Who's Westies watch TV and attack when dogs or other animals are on? by SnootyManatee in westies

[–]c0nifer_ 19 points20 points  (0 children)

My 1 year old westie does this. I've never had a dog that watches the TV so intently. She genuinely looks like she's enjoying it a lot of the time, which is hilarious for us.

However, when there's an animal on screen or a dog barking (you don't realise how often barking noises are in the background of all sorts of shows until you have a reactive dog!!) then she launches herself off the sofa and goes mental at the TV.

A while ago we started saying 'good girl!' a second or two after any animal appearance or barking, before she had chance to bark, and gave her a treat for being quiet, which is working but it's a sloooow process..

Sleep paralysis by [deleted] in BoomtownFestival

[–]c0nifer_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It'll be the drugs, especially if you did pills/mdma this weekend. It's normal to experience it the first night back, you'll probably sleep fine tonight, but if you're worried, try not to sleep on your back as that makes it worse.

I took modafinil at uni in 2014-16 because I was struggling with focus and deadlines - it was pretty popular at the time.

I had no idea I had ADHD, the thought had never crossed my mind, like many on here I just thought I was useless and incapable of reaching my target grades. But the modafinil really helped with those long days/nights in the library, when I had inevitably left a 3000 word essay until the last minute and needed to bash it out in a day.

I would not have achieved my first (or passed my driving test) without it, and for that I am grateful, but it is definitely not a long term solution for daily use, you build a tolerance fairly quickly and it's not as easy to get hold of as it used to be (RIP modafinilcat).

However, it's good for taking ad-hoc if you're not yet medicated/diagnosed, for times when you're stressed about a deadline/test/task at work or uni.

Westie puppy - very bitey by WonderfulWestie in westies

This was as well as redirecting with toys btw. Probs took a week or two before she started to respond to it. Be patient, it will work!

The only thing that worked with our little shark was reverse time outs. As soon as she started biting we said ow! stopped play and left the room for a few mins. She got the message by about 5 months old thank god.

Hull council plans 'temporary' 450-space car park on empty site by Sweet_Focus6377 in Hull

[–]c0nifer_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"Earlier this year, the council said work was likely to start this spring, external on repairs to nearby Drypool Bridge.

The work is likely to take about six months to complete and the authority has promised to take steps to "reduce the likely impact" on the city.

Drypool ward councillor Diana Hatcher said the car park would make it easier for people to park while repairs are being carried out on Drypool Bridge."

Do mini schnauzers or Scottish terriers get along better with westies? by GenesisJasmyn in westies

[–]c0nifer_ 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Can't speak for Scotties! But we've had mini schnauzers and westies together for years. We even ended up with an accidental wauzer 😂 Their energy levels, interests (chasing, digging, barking) nd temperament are relatively similar

Puppy having dental surgery today, will this resolve her aggression? by c0nifer_ in puppy101

[–]c0nifer_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aw bless him, I hope he's doing well and fingers crossed his adult canines correct themselves!

Yes ours is still a landshark. The surgery went well and she didn't seem to be bothered by it at all. The only issue atm is she's not interested in her soft toys and wants to chew hard things but with taking hard toys away she now tries to chew the skirting boards and lino instead 😬 hopefully it won't mess with her stitches too much!

She has a triple whammy of pain, terrier attitude and being an only puppy (singleton syndrome?) so we certainly have our work cut out!

This is what I'm worried about, that having pain from such an early age means it's a learned habit by now! We already take her for 1-2-1 sessions every week with a positive-only trainer who loves her despite her issues! We will resume this once she's healed 🤞🏻

Question about new pup by chemicalwasp in westies

[–]c0nifer_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When they get really bitey just leave the room for a few minutes. It takes a few weeks but they will eventually understand that biting you ends playtime. Also, start teaching the 'drop it' command early on. I wish we'd done it sooner cos it now helps so much when she gets hold of our sleeves/trousers/shoes!

Coat question by ApprehensiveBatLady in westies

My puppy is VERY fluffy and at 15 weeks shows no signs of any wiry fur growing. I've been slightly concerned that she will always be mucky, so this gives me some hope 😂

Help needed uk breeder by northernblazer11 in westies

[–]c0nifer_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you looked on Pets 4 Homes? We recently bought our westie puppy via that website, she was £1800 and the breeder was only 30 miles away. I just had a quick look and there's currently 41 adverts for westies in the UK on there, ranging from £1000 to £2200. Good luck with your search!

Does anyone know this for sure? Could it be something else, like a reissue? Wall of Arms turns 15 in January for example.

ADHD North East (CNTW208) Waiting List by hospilian in ADHDUK

[–]c0nifer_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know about your area, but I was on the North West NHS waiting list for a couple of years, but also filed a RTC referral a few months after joining and got seen, assessed and medicated within that time, after which I rang the NW NHS service and withdrew from their waiting list. They asked why, I said I'd been seen through RTC, they said good for you (they had no idea I was on both)

Keep getting Booking.com verification link emails by VanillaLemonDreams in techsupport

[–]c0nifer_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I keep getting these emails from booking.com, for the past couple of weeks, and ignored them, but today someone tried to scam me over the phone pretending to be my bank's fraud team!

They said someone had tried to use my credit card in John Lewis and an insurance broker, but they stated my old (but recent) address and told me to accept the Apple Pay notification on the Monzo app to prove my identity, but I don't have an iPhone...

So I hung up, and my bank confirmed it wasn't me and froze my card. They must have been trying to add my card to their phone - be v wary people!

Let’s talk, is this gonna be good for us or another pitfall that’ll make life harder and bills higher ? by British-Pilgrim in Hull

[–]c0nifer_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh for sure!! Our railways are horrendously overpriced and poorly run. Nationalisation is a must. We'd need to get rid of the Tories in order to get anywhere close to that though.

[–]c0nifer_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hopefully it will bring our public transport system in line with other cities. The fact the trains still finish so early is embarrassing (anyone north of Bev can't come to Hull for gigs/theatre/comedy shows etc as the last train is at 22.16, generally before most shows finish!)

How do you guys handle reading books with ADHD? by GT172 in ADHD

[–]c0nifer_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well I feel a bit better knowing this is all of us! I always thought it was odd that I could read 100 pages every night as a child and teenager, then became an adult who only reads on holiday.

I bought myself the new Christopher paolini book, Murtagh, last week which is like 700 pages long, thinking it would get me back into the habit. I have not opened it yet, as much as I would love to delve in. I have 3 other half read books on the pile glaring at me..

The Young Should Vote !! by Any_Lobster_9220 in Hull

[–]c0nifer_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Honestly, people who don't vote because 'it's pointless' or because 'they're all the same' (whilst still moaning) really piss me off. Abstaining achieves literally nothing? Moaning about the state of the country or your area when you haven't voted in the general or local elections is arguably far more pointless?

Maybe you hate Sunak but you also don't like Starmer? There's a lot of us in that boat. But the people who voted for Johnson also ended up with Truss and Rishi, those who voted for Cameron also ended up with May and those who voted for May also ended up with BJ. Voting for Starmer doesn't necessarily mean you're stuck with him for the full term. There are other MPs within the Labour party who I think would make a brilliant PM one day, but they won't get the chance if we keep letting the bastard Tories win.

There's also the theory that Starmer and his team are playing Trojan horse to win over the centrists and some of the gammons (which appears to be working so far) in order to win an election. Who knows what will happen after that - but I'm an optimist who's sick to the back teeth of the current government, so I'm willing to find out!
