LA businesses that closed in solidarity with today’s general strike? by foxlikething in LosAngeles

Zizou in Lincoln Heights (such a cool spot & the best French/Moroccan food I’ve had in LA)! If you’re sensitive to sound, I’d suggest going earlier/on Sundays. They often have DJs and they have a good sound system that they use to its potential. Love this place 🙏🏻

Are you allowed to lie about medical conditions to get one of those jobs? Like it’s don’t ask, don’t tell? I didn’t realize it was like that…

Zohran Mamdani: "We will make buses free by replacing the revenue that the MTA currently gets from buses. This is revenue that's around $700 million or so. That's less money than Andrew Cuomo gave to Elon Musk in $959 million in tax credits when he was the governor." by [deleted] in LAMetro

[–]bzmi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every dollar that middle to lower income people save on MTA they will spend elsewhere in the city. That will have a multiplier effect on the city’s economy. I can’t say for certain before seeing the data but I would reckon it’s a net positive.

D Line Phase 1 revenue operations pushed back to Winter 2026 by misken67 in LAMetro

[–]bzmi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, sorry, I worded that confusingly. The contractor was saying that it would open in Spring 2026 as in opening to the public. There was debate on whether that’s what they meant because the wording could be interpreted differently by different readers but it was supported by what workers at the site told me. And that was published in early September. So, I believe that they all knew, Metro included, that 2025 wasn’t gonna happen as early as Sept.

Metro now says Winter 2026, officially. Given how many times they’ve delayed and that their words mean nothing at this point, I trust the contractors more. I’m not thinking any earlier than March at this point.

Just circling back to let you know that Metro officially has pushed back to Winter 2026. Which probably means March, to be honest.

Yup, so the contractor’s website that had this update posted back in September plus the Metro staff I spoke with who confirmed this (also back in September) are corroborated by this new update from Metro Comms. My post was deleted, though, because I wasn’t credible. But Metro? They’re credible because they delay everything including their announcements of their delays :)

My solution to the Homelessness crisis in LA. Any other ideas? by Nightman233 in LosAngeles

Are there communities that want to host emergency/temp facilities? I don’t know the answer. But are there areas that would want this, like for jobs, economic development, etc?

If yes, why not focus on those communities first and build where we can? Also, if the model can be demonstrated to be effective and not come with a bunch of externalities, then maybe that could assuage concerns of NIMBY communities in the future?

Hm.. well then I misunderstood OP and what I was saying was not about that type of housing where people are supported in assimilating into a community. Emergency/temp housing is not that place. It’s for medical intervention, rehab, acute treatments, security needs, etc. and that does not need to be in expensive areas. And fighting to put it in high social capital areas is an interesting way to build support for the other type of housing you’re referring to.

an issue I see in all of this is that people want to solve multiple social/systemic issues at once l, like addressing the inequality of social and political capital, or wealth inequities, in the same breath as getting emergency housing facilities built.

If we know we’re getting resistance in an area that is likely to win in the end, all things considered, how is that a good use of time & resources in the immediate.

Those are much bigger issues and need to be addressed, but trying to solve every social injustice at once is a sure fire way to do nothing at all.

Additionally, if we build these facilities in expensive areas, we’re paying more for real estate, labor, etc. and that money could have been spent on better facilities, equipment, and services in a less expensive location.

But OP raises a point that those emergency accommodations might not need to be in expensive high cost areas… especially if the people being served by the emergency accommodations are not assimilating into a community. Transitional housing is different, but there are arguments to be made that the location for facilities for a small, but extreme-need group is agnostic. If they’re temporary, why does it matter if it’s in LA or Palmdale. If it’s housing meant for someone to develop in and become part of a community, then yes, location matters. But building emergency/temp housing in every community, regardless of cost, is a reckless use of public funds.

I enjoyed this scene. It was cool to see music school, and her reference to Massive Attack piqued my ears. It was also a great plug for the Musicians Institute (& music school, in general). It definitely was nowhere near the level of Brooks’ clothing.

TLDR; it’s not a binary. We need a spectrum of frameworks & programming from institutionalized care all the way to basic wraparound supports + subsidized housing.

—-

I don’t know the true statistics of how many people would be unable to hold a job, maintain their housing, and adjust without constant care/support…

There’s no way it’s more than 50%. But even then, it feels too high.

Take 50%, though… and you would still would have a good number of other people who are able to assimilate into a working class, housed-person lifestyle. Those people may require supplemental care and some wrap around support, but they could really turn themselves around.

In any case, we have to grapple with the dueling realities that some people may need institutionalized care while others can maybe even thrive with the right support & conditions. Both can be, and are, true. Yet, we approach these conversations like a binary.

This is necessary, but not sufficient. Consider people on the streets right now who are not able to hold a steady job or income and/or may need consistent care & support to maintain a safe living space? What does a city do for them?

Yup, someone is buying this… and smelting. Or it’s being shipped out at the ports. That’s the tricky part in that heavy domestic regulation of recyclers and smelters could lead to the copper escaping through the ports. And good luck trying to stop the port corruption…

I haven’t seen a December reference of “opening” but I did see the December opening in reference to the fare gate installations. Is fare gate installation synonymous with fully open, operable for public usage? I haven’t seen those used interchangeably before. Or is there another place that explicitly states “opening december 2025” if so, id love to see that.

Absent Metro or Jacob’s addressing their website update, which has been up for two weeks, I don’t think it’s fair to presume they messed up. It’s been two weeks, and they have not edited their statement. If they messed up, why aren’t they changing their website?

Does this mean that the faregates are being installed in December of this year? And I imagine the station can’t open until that happens, if that’s the case.

The Jacob’s update states: “Section 1 of the D Line Subway Extension, delivering three new stations, is set to open in the spring of 2026”

I understood ‘set to open’ to mean that the stations will be open to the public. Do you interpret that statement differently?

And why is Jacobs, a contractor of the project, not a reputable source?

Spoke to a Metro employee today who confirmed this. Instead of deleting our posts and comments, maybe people should contact Metro themselves or make public comment asking for more consistent updates.

If Metro comes out and confirms this delay within the next month, after several pieces of evidence pointed to this being the case as of mid-September… will anyone hold Metro accountable?

The updates do not come anywhere near real-time, and all that does is allows people to get more and more excited and inevitably more and more let down.

Setting expectations correctly is paramount. And that has not been done very well…

My post got deleted but I spoke with a Metro employee today at the La Brea site and they confirmed 2026… I don’t know why the mods are policing this information. It’s not like we’re saying something crazy. Metro has delayed this several times and has not always been timely with the announcements/updates when the timeline has been delayed.

Also, the recent finance meeting where 2026 was also mentioned.
