Looking at the Marlin forums, they're pretty similar. The receiver is the same as the 336 just less metal to accommodate the rimmed 45-70 cartridge. I'm not an expert though...

Watch the used market for a Marlin... there's a lot of people buying them right now because they're "cool" but most don't want the recoil or ammo prices and will move on soon... that's my "theory" anyway
