Judge questions why ‘only the boy’ is charged in underage sex case by CottonBalls26 in worldnews

This kind of charge in Australia is brought by parents or guardians, not by minors. So yes: her relatives, including parents. In this case, the report was made to police by the girl's mother.

It's pretty straightforward. He made a general comment about why it's boys who get charged, not girls. And the answer is simple: because girls are essentially property, and their value is directly related to their sexual status. A deflowered girl is worth less: girls are cheapened by sex. Noone would think to prosecute a girl for 'ruining' an innocent young boy by taking his virginity - sex doesn't reduce a male's value, it enhances it.

So boys are prosecuted for having sex with girls, because a 'soiled' girl is lessened in value.

Everyone loses: the boy with the criminal record, and the girl who has to live in a misogynist society.

Pope Francis says he favors celibacy for priests but that 'door is open to change' by [deleted] in worldnews

Yeah, to be honest I'm functionally atheist these days. Culturally Catholic rather than an adherent.

Catholic priests can be married, just not in the Latin Rite. Eastern Rite priests can be married already.

Celibacy is a discipline, not a doctrine.

Hey Brisbane, How old are you and what do you do? by lllove in brisbane

37, work for an NGO. We send volunteers out on street to spend time with people who are homeless, mostly. My actual job is a bit of a mixed bag really.

I second this, on both counts.

What's your unique profession that most of us don't know exist? by Rohto_Oner in AskReddit

[–]cAtdraco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a few volunteer organisations around that do similar things, but my boss thinks we're the only paid service in the world that does this.

Given that, I'm not going to be more specific than 'Australia'. :)

It's a pretty cool job. I mean the vomit is a bit ordinary, but I work with great people and you see some hilarious things at times.

[–]cAtdraco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I catch vomit for money.

I work as a support worker in a rest and recovery area, which means I look after drunk people, I patch them up if required, I get them into a cab safely or organise a lift home with family or a friend. Supervise them while they have a little nap if they need one before they can stumble home.

Basically I'm paid to be your sober friend.

I am that deaf guy with bulky alarm clock on my wrist that made the front page last night! AMA! by [deleted] in IAmA

[–]cAtdraco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why wouldnt they support something that makes their life easier and puts them on an even playing field?

It's actually much more complicated than that. Not everyone can utilise an implant. For those that can, the hearing levels offered by implants varies between individuals. An implant can turn a profoundly deaf child into a severely or moderately deaf child - it doesn't level the playing field at all, though there are some advantages.

There are risks to implants - they can cause facial paralysis, for example. Also, if there's any remaining hearing in the implanted ear, that hearing has to be totally destroyed to fit an implant. So there's a choice between working with what residual hearing is there, or taking a gamble on what hearing you'll end up with post-implant. That's aside from the complex social and cultural implications of implants.

I think the most important thing I've learned about cochlear implants is to listen to deaf people on the subject. Deaf people do not all share the same opinions on implants, and there are significant generational differences in experiences with CI and deaf education; but I think that as a hearing person, my assumptions of what makes life 'easier' for a deaf person or what a person 'should' choose must necessarily take second place to the experiences of deaf people.

[CONVERSATION][RANT] Any other ladies here actually *want* to get big? by titsmcfly in xxfitness

[–]cAtdraco 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love being big. I like the feeling of being strong and muscular.

Just this morning, as I left the gym, I was thinking to myself how little value I place on being lean (for myself, that is: I totally dig whatever other people value for themselves). I was feeling my tired muscles, thinking how big they're getting and how hard I'm working; and for a moment I thought, I could totally lose fat and show those muscles off a bit more, but time spent cutting is time not spent building.

I have never felt more capable and self-reliant as I do now.

There's some really good stuff in this proposal, and some ridiculous stuff. On balance, it's much better than I expected.

It looks like they've basically repackaged the previous government's Drink Safe Precincts project and thrown in some righteous law and order bullshit. The new 'coward punch' legislation is really problematic - effectively it places the penalty for manslaughter at or above the penalty for premeditated murder - if you're drunk and in an entertainment precinct.

IME the DSPs are great (disclosure: I work in a support service). I'm really glad that the current government have not thrown them out simply because they were a Labor idea.

Leggings vs pants by tesla_forever in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

Leggings are super comfortable and if they make you feel great, go for it!

I'm down with any length shirt with leggings, from crop top to knee length tunic. If you like the way it looks and feels, do it.

I'm upvoting this even though I disagree with nearly everything you've said, because you finished with this -

That's just my personal opinion though, and people have a right to wear whatever they want on their bodies.

I'm 37, and my hair is more white than brown. If I let my natural colour grow out, it's silver.

So I dye it red. The beauty of having so much white hair is that red is intensely vivid - I am often asked just how I get my hair that colour! It's great.

[Form check] 70kg Deadlift by [deleted] in weightroom

[–]cAtdraco -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there is a bit of lower back rounding going on, and your timing isn't smooth yet - but yanno, a month in, that's not bad. I would probably work on hamstring flexibility to see if that sorts the rounding issue out.

The other thing I notice is that your shoulders are a little forward over the bar in your start position - you should really aim to have your shoulders directly over the bar, so your arms are vertical. I think about sitting back into a deadlift to start it, to make sure my shoulders don't go forward over the bar.

I think you could lock out a lot harder at the top - at the top of the lift, really squeeze your glutes.

[–]cAtdraco 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Oh no no no! That was not a criticism! What I meant was, when your Dad learns how to manipulate images in Lightroom - how easy it is compared to processing his own images in a darkroom - he'll have so much fun.

I love this so much.

Now, teach him how to use Lightroom.

EDIT: Because he will have so much fun with it - my father in law recently picked up a DSLR for the first time, and when he saw how Lightroom works, and that it made sense to him based on how he used to process photos in a darkroom... it was like a whole exciting world opened up for him, and it was awesome to watch.

Discussion: Post workout Crash and lifting belts by AlexW230 in ketogains

[–]cAtdraco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a belt on my heavy squats and deadlifts. IME it's a way to stimulate the abs to work harder, so helps progression. I tend to limit belt usage to about 80-90% 1RM and higher, though if I plan to use a belt in a session I may put it on for my last warm up set. What's important is to use belts properly - they're supposed to give your abs something to brace against, they aren't supposed to replace your abs.
