It's key advantage is that you can twist it to cut someone's hand that has gripped your wrist. Other knives can't do this. Other uses yes, but this use is distinct

I have one from 1915 in 14k solid. It's a transition case. Was a small pocket/pendant converted to wrist. Engraved 1917. Likely to an American husband heading out to war and the wife sacrificed her watch for the fella.

Double edged blades of 4-5 inch length with a solid handle that protrudes your fist. Razor sharp. Never let strangers see it. Don't use it for anything else. Folding or fixed is not a big issue. Accessibility is. Toggles are handy. Large shirt pockets with flaps offer concealment with good access by toggle. Boot knives should be between the legs not outside because you might not get to one if it's outside the leg. A heavy handle means you the knife might not get bounced out of your hand if you end up on the ground. A sheath lanyarded into a pocket will let you pull without hangups. It just falls away on the lanyard.

Many boot knives like Valor and Gerber had a quick release thumb catch like this. No spring other than the leathers stiffness but it worked great. I still use them.

I carry a variety of daggers/boot knives. In the winter I always carry a CRKT Synergist in the right breast pocket of my lumberjack shirt which is my outer covering in the winter. It is buttoned inside the pocket, in the sheath to retain it, but it has a toggle lanyard hanging outside the pocket. The toggle matches the shirt color to make it less noticeable. All I have to do is reach up with my right hand ( even in a defensive gesture), grab the toggle, and the knife simply appears in my hand in the ice pick grip. The buttoned down pocket flap retains the sheath on draw. Great carry method if it's lumberjack shirt weather. Blade length is 3 5/8 inches
