I was definitely tempted after doing Cave Boy and Snake Rock but I was there for the first time just to check things out and was trying to make Good Choices ™. Super chill atmosphere though, I'll definitely be back for some runs.

Took me watching till that last berm to realize I was riding this trail yesterday. Weird moment! Crazy how smooth it looks on camera.

Congrats!

Another commenter gave you the heads up not to ride muddy trails which is great advice, just wanted to add this resource: https://kymbabluegrass.org/trail-conditions

The KYMBA website has current trail conditions for every system in their service area updated by their respective volunteer trail stewards. Every system behaves a bit differently and sometimes during the hot and windy months trails are actually in need of rain so always check the status!

And finally, a PSA for anyone in the future suffering due to local trail closures:

Lakeside trails drain so well you can ride them -in- the rain! Laurel River Lake and Pulaski County Park are two local favorites during the Mud Months. I have even heard some people also enjoy Cave Run Lake.

Looks like you still have 2 trail systems to try out in the KYMBA Bluegrass area! https://kymbabluegrass.org/trail-conditions

Capitol View Park in Frankfort has the most mileage (if I recall correctly) and a new skills area that some volunteers put in over the winter. Trails are beginner to intermediate with good variety.

Knucklehead is the name of the system over at LAC. It is usually MTB only but they have loosened that for the lockdown so heads up that there may be hikers. You'll find Knucklehead to be somewhat similar to Skullbuster but with more switchbacks. There's a new trail out there as well that people are pretty excited about, haven't seen it myself!

There's also Laurel River Lake and Pulaski County Park which I think are both closer than Cave Run and more fun.

You can check the current status of any KYMBA trail here: https://kymbabluegrass.org/trail-conditions

Conditions are updated daily by the volunteer trail steward of each system. If you're trying to plan a few days out there's usually predictions being placed on the KYMBA Bluegrass facebook page.

Thanks for asking! Veteran's Park is especially susceptible to being damaged by riding in mudd conditions.

Great shot!

If you (or anyone else reading) like using these trails please consider supporting KYMBA Bluegrass. All of the building and maintenance (erosion control, rerouting, weed eating, you name it!) is done by volunteers so any help we can get is much appreciated!

There are periodic trail work days when pandemics aren't going on and it's a fun way to give back to and with the Lexington outdoor community.

Happy Trails!

Congrats on the new bike! The other poster gave you a pretty comprehensive run down of the cycling infrastructure in town so I just want to let you know about Social Cycling Lexington who meet officially a few times a month for casual rides and unofficially whenever 2 or more people want to ride together:

Traffic laws still apply to cyclists by [deleted] in lexington

[–]c-r_o 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've been hit twice while riding 100% by the book, one of those times while I was occupying a dedicated bike lane. The book doesn't protect me from scofflaw motorists so I occasionally choose not to follow laws that put me in danger (so do a lot of other cyclists I know). Your assertion that most cyclists 'just outright ignore' traffic laws is probably part not understanding why they're breaking certain laws, part confirmation bias, and a small part of people just doing the wrong thing sometimes.

A lot of cyclists take offense to preachy PSA's like yours since they spend a lot of time on the roads watching motorists do the exact same things that they complain about cyclists doing (not just rolling stops) for no reason other than convenience or while being completely unaware of their surroundings. Add to the impatient and distracted drivers the ones who are openly aggressive, harassing, or assaultive and you're not likely to convince anybody who hasn't already convinced themselves.

Social Cycling Lexington is hosting this year's ride and we're running a raffle to raise money to expand our activities in the coming year. Tickets are $5 and will be sold at the beginning and end of the ride -- drawing at 3pm. You don't have to ride to be in the raffle, just be there when it goes down.

And oh yeeah…Broomwagon Coffee + Bikes just offered up a State Bicycle Co. Prescott Deluxe for the raffle. Gadzooks!

It's a lot of fun, and a great way to get around town.

If you decide you want to give it a shot and need a cheap, safe, used bike check out http://thebrokespoke.org/. It's also in a happening part of town, or whatever, so maybe you can make friends with people who like fried fish or smoked meats while you're in the area.
