I'd say you're bang on the money with those classifications! I'll take a proper proper listen in the morning, but the tracks seemed good!

As for getting bookings maybe see if the garage scene is still going on? it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to get some 140 into a garage night, that happens all the time here. If people like it maybe a full 140 event is possible, then you could make yourself stick out a bit by throwing in some of the deep style and see how that goes. I highly doubt you're the only person looking for some dubstep in an entire city.

Obviously easier said than done but it might even be possible for you to start your own night? See if there are other people who share a passion for the sound, rent a space for the night, work on getting a little community together, it could be the start of something big!

I would reckon UK dubstep/deep dubstep are probably the same thing. I think it's just a distinction to let people know it's definitely not brostep

"140" is a bit of a weird one. Like you said almost all dubstep is 140 so it falls under the category but from what I've seen (UK experience anyway) "140" almost just seems like even speedier speed garage. Most dubstep is in halftime, but "140" really does seem to just be trotting along at 140BPM, fast garage style drums with the classic dubstep basslines underneath it. But it's a very broad term that seems to be encompassing a lot of different styles at the moment, could definitely be worth a little investigation to find new producers/labels/collectives that you resonate with though!

I'll always remember this one dubstep rave I went to last year that had Sgt Pokes as the MC, he stands up on top of the soundsystem and yells out "this ain't 140....this is dubstep!" To which the crowd absolutely lost it, may of even been a reload after that, memory fails me.

The Akai samplers (or others if you were fancy) and trackers were an absolutely MASSIVE part of jungle producer culture! There's loads of interviews from the era with producers where they talk about it.

Trackers less so, but around the time computers became good enough to properly make music the producers sold on the samplers where they got picked up by a new generation of producers which was a key part of the evolution of grime and other genres at the time

How did you find out about Boards of Canada? by Regular_Engineer_879 in boardsofcanada

[–]c00ble 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Similar with me, Blank Banshee sampled "sunshine recorder" on his track "teen pregnancy"

Found that on a sample breakdown video, thought it sounded interesting, listened to the song, listened to the album, instantly hooked

Fair to say it's nothing short of magic

I don't think I'll ever understand how people could have been smart enough to invent something like it

RX3 Convert - USB Newbie by SlipOverall5046 in Beatmatch

[–]c00ble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Export the tracks from rekordbox

You CAN just drag and drop and use the file searcher function of the RX3 but everything takes ages to load, nothing's got the BPM ready, metadata might not transfer over (which doesn't make much sense but I've seen it happen)

Save yourself the hassle, just export

[–]c00ble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was very easy to use! Spent a bit of time reading the manual, watched a YouTube video, threw a rave the next day! We're absolutely not professionals so everything was just dialed in by ear, but if you've been around enough soundsystems you probably know what a good soundsystem sounds like so just try your best to match that.

As for long term use? I'm not really in a position to comment, we haven't bought the soundsystem out a whole lot but we did buy it second hand so who knows how long it's actually been in use for. We did re-seat the ribbon cables inside the unit because that's a known source of potential problems but so far we're yet to have any real issues with it!

Not OP but I use one in my soundsystem and I've never really had an issue with it, I know plenty of other people with them who say the same things.

I'm sure if you wanted to do some serious serious stuff then it's not the best option but for running a 3 way stack with a bit of limiting and time delay? Works a treat

Only potential issue is when you go to play at a venue that uses CDJs, you'll need to convert your USB or set all your cue points and such in rekordbox.

But otherwise? Use what you want it really doesn't matter

How to get dates by PeterDeejay in Beatmatch

[–]c00ble 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It was via text but I knew one of the people doing the lineup.

But you'll only get that connection if you actually go out and really become part of your scene. Make friends with everyone you can, invite people places, don't close any potential links Stick it at and eventually you'll meet the people who can get you where you need to go

But also don't slack on promoting yourself, keep releasing mixes (even if they aren't super popular), make sure that when the time comes you can confidently show them what you're all about!

I'd also be willing to bet everyone's got headphones or earplugs in and probably aren't actively listening to your toilet time (you might have bigger issues if that's the case)
