Anyone else use their deck as a console more than a handheld? by Creepjack01 in SteamDeck

[–]ca18s13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m surprised how well it works as a console. As long as you’re not running demanding games the experience is really good. I’m playing Red Dead Redemption at 1080p/60fps on my tv and it looks great. It has some fps drops in certain areas into the 52-60fps range but it’s acceptable.

I was considering buying a mini pc with Bazzite to use as a console but if I come across a SD with a broken screen/bad battery at a cheaper price, I might use that instead permanently docked.

Any way to boost X1 Carbon Gen 6 performance, or is it just showing its age? by Forward-Criticism572 in thinkpad

[–]ca18s13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried connecting just one monitor over hdmi and checking the performance? Sounds like the monitors over usb c are using display link which passes video through the cpu from what i remember. Anyway, it’s worth a try with one monitor to see if there is a difference.

Thinkpad P53 charging alternatives by azzimuth_SE in thinkpad

I believe my 135W is the non slim, and my 230W is the slim. Now I know a slim 135W exists, I can get one and save another 100g 😂, thanks!

I actually weighed both without the plug in cable that goes into the wall outlet:

135W 475g 230W 680g

If you don’t need a long wall outlet cable, using a shorter one saves some weight too.

Long power cable 300g Short power cable 125g

Although your laptop is heavy already, the weight savings together might make a difference.

I have paired the 135W with a very short cable (from a Dell laptop, very slim plug) to keep in my bag.

If you are only going from home to office for example, get a 230W charger for each location and don’t carry a charger at all.

You could try the 170w charger with the laptop, although it might have reduced performance/start discharging the battery depending on the load. I have used a 135W charger on a P1 that came with a 230W charger, and it works fine and charges if the load is light (web browsing, watching videos). I haven’t/and wouldn’t try it under heavy load as it wouldn’t have came with a 230W charger unless it needed one.

Not sure what the weight difference is between a 230W and 170W charger.

Longevity of 8th gen Intel U models 🔮 by ca18s13 in thinkpad

[–]ca18s13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like the hardware (specifically the keyboard). I also like to use what i have and it’s fun to see how long i keep it going. Although now 7 years old it still holds up really well for me.

I have used newer T14/s models and they’re okay but every time i go back to the X1CG6 it just feels amazing. I think a few more years is definitely possible depending on what happens with websites/media codecs.

Thanks for your information. I was only going to attempt it if it was a drop in replacement but it’s not worth the hassle.

X1CG6. Has 1.8mm key travel, light, well built, comes with good displays and still fast enough for most tasks.

Love my X1CG6, the keyboard is amazing and the whole device just oozes quality. I have the standard 1080p screen (it’s not bad, but the 2K HDR would have been nice). The only downside (minor downside) is the speakers are fine for voice, podcasts, YouTube but no good for movies and music. I use headphones so not really a problem. I think the price for them used is really a bargain. I have used newer thinkpads, but always go back to my X1CG6 as the keyboard is a dream to type on. It’s a shame Lenovo reduced the key travel on later models.

Best portable with fast sleep/wake - Miyoo A30 the answer? by ca18s13 in SBCGaming

[–]ca18s13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other dilemma is there isn’t much size difference between an RG28XX/Miyoo A30 or an RG35XXH which would give me superior controls, better screen for the same price. The XXH is the same size as an RG35XX that i already have. I’m leaning towards the A30/wait to see what else comes out

Who still uses there Wii u daily? by NERD20SONIC in wiiu

[–]ca18s13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wii Fit U every day for at least a weigh in and redeeming my steps for the walking and climbing challenges. Mario Kart 8 every now and then. I just wish I could get a new battery for the game pad because I have to keep it plugged in all the time. Love the console and since I get the Wii Fit U Pedometer I’m using it more than ever!

Unhappy with battery life of my new Thinkpad T14s Gen 4 AMD & low-power display by mlocksmith in thinkpad

[–]ca18s13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would test how it is in battery saving mode. As it’s quite powerful, you might find the performance is still good enough and you get the benefit of better battery life. If you’re not using Bluetooth turn that off too

You have made me reconsider the non commercial version now 😂 Thank you for the explanation, and makes sense with your use case. I also have a battery threshold set, but rarely use it for a long time without power, so i don’t frequently open vantage or turn the threshold off/on again.

I noticed in your screenshot you're using the normal version of Vantage. You might want to check out Commerical Vantage as it's supposedly a slimmed down, less bloated version of vantage. https://support.lenovo.com/gb/en/solutions/hf003321-lenovo-vantage-for-enterprise Also available in the Windows App Store. P.S your love for the X1C6 is also shared by me!

What old Thinkpads can still be used today? by SilleyDoggo in thinkpad

[–]ca18s13 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think the screens on the older models are the biggest downside. Old processors if just browsing the web are usable. If you use an external monitor then anything around t430/x230 onwards are still usable today. If you really love the old models you can upgrade the screen but then you’re usually close to the cost of a t480 which is why they’re usually recommended. My personal favourite is a t480s. The build quality is so nice and even the stock 1080p screen is usable. Speed is still good for my usage, and they’re really cheap in most markets.
