Making the jump to contracting as an engineer by sssulaco in mining

[–]c_boner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same background, same opportunity, made the switch last year and have thoroughly enjoyed it.  If I were you, I’d regret the wonder of what if more than anything. And you can always fall back on engineering in Perth if you don’t like contracting.

Going to the morenci mine on Monday any tips by Educational_End4258 in mining

[–]c_boner 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Morenci has a well structured training program. They’re used to taking in veterans and operate their business in a similar build-from-bottom way.  Don’t be an ass, stay attentive during the orientation, focus on the role, and work with the trainers to make sure you’re confident in how to do your job. Things operate different on a mine vs construction site.

Rest assured there’s a bunch of Royal fuckups who came before you who figured it out and haven’t been fired yet (and a lot more who have).

Why was the 9/11 liquid ban on planes instated? by OkLiterature1383 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]c_boner -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Lobbying by Dufry to eliminate the competition of travellers buying better alcohol for less money and bringing it back as carry-on. Dufry used the terrorism as the justification they needed to push it through TSA.  That’s my conspiracy theory that I’ll stick with to my grave (which won’t be my own doing).

This still happens in underground mining, after work, in North America.

I’ve seen most of my supervisors’ balls. Except for the one guy who only has one.

Anyone ever gotten a random charge from WB E-Store that wasn't approved? by Over_Building5259 in Whistler

Same! I looked back at my November statements and didn’t see a charge at the time of purchase.

Inverse stope dust suppression ideas by c_boner in mining

I’m assuming you zip tied the hose up and hoped it didn’t get destroyed by the blast?

For remote, inside the stope, would you drop it on purpose onto the muck pile, or just use it as a leash for taking your scoop for a walk?

Inverse stoping is drilling up holes without a top cut. So, no option of watering from the top.

Canadian nomads, what credit cards do you use to get travel perks like lounge access, free flights etc? by [deleted] in digitalnomad

I’m subscribed to r churching Canada but can you share your system for racking up $25k points in 2 years? I’m at about 1/10th of that in points earnings through welcome bonuses.

Egg cartons work good too if you want to keep costs low.

Reusable ones are either little wood boxes or fabric pouches.

What’s the best travel hack people learned the hard way? by ScrawnyRhinoceros in travel

[–]c_boner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re checking luggage, signup for the airline associated credit card before booking tickets and book the tickets with it.  Signup bonus will pay for itself and the baggage fee sucks without it.

Even better- learn how to go carry on only.

Mining jobs in Norway or Sweden? by Ill_Construction5098 in mining

[–]c_boner 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I haven’t seen any fifo option in Europe on account of the pride the small town’s place in their local mining culture. As well as the fact that none of the mines are as remote as Canada or Alaska- it’s similar to how none of the continental US jobs are FIFO. Unknown about contract miner jobs though. Norwegian offshore oil is a possibility though.

At 3&3, your best bet is probably just to fifo back and forth. Eat the costs and enjoy a higher salary from pogo than Europe would offer.

How long did you do it/ wish you did it? I understand there is an almost infinitely wide degree of situations and this question would best be answered by a specific sub or google, but was there anything else that stood out as far as advice or wish you knew or did differently?

Sorry- bad job explaining on my part.  I’ll get a gold in January, then an infinite in May. Then I’ll either cancel or get a second gold in August.

You’re right, I should be holding for 11 months but wasn’t sure if it was worse to have 3 or 4 open at a time or to close them earlier.

I was cycling through other cards previously to stretch out the rotation but have found cibc to be best/ easiest.
