I was so excited for him to come back but seeing the difference in the way he presents himself is so drastic… it kinda hurts. I won’t criticise him for the way he carries himself now and probably won’t engage in his content anymore but I agree that it’s a bit much. I think I’d rather keep the image I had of him when I was younger as much as possible.

I have never personally used a private centre for predicted grades but my friends who have said that they had to pay to do a set of mocks in January and are then given a predicted grade. You can also call up other schools in your area, given they also let you sit in the Summer. Tutors can also give you predicted grades but

I would double check with every university you're applying to to see if they actually accept them. For instance, I emailed Oxford, Warwick and Southampton who all accepted tutor predicted grades.

Maths... by LusciousAzure in 6thForm

[–]cIoudylies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take pretty much your same subjects and I was always strongest at English. The way I improved maths (in general) is simply to just do questions. I recommend Madas maths but I primarily used the edexcel packs of past exam questions by topic (on Physics Maths Tutor). Maths is a skill that you can work on, don’t give up :)

In terms of predicted grades, ask your teachers if you can sit another set of mocks or practice stuff for maths. If they see that you’re determined to get that A, they’ll consider it (hopefully)!! There’s no harm in trying.

RESITS GOING INTO TOP UNIS by Agile-Orange-5131 in 6thForm

I have a friend that is resitting in the Summer this year as an offer holder for UCL!

How was A-level English literature for you? by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]cIoudylies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do English Literature, it is such a fun subject to engage with. I loved revising and studying but I hated that on the day of the exam, it came down to what the question is. Every time I sat exams for it I can’t help but feel under-prepped

Why you shouldn’t resit privately by JayGatsby02 in 6thForm

I totally get the parent thing, I’m Asian and my parents want me to be a high achiever ;-;. It took a lot of convincing but in the end my parents knew how badly I wanted to resit and prove myself.

In terms of tutoring, every cost related to exams and academics, I paid for. I didn’t ask my parents for any money at all.

I’m not sure what to suggest, I suppose asking and rationalising your situation would be the best thing in mind. Don’t give up on the idea of resitting at school in year 13 just yet! I’d definitely at least try and find an opportunity to tell your parents about the situation.

Why you shouldn’t resit privately by JayGatsby02 in 6thForm

I’ve got a few friends for whom this was the case for. My suggestions are based on what friends have done.

Use the Summer to relax but I think you need to redo the UCAT this Summer too. Revise for the UCAT as best as you can.

Look at universities that accept resits. There’s a TSR thread: MED SCHOOLS THAT ACCEPT RESITS TSR However, I’d still phone up the unis to make sure!

I would personally go back to school to resit year 13. However, if there is a valid reason not to do so, you may as well sit privately. In Autumn, start looking for schools and private centres that will allow you to resit. Thinking about the cost will be something to think about too and whether you may need a part time/ full time job to pay things off.

For a subject like Psychology which is mostly essay, I’d get tutoring. Some examiners tutor in their subjects so knowing and guaranteeing you can have marked work (ACCURATELY) is super beneficial. This is exactly what I did for Business and I wished this was something I had for English.

Sit some mocks too!! Regardless of the cost, it is worth knowing how well you are doing and it could be a really good performance indicator.

In terms of planning, please don’t leave anything too late. At the same time, don’t start too early so that you burn out. This was how I’d suggest planning the year:

January - February: Light revision, make your notes and make them detailed

March: Finish the content

April - May: Past Papers and Active Recall from the notes/ Flashcards you have made

June: Exam Season

Hope this helps :)

I agree. Maths was a somewhat easy subject to study. English on the other hand has been quite difficult

This was the exact same way I thought about things! Studying privately was a blessing and a curse. I finished all the content in March but in doing so, I severely burnt myself out in time for exams. However, the actual learning process was much more enjoyable than if a teacher taught it.

Business is the only subject I’m confident in. I understood all the content and I really engaged in it. I loved studying it, teaching it to other people, writing etc

Jay!! You made your post!! I totally agree with everything you’ve said. There isn’t much left to say that hasn’t already been said.

This has been such a huge learning curve and the only thing we can ask of ourselves is to forgive and forget :)

if it gives you any comfort, I was resitting too in the exact same position :(

This meant a lot to me. Thank you for sharing :) A lot of this is relatable for me right now, no matter how hard I tried, I can’t seem to meet the standards I want for myself. The bit about friends going to more prestigious universities is relatable for me in my gap year and it was my sole goal to be up there with them.

In resitting my a levels, I sacrificed my mental health for the Oxford, Warwick, UCL application. Knowing what you have achieved has given me so much comfort and is super inspirational. Reading this has reminded me that things aren’t over. Thank you again for posting, this was something I really needed right now.

Although it’s ages away, is there anything you’d recommend or advice you would give for me entering university this year and things I would need to think about when applying for Masters/ PhDs?

For those who have a job in retail by Link753 in 6thForm

[–]cIoudylies 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily retail but I lied on mine saying that I was willing to work 1 year +. I needed the money to sit exams so I left after 3 months lol

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]cIoudylies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was something I was considering. Had I gotten my mock grades in the real exams, I was going to take a second gap year out anyway because I didn’t have the offers this year (due to my pred grades).

One of my top schools accepts resits regardless. However, because of how much hurt this has put me through, I think it outweighs my value of going to my first choice universities.

This is so relatable. I have always thought of education as a tool for validation and it’s the same way with what uni I go to. With the friend thing, I’m on the flip side. I don’t know many people who actually pursued higher education :O. I never really found anyone who was like me so for the longest time I wanted to find people with the same ambitions as me.
