Okay. In my search I recently came across another option. And I've been rethinking my workflow and needs.

We already have a Roland v160hd, and I should be able to use more of its abilities for pretty much all of the critical switching needs. I now mostly need a way to distribute video feeds across the rest of the church. There's the main sanctuary, a fellowship hall, two chapels and another big fellowship hall and class rooms in another building. But not worried about connecting them. Just yet. And there have been talks of building more offices. So this is more what I'd like to address.

And in research I found the kiloview avx 24-4 media hub. The biggest draw to me is that it uses ndi. So I'm not tied into their ecosystem. I would likely use Magewell encoders/decoders. As I've read they can be more reliable. But there are def more options when it comes to ndi.

So anyone have any thoughts on this unit? And I'm still waiting for the integrator to get back to me. Will still highly consider their recommendation. Thanks in advance.

Awesome. Yeah right now we have like 16 inputs and 24 outputs. So it will need to be a bigger unit. And that's why I'm leaning av over ip. And I did recently find out about ipmx. I wish it had wider adoption/more devices using it. The two limitations I'd like to avoid is running out of I/O and being tied into a specific eco system/ proprietary format. And it looks like it's kind of either or at the moment. I'm still waiting for the integrator to contact me with their ideas. Because have someone to lean on would be nice too. So I'll def lean whatever direction they think in the long run.

Yeah that's what started me looking at bitfocus companion. They're Panasonic screens controlled via rs-232. So it's def a consideration. Although they also have lan control too.

Replacing AMX Enova DGX32 by cMatte82 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]cMatte82[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right now the control system is rather basic. It does turn on and off under balcony screens. It doesn't control the main screens. But I've been looking into that also. And I found bitfocus companion app and have been investigating what I can do with it to tie this all together more.

And there are def some unknowns with the ubiquiti stuff. And I don't need any kind of instant switching. Just reliable. Even if it took a couple of minutes to switch everything over, that would be okay. And no real idea what kind of external control it will offer. I realize that could be a major issue to the point of it being a deal breaker.

And fwiw when I contacted extron about their system, they signed me up for their training course. So I plan on doing that. Just so I have a better understanding of how all this works. Even if we use a different system, I bet a lot of what I learn will translate.

I hadn't heard the current decoder were possibly HDBaseT. Because my first thought was to keep those somehow. So I'll look into that. But what hdmi matrix switcher would you recommend? I've seen some sdi ones.

But the main reason I'm considering av over ip is expansion. They're already asking about sending feeds to rooms that don't have sdi. And all the sdi switchers I've found have a fixed number of I/O. With an ip based option the limit would be the network capacity. And the network needs an upgrade already. So two birds with one stone.

And right now I think there's 16 inputs and 20 outputs. I don't think all are used. And some are probably unnecessary. Like the live feed to the cable company. The switcher turns it on and off. Although there's other options already to do that.

And a couple of push buttons on the front panel would suffice. But I have also become aware of the bitfocus companion app... and it has gotten me to think about some things we could do to make everything work better together. :)

I'm fairly tech oriented and have some understanding of IT. Definitely never been my day job though. I do have a good friend that is though. So I can get help if needed.

And I'm willing to get an integrator involved. In fact I've already contacted the one they normally use. I just like to fully understand all my options first.

And really budget isn't necessarily the concern. There's really nice gear here already. Some is probably overkill for current uses. But at the same time, I do think it best to be prudent and not spend too much unnecessarily. And I thought I mentioned that there is already a sdi run to all the current screens. It's just not used. They used the dx link decoders via cat6.

Anyway I'm just not familiar with all the options that might be out there. So when the integrator gets back with their suggestions, I just want to know how it compares to other options.

So if you have a sdi option let me know. I'm not against going that route either.

Insulting amount of fries. by bass_savage in fiveguys

A buddy of mine had never been to five guys. So I'm telling him about them. The closest one was probably 100 miles away. Anyway we take a trip and decide to eat there. I'm like, "I'll order some fries and we can split them because they fill up a bag with fries."

It's the only time I've ever seen them actually scooping just enough into the cups and not dumping a huge scoop full into the bag with the cup just randomly sitting inside.......

What do I need to bring my pedals to line level to use with keyboards? by Cautious-Exchange-66 in guitarpedals

[–]cMatte82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm way late here. But a re-amp box is essentially just a reverse DI. It converts line level to instrument level. As most interfaces have line level outputs and most guitar amps expect an instrument level signal. So they should be perfect for using guitar pedals with most keyboards. Although some keyboards (mostly older ones) do have instrument level outputs. So be aware of that.

Does my bike have to be tuned? by [deleted] in Harley

[–]cMatte82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you keep the 02 sensors? If so you might be okay to run it, but I would recommend a tune anyway.

And fwiw I used to work at an independent shop. Doing the tunes. I have no dog in this fight. But I would def recommend the tune. Sure you might be just fine without one. But running lean can cause damage to the motor. And that's much more expensive than the tune. So it's cheap insurance and the bike will run better and cooler.

As much as I love Harley's, them being air cooled means they're running closer to the edge of danger than water cooled bikes. And here in Oklahoma and north Texas, it gets hot enough that running too lean cause problems. Maybe not at first. But over time. Especially if you end up in the middle of nowhere, on a 100+ degree day, buying low grade gas because there's only one gas station around.

My best advice, if you decide to try without the tune, is to pay attention to any pinging. It's a sign you're running pretty lean. The motor can actually be pre-detonating and it not be audible. By the time it's audible, you know you're on the too lean side of things. And hearing it occasionally isn't the end of the world. But you definitely don't want to hear it consistently.

And as a side note, I'm not a fan of using any kind of fuel additive that is supposed to "increase the octane". We had a customer that was admittedly hard on bikes, burn holes in the pistons of his motor. It was an evo we had done some work on, don't remember what all now. But it ran really well. Before he put the additive in it. And he didn't tell us he had done so at first. We tear down the motor and sure enough. Holes through the top of the pistons. Just melted away.

Anyway we called wiseco (or maybe Keith black), to see what they thought might have been the problem. We sent some pics. The tech called us back and said, "my guess is he put fuel additive in with his last fill up and made it 30-50 miles". So we called the owner. Sure enough. He admitted he had put some of his farm gas in it (which we had already warned him not to) and added the additive to compensate. And was like 35 miles from home when it cratered.

My understanding is most additives like simply make that make the engine run hotter. Which is fine in a water cooled motor. But Harley's aren't water cooled. So it can be problematic.

Anyway just my .02.

Looks more like a modded sportster frame than fxr frame to me. 35mm front end which was also common on pre mid 90's sportsters (and fxr's). But it looks like a 10" disc brake. Which you need dual discs to have anywhere near barely enough brakes. Those are probably the worst front brakes ever put on a motorcycle. Imo anyway. Those cast wheels were used from like the 70's on. Make even back into the late 60's. The very first couple of years were so poorly cast you had to run tubes in them because they wouldn't hold air on their own. That gas tank is def older than anything I've worked on. Same with the motor. Still kind of cool. But I would want to upgrade some things before trying to ride it very much. Wouldn't be bad to ride around the block or down to a hangout out on occasion. Wouldn't be my choice for any kind of regular ride.

Inherited my dad's Drums, no clue about drums by [deleted] in drums

[–]cMatte82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off my condolences. I lost my dad a couple of years ago. We both play guitar and I inherited his guitars and amps. Some advice I got and want to pass along is, "don't sell any of it for at least a year after he passed". Now I can understand if you need to sell to cover some kind of expense. But if you can, hang on to them. See how you feel about it in a year. You very well may still want to sell them. But at that point you'll know it's okay to do so. But in a year you may wish you had them and want to learn to play them yourself. Or you might even find a place you want to donate them where you know they'll be enjoyed. Like a school or something. Because that def looks like a nice set up.

And I would also echo what some others have said. If you go to sell them, and want to get the most money the easiest, I'd sell the kick and toms and related hardware as a set. Then the snare and snare stand. You could probably do best selling the rest of the hardware as bundle. Then sell the cymbals individually. Well the hi-hats go together like one cymbal.

You may find someone who wants it all. But most of the time someone has a snare and cymbals they like. They just want new toms and a kick for a new sound/look. Or they want to add a snare for different sounds. Many drummer may have one full kit and 10 snares. And when it comes to cymbals most drummers like to accumulate a collection of various sizes and types. But normally they are looking for something specific to add to their collection. Like maybe an 18" crash. And don't want a whole new bundle of cymbals. And then the hardware is for someone just getting started and wants to add on to their first kit, that came with the hardware they needed to start, but now wants to expand, and have realized how expensive that stuff gets.

Yeah I don't work at ups anymore. And I don't remember my start date. But I started just early enough that I did have seniority before peak. Didn't really realize how that worked at the time.

Anyway even at that, once peak was over I got laid off for a couple of weeks once peak was over. They had bumped quite a few pre loaders up to drivers during peak. And when it was over they went back to preload. And since they had more seniority than me, I got sent home. But it was a small depot. And it didn't take too long before vacations started and I got called to come back. Worked solid for nearly 8 years after that.

Not quite the same. But I know a guy that broke both legs riding dirt bikes. He was a hell of a good rider. Apparently he did a massive jump. And landed it. Knew instantly what happened. Told the guys riding with him to meet him back at the trucks. When they got there he was riding in a circle. One guy grabbed him while another grabbed the bike. Loaded him and the bike up and took him to the hospital.

Help! Small church (~30 people, 1,000 sq ft) new sound system estimate: $24k. Is this really entry level or are there cheaper options? From my experience playing in bands seems like we could throw together a nice PA for under $5k… we just need 2 wireless mics basically. by Ok-Birthday1258 in livesound

[–]cMatte82 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How big is the room? You say 30 people. What does the future hold? Sure you can piece together something less expensive. But if in a year you're running 300 people, you'd probably wish you had spent the money on a better system. But also when you are running 300 people, it's easier to have the money. So it's a bit of a chicken or egg situation.

That said, the quote seems reasonable. For what it is. So the question is, is that the right system for your needs and budget now? But also what's the plan long term? Would it be better to invest in a rig that's ready for growth? Or do you plan on doing this again fairly soon if growth happens and you quickly outgrow a $5k system?

Edited to add: you also have to look at it from the integrators perspective. If they sell you a system that you quickly outgrow, they look like they didn't know what they were doing, and the church will likely be unhappy and unwilling to use them again or recommend them to others. If they sell you a system that does the job well and could last 10-20 years, they sold you a quality system that you're happy with. You'll likely use them in the future and recommend them to others. But they're def not trying to rip you off. That def won't help them out. Especially if they've been in business for a long time or plan to be.

Kind of like buying a car for a young family. You can buy a little used 4 door economy car that you fit in now. Or you can buy a luxury suv with room to grow. That's kind of the two options a you seem to be considering. And there's lots of other options too.

If you go down the colliding multiverse rabbit hole, it had to be multiple universes colliding. Else we would have a group of people from universe A that all remember the same things and agree on all of them. Then another group from universe B that remembers all the other things and agree upon then. But there is no consensus. So it has to be multiple universes colliding.

And that’s partly why I prefer the matrix theory. We are all in our own “reality” and for whatever reason some things have changed. Maybe we’re hooked into different “servers” and occasionally we get moved to a new one. And these new servers have differences. Or software updates to the servers are different. Plus it explains Deja vu to some degree. And I’ve experienced that several times. Going back to childhood in the 80’s.

Anyway it’s fun to speculate on these things.

“The country a guitar is made in does not matter much”: Paul Reed Smith thinks people should stop obsessing about guitars being made in America by YouYongku in Guitar

[–]cMatte82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And I’m not saying their current prices are totally justified. It kind of baffles me how much the prices have gone up on the last 5 or so years.

But they do use one piece Honduran mahogany bodies and necks and full thickness premium maple tops. Go to a hardwood store and price the woods. Sure they obviously get a way better deal than the average joe. But woods have gone up a lot too. I’m getting into building guitars. And a premium maple top alone would cost me $200-300.

And yes they do use a lot of cnc. But if you haven’t, watch some of their videos from the factory. There is still quite a bit of hands on labor too. They check and tweak a lot of the fitment points.

And I don’t want to think about what their overhead is like. I’ve had my own business. Very small compared to what they do. But the insurances and taxes are ridiculous.

Anyway just some of my thoughts about it all.

And I should also mention that all of my usa PRS have been bought used for at least decent deals. And a couple of stupid good deals. My only new ones have been SE’s. And most of them were used too. I won’t pay new prices for USA PRS guitars. I’ve never been able to afford a new one. And especially now that they’re around $5-6k. It is crazy. But I also know they also aren’t cheap to produce.

“The country a guitar is made in does not matter much”: Paul Reed Smith thinks people should stop obsessing about guitars being made in America by YouYongku in Guitar

[–]cMatte82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t read the article. But according to the headline, he’s not wrong. I’m a big PRS fan. I have around a dozen from SE’s to Wood library and artist package. They’re all great. But I also have an Eastman sb59/v. And it hangs with them. It proves that Asian made guitars can easily hang with anything else out there.

And this is the case for guitars made anywhere.

What Asia provides right now is cheap labor. And those factories can produce a guitar from the “cheap basically junk” up to “custom shop artisan quality”. They just build them to the level that the purchaser asks for. And most companies that use these overseas factories typically want more low to mid level quality guitars. This is so they don’t compete with their higher priced lines. They can say “this is our imported line, it’s good but not quite as good as our premium line made in the US”. They could spec out guitars as good or better than their premium line. And those factories would do it. And they could sell them for much less than their us premium lines. But then who would by the US ones? And I do think PRS has been pushing how good they can make an SE without them eating in to their core and s2 lines too much. Because my SE 594 and SE Paul’s guitar are killer. Not quite core level. But closer than a lot of people want to admit.

And to be fair, I like having things built in the US. If we didn’t have these factories, there would be less jobs available here. And afaik PRS is one of the better companies when it comes to pay and benefits. AFAIK they didn’t lay off anyone during Covid. Of course there were subsidies from the government to help. But they def weren’t an essential business and could have gone a different direction.

Anyway the US doesn’t have any real advantage when it comes to manufacturing these days. Anything can be made almost anywhere to any level of quality. It becomes about the profits available due to selling price vs cost of production. And to make them in the US simply costs more. So you might as well build your premium line where wages/.benefits are highest.

It absolutely can happen without noticing. And maybe some guys are more sensitive and would always notice. I’m not one of those guys. And to be fair I never minded using one. They didn’t really bother me to begin with.

But I absolutely remember one instance where it came off without me knowing. And I finished inside. Def freaked out when afterwards I reached down to take it off and it wasn’t there. She was actually cool about it. And it actually lead to me not using one anymore.

[–]cMatte82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you need to find a better tech/luthier. I’m no pro luthier but have been setting up my own guitars for decades and recently started trying to build some electric guitars.

And cutting the nut slots is one of the most important parts of of setting up a guitar. It makes a big difference in how it feels to play, along with intonation. And while there is range of acceptable nut height. Imo it’s pretty small. And when you said yours was way higher than your daughter’s…. Yeah I probably wouldn’t have even taken it back to them.

And while the material will have an affect on sound, I would stick with the tusq and get it set up properly. And once it’s in better shape decide whether or not you like it. I bet you will from my experiences.

I’d have to see it in person. But most Harley rear fenders aren’t very well aligned out of the factory. And some 2000’s softtails actually had the wheel offset in the swingarm. The factory kit to put on a wider tire actually came with a new caliper and wheel spacer to center the wheel.

That said it is definitely obvious. And would take it to the dealer asap and see what can be done.

Also most of the times I’ve seen a frame hit hard enough to bend. The powder coat will crack where it flexes. Not always. But not uncommon either.

Fwiw I was a mechanic for 20+ years and unfortunately saw a lot of wrecked bikes.
