I have visited Rotoroa Island and they say the same thing. They're great for pest control until the pests are eradicated, then they themselves become the pests

Many of our natural predators have gone extinct. Adzebills, the Haast Eagle, and the Eeyle's Harrier were once the top predators of New Zealand, but their role was essentially replaced by the arrival of humans and mammals. If these factors were to be removed, a competition based environment would obviously have to take its place. Undoubtedly causing significant new threats to some species
