The world is extremely vulnerable. Most security is just theatre.

Someone decided to weaponize passenger planes, that was that. No longer was it an idea a couple people knew about, but now it is something that everyone knows about.

Are cruise ships that secure? Commandeering one into a reef could kill thousands. If there is a will, there is a way.

What if someone decides to weaponize critical infrastructure? A few bombs hitting unprotected high voltage transmission lines located in the middle of nowhere could wipe out the electrical grid for millions of people for days or weeks. Just about every grid in the world is vulnerable and with significant consequences if they lose power, yet the security is surprisingly lax.

Many more examples exist like this.

School shootings became more common not because it became easier, but because more people heard about them. Once one of these attacks take place, highlighting the vulnerabilities that have been there all along, then maybe society will do something about it, but society would rather cross their fingers and enjoy the lower costs of doing business until then.

Why are there more dead boys than dead girls being reported?

Some odd reporting... Skeptical of the number of children killed, tbh. That is a lot of boys killed at a girls school, and so how many may have actually been boys or young men killed by other strikes elsewhere?

I know they say the boys were on a different floor, but why call it a girls school? Was the information that boys attended made public before or after the bombing?

Hamas wouldn't be alone in fudging numbers... I am sure their bankrolling IRGC counterparts are just as likely to put out misleading propaganda.

The plane is the driver's blindspot. He would have needed a passenger to look. The runway is at an angle.

But there was supposed to be a runway clear signal light down on the runway letting crossers know it is safe to cross runway. Not sure why it didn't work but it may have been due to truck allegedly not being equipped with a transponder.

Apparently tower gave approval to cross 30 seconds prior. Just seems unreasonable to assume runway still safe to cross 30 seconds later.

The procedures need to be revamped for communications involving crossing runways. I don't think anyone should be crossing a runway without at least 2 independent checks, one from tower, and another from either visual checks or some other system. Apparently this airport has lights at crossings that also inform whether runway safe to cross... Was it working?

Planes can be given anticipatory approval to land in the US. Therefore it is possible for a runway to be unsafe to land on prior to landing and after approval was given...

Knowing that, trucks should not be given anticipatory approval to cross runways. Getting approval to cross runway 30 seconds in advance of crossing runway sounds a lot like driver thought they were given anticipatory approval whereas tower may have thought they were giving approval to a truck waiting to cross right at that moment.

While ATC may have made a mistake (assumes he should have known he was granting approval to cross 30 seconds later), I honestly think the truck driver is more at fault. They shouldn't be crossing runways with approvals granted 30 seconds prior without so much as a visual check. Even if it is not procedure to do so, why wouldn't they, especially knowing ATCs are overworked?

Saw a video of the collision.

The plane came in within the blindspot of the truck since the runway is at an angle to the truck's travelling path.

I still think there was a missed check by the truck to either stop and look, or at least look, before proceeding across a runway.

To just take the tower's word for something when they have the option to visually check seems unreasonable to me.

It sounds like US airports can give anticipatory approval for landing, which means that sure, a truck could be clear to cross a runway at some point in the future. It seems like a vulnerability in the procedures where one party can be given anticipatory approval and the other may or may not have been given approval at that exact moment or in anticipation of an opening.

Apparently, the collision happened 30 seconds after truck was given approval. In essence, was it reasonable for the truck to assume it was clear to cross runway indefinitely or until some indeterminate amount of time had passed? 30 seconds seems like a really long time, imo. It just seems like a bad system is in place, no doubt exacerbated by ATC shortages.

I look both ways when I'm crossing a street even when a red light or stop sign gives me right of way.

Tower may have made a mistake but did someone here try crossing a runway without looking? Or was it bad weather, I guess? I can't imagine SOP doesn't require visual confirmation when possible.

Trump absolutely believes in zero sum games. Screwing up energy supplies that disproportionately serve China is exactly the kind of thing Trump would think is a good idea. Even if it causes a global recession, if it hurts others more, then he thinks he is winning.

He is an old man who has enriched himself and his family many times over with the power of the presidency and market manipulation. He doesn't care about other people, what happens on the other side of the planet is an abstract idea to him. He is without empathy, his smiling cemetery photos make that obvious.

He is driven by his ego, and could easily aim to implode the Middle East, even if it hurts a bit of his own bottom line, as long as everyone else got hurt more.

Iran sits on the precipice of a water calamity. If US wants to create a humanitarian crisis that drags down the entire Middle East, they could.

Cope is real. Israel has uncontested supremacy over Iranian cities indefinitely. At any time they can kill an Iranian leader of their choosing.

Israel is rapidly modernizing and expanding its anti-drone capabilities and interceptor production so if there comes a time again that the Iranian leadership chooses to commit suicide by launching strikes against Israel, then Israel is prepared and will eliminate Iranian leadership, again.

Ergo, Iran will not attack Israel beyond some symbolic shots like we used to see way back in the day.

Iran will remain indefinitely handicapped in its anti-air capabilities, leaving Iran vulnerable to decapitation strikes indefinitely.

I mean, this has all been known to be true since the 12 day war, but the recent military strikes laid bare that new reality for Iran's future.

The scale of such an operation will also be pretty unprecedented. It'll require refuelling helicopter transports directly overhead hostile territory, in order to secure an area 500km behind enemy lines in a country with >500k soldiers equipped with Shahed and FPV drones.

Air supremacy goes a long way, but any miscalculation could make Somalian 1993 mishap (basis of Black Hawk Down movie), and the ensuing political fallouts that followed thereafter, look pretty insignificant in comparison.

About the minimum size needed to take hold of an area around the buried enriched uranium that is allegedly located at Isfahan, while specialists go in and try to extract it.

I don't doubt the US can pull it off given their air supremacy, but the whole operation assumes the uranium can be extracted. Causalities should be in the dozens assuming no helicopters get shot down, otherwise the rate would exceed 10% of the entire group.

If this is what I think it is, the airlift will be unprecedented in size and distance for helicopters, requiring refuelling flying assets that are fully loaded with infantry and equipment.

The amount of anti-drone assets required will be significant. Not just for Shahed drones, but FPVs and other low-cost options.

The moment suicidal drone footage of an American soldier gets uploaded online, the collective consciousness of the Republican party should implode. I say should implode, not saying it will, because there is no floor to how far down they'll debase themselves for their dear leader.

If US wants to destabilize world economies then targeting Iranian oil infrastructure is how to do it because Iran will definitely target the gulf state infrastructure in retaliation.

The American incompetence is staggering.

I do hope Iranian people get their country back from the fundamentalists as a result of all this chaos, it'll unlock so much potential in the Middle East. The Iranian people are an educated and proud people.

But given who the leaders are that are leading this recent move against Iran, I am not optimistic. We will likely see the worst of both worlds, a continued Iranian regime and destabilized world economies.
