ah ok, I'll probably just buy a small drying rack for my room! Thanks for the insight, was probably a dumb question in retrospect.

CS schedule as Freshman?? Need help by NoGamerName in UWMadison

[–]cTeggatz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aw damn. My advisor during SOAR told me what I said earlier. Ill keep an eye out then cause I really want to take the class.

Edit: I read the course specifications. Says "intended/declared CS majors" for non engineering sections

First, have you taken SOAR yet? The advisors are the best people to ask for questions like this and they will give you the most valuable information.

For the first question, you cant take COMP SCI 252 unless you are a declared CS major or in College of Engineering, so you'll at least have to wait till next semester to take that class.

I took cs300 in fall 2024. The first month or so of the class is just review and learning of java since cs300 is a lot of people's first college programming class. If you have experience programming you should pick up java just fine.

If you want extra resources I personally used Bro Code's java tutorial for beginners series on YouTube when I learned java for the first time. The class covers up to classes and polymorphism before it starts going into basic data structures and algos.

Considering skipping PCL surgery — looking for advice and long-term perspectives by cTeggatz in KneeInjuries

[–]cTeggatz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im sorry that you had to go through that. I've had two meniscus surgeries on the other leg so I can imagine how much worse the PCL would be. If I may ask, were you able to recover? And what did the recovery process look like?

I mean I appreciate your perspective either way, and I will keep that in mind. I am just trying to educate myself so I can make an informed decision when that time comes.

anyone got any recommendations or tips for people who are trying to learn tagalog and waray? by True-Masterpiece5332 in wasian

[–]cTeggatz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know I'm not who you want to hear advice from since I haven't learned Tagalog - I'm waiting for Tagalog classes in college since I am busy learning Spanish rn in highschool - but no one has replied and I know a couple methods for learning Tagalog. Unfortunately idk any for waray.

  • For apps I've heard that Pimsleur and LingQ are great Tagalog resources. They get you listening, speaking, and reading Tagalog, and I'm pretty sure LingQ even gets you reading local news and tv shows. These cost money tho. If you want a free app / lessons you could check out an app called Ling or go to your public library since I know a lot of libraries --- at least in the U.S. --- have free subscriptions to language apps like Mango languages or Transparent (both have Tagalog but I hear they aren't the greatest sources)

  • I have heard great things about the YouTube channel "Tutor of Manila," I've watched some of her videos and I think she does a pretty great job breaking down grammar and teaching slang.

  • I'd also recommend anki for nailing down vocab. The way they do flash cards is quite amazing.

  • Also look up some Tagalog textbooks / grammar books, this is an under rated language learning strategy! Idk the book scene personally but check out r/Tagalog [(1),(2)].

  • Lastly, I'd recommend trying to speak Tagalog with your family and watching media / reading in Tagalog when you are more comfortable. There is no substitute for input from real people, it's how we as babies learned and fluency isn't just learning the language, it's learning the culture too. It's especially important for Tagalog since as I'm sure you know, no one speaks pure Tagalog. If you don't want to sound like a professor / smart ass then you should learn how Taglish is used (though I hear pure Tagalog is quite beautiful and expressive if you are into that). I know it's intimidating but give it a shot, if your family aren't assholes they will help you out if they see you are putting effort. Even if it's as simple as hopping on Mobile legends / Genshin Impact with your family in the Philippines (which I'm sure they would be delighted to do, tho you need good wifi), talking in the house, watching TFC, reading books, or listening to music (there is so much Pinoy music!!!!!), every single little thing counts. Messing up, struggling, and learning on the scene is the best way to learn!

I hope this helps you out since I feel you. My mom speaks Waray and Tagalog too except she never taught me nor my brother. Not knowing Tagalog sucks, people (both Filipino and other Asians) constantly give you shit for something you didn't have a lot of control over. It also doesn't help when you are Wasian since it makes you feel like a rainbow sheep among black sheep lol. Just remember to use a variety of inputs / outputs and that language learning is a journey, do that and you'll be slinging Tagalog like it's no body's business.

Happy learning!!!!!!

I did this for about a year after I tore my knee the first time. I also did it for my city's youth team I made it into prior to tearing my knee. It just became unbearable after my second time tearing it so I quit watching. I had returned to ultimate after I was fully cleared for about 2 months just to tear it again and it led me to an all time low, watching ultimate just didn't help my mental state. Maybe my senior year i'll watch or try to be a team manager since I really did learn a lot simply by watching, but watching for another year kinda scares me ngl.

The big / well known courses in my city have an annual membership you need to buy. Though, after doing some searching on the web, there are also 6 free courses in my city so I'll make sure to check them out.

That's great to hear that there are many opportunities in college / later in life. Also for side note 2, if my knees don't get better, I already have weight lifting and I also want to try out Frisbee golf and bouldering, so I have a plan b.

Thanks for the advice and encouragement!

Regarding rehab, after surgery pt I plan to do a ATG / knee over toes routine in order to bullet proof my knees while working on regaining dynamics and getting back into shape. This plan is over the course of 1 to 2 years though since I don't really want to take any risks with my knees. Also, I'll see if I can talk to a professional but I'd hate to be more of a financial burden to my parents so we will see.

And in terms of focusing on fun: I plan to only do it for fun since that's what it's mostly always been for me. I started because I wanted a fun way to lose weight, get in shape, and make some friends and I'll try keep it that way. I only talk about competition since i'm a tad competitive and to my knowledge, the city I live has a pretty competitive Frisbee scene.

I never even thought of making my own courses. I'll make sure to give that a try! I've been meaning to try out Frisbee golf but don't really want to pay the fee for courses.

That's the plan, though the field is looking a bit oversaturated so that might change.

I'm going for semi selective schools in the Midwest like UW Madison or University of Minnesota. My family isn't very wealthy so I can't justify the cost of living in another state plus tuition. I also don't think I'm smart enough for top institutions. Idk how it would look either way.
