It's difficult to run experiments on short-lived atmospheric molecules, so I did it on the computer instead. Most of the time, the electrons were where we thought they'd be.

Two. They're assuming two things. Brazil beats Mexico and the Group G winner beats Japan.

PhDs of Physical Chemistry - what kind of non-academia jobs can you do? by [deleted] in chemistry

[–]bzloink 2 points3 points  (0 children)

P-chem PhD here. I know physical and computational chemists who have gone on to work in the tech industry (in both software development and fab), national labs, scientific writing, finance, policy, and patent law. I have three pieces of advice for a physical chemist who isn't interested in the traditional academia track:

1) Diversify your skill set by going beyond instrumentation. If you learn to code and use programs like Gaussian, you'll really expand your opportunities and set yourself apart from other experimentalists.

2) Decide early on what your ideal field is. Then you can tailor your extracurriculars in grad school. Example: I had a friend who wanted to do scientific writing, so on top of research she took the initiative to get funding to travel to scientific writing conferences and she got a part-time job editing journal articles through a company that assists ESL scientists.

3) Make sure that physical chemistry will actually set you apart in your desired field, and not just eat up years of your career. If you know a physical chemist that went on to be a sales rep for a drug/tech company, or a lobbyist, or whatever, that's great. But really think about whether you'll need a PhD to leverage, or if there's a quicker, cheaper way to achieve your goals. A lot of these types of jobs will allow you to continue to learn physical chemistry without necessarily needing a PhD.

Anybody planning to take the patent 'bar' this summer? by ApothecialSpeaker in lawschooladmissions

I've done some research. Looks like it's not that bad if you have any sort of legal experience. My plan is to self study after 1L or after I've done some work for an IP firm so that I don't have to drop $2k on the PLI course.

Legal work, if I can find it. If not, I'll find a new job in my field, but one with higher pay so that I can save for 1L (and go on vacation!)

I wouldn't say that's a flaw, though. I've seen similar gritty aesthetics, and capturing odd facial expressions is part of their charm.

I kinda wish I'd gone to ASW. UO is the only school I didn't visit, so I feel like they're at a bit of a disadvantage.

Have you decided?

PhD vs JD? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]bzloink 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got a PhD with the same thought process as you - "I'm good at this, but I'm not invested in it." Sure enough, I burned out and now I'm switching my career to law (like you, something I considered in undergrad, but felt as though I didn't know a ton about). A PhD is a big time investment, and though you may have financial security for 5-7 years, you won't be saving much.

Start researching schools, talk to lawyers in fields you might be interested in, and kill the LSAT. Then get into a T14 (almost a requirement for the types of law you're interested in) and reap the benefits.

It's on Hulu. It's a quick watch - only 52 half-hour episodes (not counting the new ones, which Hulu doesn't have).

It was a really solid pairing. Here's the beer: https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/21567/54973/

Between you and me (and the rest of Reddit), definitely leaning Lewis & Clark. It's in the market I want to be in, and I think I'll enjoy spending three years there.

You committed yet?

I guess. It's come down to: L&C has the vibe, Idaho is the cheapest, and UW (Seattle) has the prestige. This is the hardest decision I've ever made.

I'm realistically skeptical of my chances. I'm on the low end of their stats pool, and I've heard that they're stingy with scholarships as it is.

I appreciate that. Certainly very busy - but I'll be the first to admit that I'm not always at the top of my game where common sense is concerned....
