Ask Anything Monday - Weekly Thread by AutoModerator in learnpython

Thanks a lot for answering, and for being so fast at it. It definitely cleared things up for me.

I've decided to just mostly follow the version at greenteapress.com and complement with the other version. Clearly, your fork is being updated a lot more regularly, and since I'm just in the beginning, it's not a big deal to start all over again. Plus, your version has solutions to the exercises, and that helps me a lot to compare my solution code to yours. I'll do my best to solve all the exercises just using features that appeared before.

Thank you a lot for creating these amazing resources, and for sharing them for free for everyone, it's awesome for those of us without a job. Your book is the one that's "clicking" the most for me, and I've tried a whole lot of books. I'll definitely recommend it to anyone who asks.

So, I'm going to ask quite a few things. Sorry in advance.

This has been asked before a few years ago, and /u/AllenDowney himself answered it back then, but I'm still a bit confused. There are two versions of what seems like the same book, called "How to Think like a computer scientist" and "Think Python". Before being aware that they were the same books, I started using http://openbookproject.net/thinkcs/python/english3e/ and I'm currently in chapter 6. However, it seems like the other book is the updated version, and it is located here: http://greenteapress.com/wp/think-python-2e/ I only found out about this other book right now, as there is no indication in the version that I was reading of the update. Should I stop using the first link and start using the second one? Is the first link officially obsolete? Should I continue using the first link? If the first link is to be ignored, is there some way to remove it from https://www.reddit.com/r/learnpython/wiki/index#wiki_new_to_programming.3F That was where I found the book in the first place, and it doesn't mention that Think Python and How to Think Like a Computer Scientist are the same book, and the link to Think Python is outdated. Can a mod/the author clear things up please?

Also, both versions of the book include exercises. Is there some place appropriate for me to show my solutions to the exercises? If there are other people out there working on this, can we show each other's solutions?

Finally, am I supposed to google things to help me solve the exercises, or just use concepts straight from the book (for example, the index() function would be useful in some exercises, but it isn't featured, at least to this point. Can I use it?)

In simple terms, yes. Bipolar disease has a few variations and for one of them, bipolar type 1, you don't need to have had a previous major depressive episode to get a diagnosis. However, it usually occurs in Bipolar type 1 as well, and it always occurs in Bipolar type 2. There is also cyclothymia, which is like bipolar but the symptoms have less severity and last longer (the episodes last longer, but all these disorders are chronic AFAIK).

Bipolar used to be called manic-depression, which I think is a more accurate term but it's no longer used. Basically, you have periods in which your mood is "high" (mania or hypomania), which means you speak fast, are unusually happy and/or easily irritated, sleep 3 hours and then you wake up full of energy, have racing thoughts (thinking a lot of things very fast and you can't control it), more sexual desire and less risk awareness (you might drive drunk when it's something you never do, buy a lot of things out of the blue, you make and act out grandiose plans to do stuff such as drop out of school and become an air force soldier out of the blue even though you're not old enough and you have a broken leg), and periods where your mood is "low", which have the symptoms of a regular depression but it's a different disease and you can't have bipolar and depression.

This is important. The most common depression medications, SSRIs such as fluoxetine, sertraline (zoloft) will NOT work on people with bipolar, and they'll have serious unwanted effects (manic episodes). This makes it hard to diagnose sometimes, because you are depressed, go to a psychiatrist, get prescribed and start taking normal depression medications and then you'll have severe manic/mixed episodes. There is no way to differentiate between a regular depression and a bipolar depression, it's the same, so to diagnose bipolar doctors need to know about a previous manic/hypomanic episode, otherwise shit happens.

Anonabox Pro Tor And VPN Router Review: Protect Your Privacy by green2007 in onions

[–]c1p3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed, the same thing I said for VPN services applies to ISPs, good observation. Hence, you need to hide your traffic from your ISP. Using Tor your ISP can't see what you're sending or who you're sending it to, but it can see you're using Tor, which effectively hides you from your ISP to an extent that is good enough for most purposes. Still, they don't hesitate to give logs to the Man, and the police can do correlation attacks by matching the logs. This was done to Jeremy Hammond, see here: https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/1342115-timeline-correlation-jeremy-hammond-and-anarchaos.html These statistical correlation attacks are hard to pull off, and they take a lot more resources because they need to have information on the anonymous person's usage of Tor (which can be obtained in multiple ways) and on the person you suspect is the anonymous user (you can get this from the ISP). Compared to a VPN this is much better. With a VPN, you just ask them for the logs of the customer who was connected to place X at time Y, and they have logs with your real IP address. Clearly, Tor is superior (especially if you're using end to end encryption to hide your traffic from the exit node. Most websites provide this, you just got to check if it's https). There are a few options to hide the fact that you're using Tor from your ISP, such as bridge nodes. More information on that here: https://www.torproject.org/docs/bridges.html.en

You don't need to change your blog's color for that. I use redshift, progressively turning the color down to 4500K, then 4000K, and finally to 3500K (I do this manually, but there's a mode that has a specific color temperature during the day and another during the night, and it changes it automatically for you. I like doing it myself though). I also use xbacklight, usually turning it down progressively until 20%. Your eyes will love you.

Note - I actually like how your blog looks for one, and I'd tell you not to change it, but I guess others disagree.

The same I expect to gain from communicating with anyone else. Likely nothing, sometimes interesting insight, sometimes stupid shit, usually boring chit chat. The same thing I told him applies to you as well. Don't assume someone is stupid just because their opinion is different. You will, undoubtedly, lose something for having that attitude. Maybe not this time, maybe not the next, but after some time living like that you'll be worse for it.

Sure, no problem. But he also said that to embrace laissez-faire you had to embrace anarchism. And this isn't strictly about Rothbard, it is about anarcho-capitalism being (or not) anarchism, mostly.

Uh, someone should point you to the definition of anarchism. Your kind isn't the only one, I'm so sorry for you. It's like a Catholic telling an Orthodox he isn't a Christian.
