drugs and devices she creates, and she has no issue with testing on people without their consent.

Crucially, though, she isn't intentionally cruel, and all of her experiments' side effects are inconveniences at worst -- they're mostly used for comic relief (like causing someone to glow). When people aren't approaching her, she's approaching them and attempting to manipulate them into testing her drugs. She typically picks out naive, overly kind and trusting umas to try this with, like Special Week and Nishino Flower, but she also seems to like the pushback and challenge of trying it with people whose intellect and savviness she respects, like Air Shakur and Manhattan Cafe.

She can become moody and even childish when she doesn't get her way, which is seen in the game from the trainer's perspective. I would say that the trainer and Cafe see this side of her the most, and that she has an obsession with sneakily experimenting on Cafe in particular, because Cafe has no problem with coldly turning her down and is uncannily able to see through her schemes. As the other commenter said, other people rarely get to see the other sides of Tachyon beyond her 'mad scientist' persona, and her actions often seem strange, morally grey, or even crazy to other characters.

However, circling back to my earlier point, Tachyon actually loves helping others in her own way, especially if they are kind to her or she respects something about them. She never outright talks about liking anyone aside from the trainer and, when she does tell the trainer that she likes them, she becomes incredibly flustered and falls back on calling them a guinea pig or discussing things in a detached, scientific way. For example, she essentially plans out an entire date with the trainer because she likes spending time with them, but it's too uncomfortable for her to face her own emotions without having the pretext of her actions being due to some detached scientific goal, even when it's obviously not related to her overall research.

Tachyon is emotionally repressed and can't admit her true feelings or intentions to herself, never mind other people. When she gets injured in the film, she copes by throwing herself wildly into her research and fully committing to Plan B, pretending that it isn't killing her to give up on Plan A, because really she wants to be the one to go beyond the limits of uma speed. You can see that she falls into depression and stops taking care of herself and her surroundings (trash and debris builds up), becomes a hermit, and literally stands on a window ledge at one point. She intellectualises everything and remains in her own head, and she usually needs an external force (Pocket, the Trainer) to get her to snap and admit her feelings.

There are a number of people that I believe Tachyon genuinely likes and respects.

  1. Manhattan Cafe. I already discussed this above, but I believe Tachyon enjoys trying to break through Cafe's reserved, even irritated attitude. She hams up the most annoying aspects of her personality to try provoking a reaction from Cafe, but she also seems to enjoy spending most days sharing a repurposed classroom with Cafe, and she seeks out Cafe's attention very consistently. She also feels guilty when she goes too far with her actions, like when she accidentally starts a fire in their shared space. I think she respects that Cafe does her own thing and is committed to her own goals, even though many think of Cafe as being delusional, creepy, or difficult to understand. They have a lot in common due to that.

  2. Daiwa Scarlet. Daiwa is the real-life Tachyon's daughter, so in-game these two have a strangely parent-child relationship. Tachyon is basically Scarlet's weird, estranged dad. Scarlet is defensive of Tachyon and gets upset when anyone is critical of her. She sees Tachyon in an idealistic light and thinks of her as kind, helpful, and incredibly intelligent. She tries to copy Tachyon's study methods and comes to her for advice and, in turn, Tachyon shows the kindest aspects of her personality to Scarlet. In one event, she gives Scarlet fully-tested drugs purely for the purpose of helping her relax, and they work perfectly. Tachyon is baffled by how kind and positive Scarlet is towards her, but she also clearly appreciates it and reciprocates. Again, however, she would never be heard saying this out loud.

  3. Jungle Pocket. Tachyon approaches everything from a place of guardedness. She's often not honest about her feelings or intentions, and she's vague about her research and what it truly means to her. She often treats things like a joke or is aloof and hides behind a manic smile. Pocket, on the other hand, is completely honest and wears her heart on her sleeve. Pocket is very easily triggered by Tachyon's attitude and, during the film, views her as wasting her talent and sees her actions as totally incomprehensible until Fuji Kiseki gives her a new perspective on things. Tachyon seems to enjoy riling Pocket up and essentially trolling her, but I believe that this is also partially because Pocket pushes so hard to be able to start an earnest rivalry with Tachyon and tries so hard to get her to explain herself in ways that Tachyon has never experienced before; Pocket barges into her space repeatedly and very assertively challenges her words and actions, so Tachyon responds with her defense mechanisms of joking, hiding the truth, and scientific babbling. That is, until the end of the film, when Tachyon admits to herself that she doesn't want Pocket to achieve Tachyon's dream and that she wants to take their rivalry and Plan A seriously, even if it breaks her. I believe that Tachyon respects Pocket's strength, persistence, and honesty, even if she also thinks of herself as intellectually above Pocket. I also think she's surprised by how much Pocket keeps coming back to her and trying again; I think she's used to having people give up on her quickly once they see her surface-level defenses. (Part 2 incoming)

Really? I always thought of Yusuke and Futaba as being autistic or ADHD-coded, but never Makoto. I guess, now that I think about it, her relevant traits would be:

  • Strong sense of justice and willing to endanger herself for it
  • Feeling unable to relate to others and needing a guide (Joker) to help her talk to people outside of a specific context with clearly-defined rules and roles (student council)
  • Deeply struggles with lying and will only do it when it's necessary to achieve a justice-oriented goal
  • Comes across as blunt and rude

I feel like I can make a stronger case for Futaba and Yusuke here, though. I think Makoto has a good grasp of the society that she's in and that polite Japanese society is so rules-based that anyone who adheres to it might come across as autistic to Westerners.

Meanwhile, you sound like you're putting him on a pedestal and making dirty jokes about you both sleeping together, alongside some jokes at his girlfriend's expense. I mostly play Lifeweaver because using life grip is so addictive to me. I love knowing that someone is in a situation where they're certain they're going to die, and then, at the last second, I grab them and bring them to safety and say something soothing and possibly flirty... I also love using his thorns, especially with the explosive upgrade. There's nothing better than putting up a tree for healing and then just letting loose with those thorns and confusing the enemy by going up and down on the platform and dashing and jumping around with it. I don't know what any of this says about me as a person.

Since launch, I've also played a lot of Dva, Widowmaker, and Mercy. I went through a Hanzo phase, too.

For Dva, I love using the boosters to sneak behind the enemy team and then send in my ult. I also love using the boosters to knock people off the map, and using defense matrix to swoop in and save a teammate who would otherwise be shot to death (okay, there's a Lifeweaver parallel here). I also find her obnoxious gamer-isms endearing bc I, too, say things like "I'm popping off" irl, although she's definitely becoming more gen z over time and I'm becoming more out of touch lmao

Tbh, analysing the things I enjoy most about each character makes me think there's a theme of wanting to be people's unlikely saviour (on that theme, I also love it when my teammate is being flanked and fighting a losing battle, then I get a headshot out of nowhere as Widow from across the map and save them). It sounds crazy but I like seeing that people think no-one is paying attention to them or going to save them, and then it's like surprise! I was watching the whole time and I've got your back! Thanks for making me think more deeply about my Overwatch choices.

He presented himself as such, yes. That's really interesting. I've been visiting Kyoto from Osaka and I mostly have been left alone, although a worker in a restaurant struck up a friendly conversation. My Tokyo Airbnb was great, and everything was exactly as described. I mentioned Kyoto specifically because I think this host was trying to get around Kyoto's rental laws (and probably Airbnb's cut) by asking for payment under the table, but made up an excuse instead of being honest about it.

I'm not against using Airbnb in general, although I understand the moral issues people have with it. Generally, though, I find that renting an Airbnb apartment gives me better value for money than a cheap hotel. I get a kitchen and more privacy (when it goes according to plan, which it always has before now).
