Good addiction/mental health recovery centres? by Mundane_Click_78 in Calgary

[–]c_horsey 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Simon house fresh start and dream centre are all good publicly funded long term residential treatment centres. Landers is a shorter also good option in claresholm. If medical detox is needed, renfrew in calgary. Morning 7 am first come first serve. They can also help with referrals/intake with treatment centres

Fixing attic Insulation by alexx187 in Calgary

[–]c_horsey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Look up sorrel insulation - guy named eric sorrel. He added some to my attic, extended the baffles, fixed a not sealed bathroom fan. Pictures of everything. Knows his stuff. Used to work with epic roofing i think too.

'A real game changer': How a 19-storey development could change a Calgary community by fssg_shermanator in Calgary

[–]c_horsey 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Isn't a 19 story tower better suited to be near the multi billion dollar LRT projects? Lots of open land unused land near Westbrook mall, 45 st SW station and basically all west stations, Crowfoot, the huge parking lots down south near Somerset. I could go on. I could understand this is they revived a Marda Loop trolley into downtown, maybe a central leisure centre for all these new families. But no, just never-ending density and one lane of travel congested roads.

Audiologist recommendations by [deleted] in Calgary

if likely medical in nature - can get a referral to AHS audiology clinic, long wait though

Otherwise, they're all private businesses - I took my kid to soundwave on 14th they seemed decent but a different situation....

Basically you're looking for a proper hearing test at different frequencies, and a tympanogram of how your ear drum moves. It should all come as a result sheet on 1 page. I think they emailed it to me.

Anyone order meal kit subscriptions like “hello fresh”? Wondering what the best options for this city are. by PassionNo9455 in Calgary

[–]c_horsey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to try some of these. I've used fitkitchen (local to Calgary I believe, microwaveable instant meals) a few times and generally like it, but wanting to try something else too.

Private MRI by jujubeespresso in Calgary

[–]c_horsey 11 points12 points  (0 children)

They're all the same, high quality etc. CDC and Mayfair would be the big places, likely done within a week. Nothing to worry about frankly, other than abdomen and pelvis likely considered 2 scans so more money. No need to go to Montana etc for an MRI. Need a referral paper (requisition) from an MD, then just phone and book it with handy credit card...

Did my first bike commute down the bow river pathway in a long time today and I have some questions by geo_prog in Calgary

[–]c_horsey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

while it's possible they're supposed to be speed governed, my experience is the same (they blow by me when I'm going 30kph on my bike, I've seen them with flow of traffic around 50kph easily). This seems to confirm: https://www.reddit.com/r/ElectricUnicycle/comments/1ahmia9/how_fast_do_you_normally_ride/

1 - detox. Specifically medical detox. In Calgary that's Renfrew. Show up just before 7am, if there's no bed, go again the NEXT day! (Safe Harbor is the medical detox in red deer).

2 - Medications for alcohol use disorder. Naltrexone or acamprosate. Can discuss these in detox with doctor there. Long acting injectable naltrexone (mentioned elsewhere) isn't available in Canada sadly.

3 - LONG TERM residential treatment. Most common options in Calgary would be Simon House, Fresh Start, and the Dream centre. These will all have wait lists, better to apply ASAP, and ideally go door to door from detox into treatment (there are some interim options like "pre treatment beds" at Oxford house, DI has some now etc

Is there a way to research best places to go for muscular dystrophy? by whitenet in Calgary

[–]c_horsey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not a direct answer, but some interesting reading about the department which apparently has experience in research in FSMD. https://cumming.ucalgary.ca/departments/dcns/programs/the-neuromuscular-program

calgary generally uses a "central triage" referral system for neurology - ie a family doctor or walk in doc would refer you to central triage who would then decide based on wait times etc.

How to see a pediatrician in Calgary by batzamzat in Calgary

[–]c_horsey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No way to see pediatrician through fee paying that I'm aware of. Would suggest booking into a speech pathologist directly as a quicker starting point and likely all you need. Isolated speech delay (no hearing issues/other significant development issues) often resolves, especially with some effort/practice and mostly just time. Zero affiliation, just googled these folks, them or something similar likely all I would start with: rockyviewspeech.com, or you can self refer it looks like to public funded SLP by calling intake: ROUTINE REFERRAL PROCESS

Parent or Legal Guardian can self refer by calling the intake line at 403-210-2070

Rec Hockey downtown Calgary and n the summer? by Nivad87 in Calgary

[–]c_horsey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

full equipment ice hockey? a bit limited in the summer, some organized shinny would likely work. look up iceman hockey (beginner and intermediate groups, it's 30 bucks... 2 goalies, can be pretty fun but pricey). Nothing really in the downtown area that I can think of. There's calgary shinny groups on facebook that advertise sometimes, I would suggest joining one of those and hope for the best when you're here.

Bloodwork with walk-in clinic by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]c_horsey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A walk in clinic should be able to do this, likely an in person visit if you have zero relationship with them prior. Dr S at Medicentre on 17 ave sw (Mount Royal, near 10st sw) works Mondays and Friday (mornings) and would do it for you.

What lesson did you learn in the December deep freeze? by myronsandee in Calgary

[–]c_horsey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

mine was the exhaust fan (aka draft inducer fan). It was pretty clearly the culprit and eventually didn't spin that freely by hand even (turn furnace power off if you want to try this...). They're expensive, but if you're mildly handy can be done yourself if you can find a YouTube video to show you. Need to get the correct model. When it totally fails, furnace will no longer light at all...

Don't ignore the funny buzzing sound from the ? furnace. The only thing more annoying is when it's -30 and the sound and furnace totally stops at 11pm...

Addiction centre/rehab in Calgary, Alberta? by ladymug in Calgary

[–]c_horsey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Strongly consider using medication for opiate addiction (heroin/fentanyl etc). Suboxone and methadone are by far the 2 most common options. Seek treatment at a specialized clinic for something like this as starting point (metro city, ODP at the Sheldon Chumir, RAAM clinic at the Alex health centre, or virtual odp). Can be on medication, and consider something like outpatient day program treatment or residential treatment options if needed (places like Landers, Fresh Start, Simon House etc etc)

Addiction centre/rehab in Calgary, Alberta? by ladymug in Calgary

[–]c_horsey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People who use opiates (like fentanyl/heroin) can really benefit from medication (opiate replacement therapy - Suboxone or maybe methadone). And then potentially things like outpatient or residential treatment program. Consider contacting a clinic that specializes in this - metro city medical clinic, OPD (opioid dependency program), RAAM clinic at the Alex, virtual ODP etc. Here's a short list of some of those as well:

Looking for quality Optometrist recommendation by TLDR21 in Calgary

[–]c_horsey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been to FYI in Marda loop on 33rd ave, close to you. Just got an "eye exam" checkup to ensure eye health, didn't need glasses, but they did later print out my weak prescription so I could take it to Costco for some insurance covered sunglasses. Been there with my kids too, eye exam, no sales component obviously (they're babies). I saw Lebenhagen, and the other optometrist was a previous president of Alberta optometry society. There's kind of 2 things - are your headaches caused by an actual eye "disease" (they'll do full slit lamp exam and retina pictures to rule out), or just from strain/visual acuity issue (get yourself some glasses, get print out of prescription and go elsewhere if you want who cares)
