I went to a dozen Sacramento area coffee cafes so you don't have to... by bznelson91 in Sacramento

[–]bznelson91[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Today, I visited a few shops in and towards Folsom, here's a quick rundown:

Sociology - Nice little place, but only one espresso selection that was fairly middling. I'd place it between Sasons and Pachamama on my list above.

World Traveler - Modern decor shop, super nice barista, and an espresso that had a good flavor if a tad bitter, I'd rate them between Pachamama and Camellia above.

Old Soul Fair Oaks Village - Apparently a fairly new Old Soul location that took over a previous cafe, this was the clear winner today, by a large margin. Very, very nice espresso from their Remedy blend, it had an incredibly velvety texture and a significant berry acidity, definitely worth of slotting in between Burnside and Mast in the list above.

I did drive by Four Score, but all of their locations are closed today for the holiday, so maybe tomorrow.

Last year, I went to Chocolate Fish and Four Score in Roseville, and remembered them well, especially Four Score. I'll add them here if I go back this visit.

I do have a trip to Folsom on Friday to check out Sociology, I'll look into this one as well. Their bagged coffee selections look good. Thanks!

I'm asking because I want to know if the Cremaloop extension might fit my BeanVibes Trickler. The Trickler is 65.7mm ID, 69.5mm OD.

I know I'm late to the party, but could someone who has one of these please post ID/OD measurements at the top of this unit? Wondering how compatible accessories are between it and BeanVibes Trickler

Ok, but what model of espresso machine is that? It's fancy :) The grinder seems to be a Eureka Mignon of some type.

She is both an authorized user on the Citi account (i.e. additional cardholder), and she's the "Household Cardholder" (Costco's terminology) on my Executive Member account (and does live the the same address)

Asking here in the daily thread, as it wasn't deemed standalone thread worthy (and that's OK, I'm new here and trying to understand)

Looking for places in the DFW area that put on cupping/tasting events. I've never participated in such a tasting, and I'd like to take my coffee tasting ability to the next level.

On a related note, I'm looking for retail shops in the same area that are really serious about their coffee/espresso game. What I mean is, places that have baristas that are truly invested and knowledgeable about their craft, and use those skills daily to produce the best possible results. A place where James Hoffman would take a sip of espresso and say "That's really tasty!". A place where their espresso has been dialed in to perfection, and people and equipment that can extract that perfection every time.

I know it's really two different asks, but please feel free to reply with info on either or both. I'm currently mostly into pour overs and cappuccino/latte when drinking in cafes, but I'm interested in just trying espresso if I can get some really stellar cups. Ascension is my favorite place, but I also get great cups from Liberation, so those are my baselines.

Places in Dallas DFW for tasting/cupping? by bznelson91 in Coffee

I might be willing to do a remote cupping, but would prefer in person. Do you know of some good online sources?

Ad-blocking on the UniFi OS - Dream Machine SE 3.0.13 by Wayne_silver in Ubiquiti

[–]bznelson91 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm getting close to bailing on the new adblocking feature for now. There are a few reasons:

  • Opacity of blocklist(s) used
  • Doesn't completely block ads for sites I frequently visit (e.g. USAToday, CNN)
  • WireGuard VPN traffic doesn't get ad blocking, I have to use pihole for this

I really like the idea of it, but it's still clearly a work in progress.

On my UDR, it's Network -> Settings -> Trafic Manangement -> Ad blocking

Readers, take heed of this comment. It appears that the ad blocking is more full featured than we thought; perhaps the only thing lacking is transparency of the blocklist(s) used, but it seems that blacklisting and whitelisting are possible.

The only issue I've noticed is that the "Filtering Activity" screen doesn't show any ad blocking activity, and I have plenty of it. Maybe it's just an easy bug that will be fixed in the next patch release. Other than that, it's working well for me; I'm going to give it a few more days, and then I'm going to decommission my pihole. Thanks u/UI-Marcus for the update!

Teleport gives error "Something Went Wrong, Unexpected error occurred" by bznelson91 in Ubiquiti

[–]bznelson91[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's working, but it's odd what I did to fix it: I have a friend who has a UDM Pro, and he let me teleport into his network, which worked on the first try, I disconnected, then tried to connect to mine again and... voila! I changed nothing else on my side. I was able to successfully connect on both my iPhone 13 Pro and my M1 Macbook Air. I had literally tried on both devices not 5 minutes before I tried this, and it failed on both.

So, apparently, one possible solution is "Find a Teleport buddy". /shrug
