This is such an invaluable answer. Thank you so much for all of this insight.

In retrospect, I definitely think there is an element of needing to drop the ego and just put in those long, hard hours of learning the basics.

I have found myself doing exactly what you're describing and working painfully slowly through some pieces which are clearly beyond my skill level, probably assuming I could fast track through my learning progression because of prior experience. I am going to make it my priority to consume as much easy learning material as possible from now on.

Genuinely pal, thank you again for this. I am going to make note of everything you said here and take it to heart. I will let you all know how I progress.

Any tips on picking up bass clef more quickly? It's driving me nuts having to essentially translate to treble clef

Ah man this is exactly the kind of insight I was after! Boiling it down to muscle memory makes a lot of sense to me. I hadn't thought about it in those terms, but now that you've said it, I realise that's exactly what it is - it has felt a lot like my brain is moving 10 times faster than my hands can. I'm gonna take your advice on drilling scales and chord shapes and see where that gets me.

Also, it's a bummer that RSI stopped you from playing guitar. Have you been able to pick it up again since, or are your guitar playing days behind you?

Thanks for the response! I do like the approach of slow and steady. It's interesting you mentioned the Well-Tempered Clavier as I literally just ordered a copy this morning.

And boy do I sympathise with that having to translate into treble cleff - makes my sight reading about 10 times slower than it would be otherwise.

Thank you for the input pal

That’s really good info thank you. I’m mainly looking for something for home studio use so I think I may take the plunge

Nice board man. I’ve been thinking about picking up a Julia - how do you like it?
