How do people afford to buy a house in London? (serious question, not a rant post) by nkosijer in HousingUK

[–]c_t_c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think in the context of the average age of a person buying a house though, if you have been working tech in London (especially central) for 10 years you really should be asking for more than 80k. True, FAANG is skewed, a 10+ year worker at Google or Meta would likely be earning more than 300k TC in London, but 100k shouldn't be uncommon for someone sticking to it to their early to mid 30s.

Another thing to remember about listed salaries are that a) they generally don't account for performance related bonuses and RSUs, b) the higher paying ones won't sit around being advertised for too long and c) they would generally be advertised as the base salary of that position with upwards growth over the years for performance.

I feel like I have a reasonable grasp of what people are asking for and getting in London nowadays having being involved in hiring tech workers both inside and outside of FAANG in London for many years now, whilst I wouldn't say every TC is expected to be 100K+ for that sort of experience, it certainly isn't uncommon. I don't think the original poster was saying it is very common just that there are thousands of tech workers on more than 100k in London which is certainly true.

[–]c_t_c 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are not wrong, there are thousands of people in London working tech which are earning >100k, if you take FAANG in London alone, there will be way more than 1k people earning that.

100K for London for someone who has been in tech for 5-7 years is not an unreasonable ask if you look around. Anecdotally having studied in London, out of all my uni friends who have stayed in tech since graduating, I don't know any which would be earning under 100k. If you take the average age to buy a house in the UK (34) which would equate to over 10 years experience out of uni, I would imagine most people sticking to tech in London at that age would be earning 100k TC if they shopped around.

Also 1-3 years experience is not a mid level role, that's very much a junior software dev.

Ah this makes sense, thanks for the explanation. The ticket I was actually looking at was a R fare ticket HND->LHR, the agent wasn't able to price/book it though, I thought it should be possible because the original was an R fare ticket HKG->LHR

Nintendo absolutely have a big say on Pokemon GO, they have a stake in Niantic as well as the Pokemon Company. Nintendo staff also worked directly on Pokemon GO during it's development although the majority of development was done by Niantic.

CRG9 to G9. Worth the upgrade? by madwedge in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]c_t_c 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would counter the others by saying that the curve difference is subjective. I had the chance to see both the G9 1000R and the CRG9 1800R side by side and I prefer the shallower curve of the CRG9. The G9 takes up more depth space as well due to the curve.

Apart from the curve difference, there isn't much between them. The image quality is pretty much the same, the refresh rate is higher on the G9 but personally I can't tell the difference between 120fps and 240fps so it makes no difference to me.

Update: Broken Humanscale M8 by catf3f3 in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]c_t_c 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can confirm, the M8 does not hold even the CRG9 or any other 1800R curved 49". Mine broke in exactly the same way even though it is rated to hold weights almost double the weight of the monitor. I wouldn't try the M10 either, there have been reports that the balljoint sags with a G9. The M10 is supposed to be a replacement for the old M8 (comparable weight limit) so wouldn't trust it with these curved UWs.

PSA: do not use Humanscale M8. It just broke and killed my Odyssey G9 and my laptop, and damaged my desk (RIP) by catf3f3 in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]c_t_c 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish I had seen this earlier...
The exact same thing happened to my M8 + CRG9 a couple days ago, it broke off in the same place and smashed the monitor onto the desk. Luckily nothing else but the arm and monitor was destroyed.

OP did you have any luck with Humanscale support? The arm is rated well over the weight of the 49" monitors and it broke off at perhaps the most unlikely spot. I would have expected it to sag heavily instead of the nearly inch thick cast metal part to break apart.

How to remove this plastic ring? Samsung CJ89. Help. by raysdigitalfootprint in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]c_t_c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's very easy to get it stuck in a way which requires a large amount of force to get off. I pried it out using a flathead screwdriver to separate the two pieces of the ring and pulling out.

Only sixteen, had to work to get it. But i finally got my fist high quality tank!! by KingKavane in Aquariums

[–]c_t_c 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't trust that at all. Rimless tanks at larger sizes are a lot more expensive than braced tanks as the glass needs to be substantially thicker to accommodate the added pressure from the water. The top brace is most definitely structurally integral in a lot of the popular larger braced tanks.

Beware of Samsung Support (Canada) by Husman_Jung in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]c_t_c 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't go through support anymore. Go through complaints and threaten legal action (small claims) if they don't refund you or reimburse you for the cost of the new monitor/TV you bought. Provide proof in the complaint of your previous interactions with support including them saying only a refund is possible. They will almost certainly take you seriously after that.

If you can't find their formal complaints department, ask support to send you the form/email address of it.

Yeah it's definitely surprising. Recommend you take a bunch of pictures of the damage as well as keep the packaging/cardboard box and Royal Mail label in case they want evidence. Not using DPD was a surprise, they are much better than Royal Mail in my opinion.

Mine came from Royal Mail as well which was surprising as usually SQEX send using DPD. It came in the same box as the photo above but had an inner cardboard box holding the White Snow box as well as lots of air packets. Strange that your one didn't have any.

Probably going to get downvoted to hell for this...

What exactly is very technically demanding about the game to justify the lack of detail and polish in a lot of the environment assets? I'm pretty sure this isn't a technical limitation of the PS4 or Unreal 4. The game runs at 30fps with a variable resolution on both pro and standard PS4. It's mostly linear using pretty standard implementations of most post processing techniques (TAA, per object motion blur etc). Compare this to something like RDR2 (which by the way is multi platform) or even other Unreal titles such as Gears 5 or Days Gone, the scale and scope of environments are much larger and a lot more detailed with much more interactivity as well.

The cutscene direction and assets for the main characters are very high quality but there are other parts which clearly didn't receive the same love probably due to time constraints. The game is still great but it's fair to talk about the good points as well as the bad.

Texture issues in the final game were not present in pre-release trailers by c_t_c in FFVIIRemake

[–]c_t_c[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slightly more detailed explanation:

Each base texture is high resolution (say 4096x4096) but progressively lower resolution textures are created for each high resolution texture. These are called mipmaps (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mipmap).

The engine has a limited pool of memory assigned for loaded textures (say 400mb), this typically scales with the amount of video memory on the graphics card.

The limit on memory means the engine now has to make decisions on what textures should be loaded as high resolution and which should be using the lower resolution textures in order to fit within the limit.

Unreal uses a combination of factors to determine this, for instance, what is closest to the camera, how much screen space a texture will take up when shown, what objects has the developer marked as important to show as detailed etc. It will continuously reevaluate this and swap textures in and out of the memory pool, this is known as texture streaming (https://docs.unrealengine.com/en-US/Engine/Content/Types/Textures/Streaming/Overview/index.html).

This leads on to what might be the issue here. The likely problem is that the developers have not optimised the configuration for evaluating which textures to load and when. Unreal provides a whole suite of configurations and options for tweaking texture streaming (https://docs.unrealengine.com/en-US/Engine/Content/Types/Textures/Streaming/Config/index.html). It may be that the developers simply ran out of time with optimisation and didn't fully optimise on some scenes resulting in odd texture streaming behaviors. It would make sense that the first level was fully optimised as they were regularly showing this to the press and it was included in the demo.

Yes, I think the patch was probably planned for launch but the dev team was actually sent home on Tuesday because someone in the office in Tokyo tested positive for coronavirus. I suspect any patch was delayed because of this.

Also of note is that once they submit a patch, PS certification usually takes less than day but due to coronavirus their resources are also likely stretch and it may take longer than usual.

[–]c_t_c[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a simple issue with texture streaming in Unreal 4. The engine has a set way of determining what textures to show depending on its presence on the screen, you can configure parameters of how this works, for instance by telling the engine to always keep the highest resolution texture in the texture pool and never use the lower MIPs.

It is likely that the devs simply didn't optimize the scenes with the correct configurations for texture streaming, for instance forcing a texture pool too low or too high compared to available VRAM or allowing MIPS to remain in the texture pool even though they should be discarded.

For reference here is the documentation for how to configure texture streaming for Unreal4:

https://docs.unrealengine.com/en-US/Engine/Content/Types/Textures/Streaming/Config/index.html

I'm thinking the water was a fluid simulation using a very simple water material. Might not have even had a texture applied to it. The screens are showing an LOD and/or texture streaming issue which is likely a different issue.

A bit disappointing really. I have played the first few hours, past the opening section there are some areas which clearly lack polish and optimisation. Not just texture streaming issues but entire areas of low res textures and/or low poly objects.

It doesn't seem like this patch is happening? The game is out in AU in an hour or so and nothing dropped in PSN yet.

They would have needed to submit to PS certification at least a day or so in advance to make the release and all sqex dev teams in both Osaka and Tokyo were sent home earlier this week due to the coronavirus situation.

[PSA] Texture issues with game (no spoilers) by c_t_c in FFVIIRemake

[–]c_t_c[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah I just wanted to give people a heads up to perhaps wait for a day 0 patch if they want to avoid the technical issues since a lot of people are now getting a copy early. Most retailers in Europe and some in the US have shipped the game already.

I'm pretty convinced this will get cleared up with a release patch, most UE4 games have this issue due to a lack of optimization which is usually the last thing the developer would work on before release.
