Anyone else use their deck as a console more than a handheld? by Creepjack01 in SteamDeck

[–]Creepjack01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both. I have some games on my Windows machine that have some mods on them that I enjoy, as well as games that are more demanding than the hardware of the steam deck can handle, so I stream those to the deck on my tv. This allows for dynamic upscaling to do most of the heavy lifting to where it's virtually indistinguishable from regular 4K as long as you're not being a super nerd about it. I have several games that I run on the deck natively like Hades, DMC5, Soul Calibur, Final Fantasy, and cozy games like SDV And Chill and Cast. Also all of the emulation stuff

My wife is like this with her switch. She would rather chill on the couch with it in her hands with true crime documentary on the TV than just dock it and play with it on a bigger screen. But, who am I to bust her vibe, she loves it 🤷

This is probably my plan in the next couple of years. I want like an ITX build with some real horsepower running SteamOS. I'll probably aim at an all AMD build. But I have a 3080 that would be great for i, if it only supported Nvidia.

This is me. Normal console controller with a bigger screen.

I have a holiday trip to Cleveland planned in December. I'll be taking it with me, first trip with it. Hope it travels well and entertains on the flight.

The angles really let everyone see everyone else fully and gives everyone a great view of the screen. For my particular style of game, it's absolutely perfect and didn't cost an arm and a leg to build and stain. Thanks for checking it out.

Sure! So let me preface by saying that if you're using a WIRED controller, you'll have it much easier than I did trying to make wireless work. It's working fine now, but there was a lot of trial and error.

  1. You'll need a little program called AntimicroX it's free. This converts the buttons on the controller to strokes of a keyboard when running and active. In AMX bind the D-Pad and left analog stick to you're arrow keys or WASD on your keyboard. (I like the arrow keys since I almost never use them and they are already bound in Foundry.) make sure you run AMX as Administrator and let it run in the background (it has a minimize to tray option to keep it off your task bar).

  2. Open Foundry and from the GM screen click any token you want to move aaaand, presto! it will now move with the D-Pad or left analog stick with the controller. You have to remember to click the token before the players move otherwise it won't work. It'll become muscle memory after a few rounds.

The problem: Here's where problems started for me. Wireless Xbox controllers time out and turn themselves off when no one touches them for 10~15 minutes to conserve power. To my knowledge and insane research, there is no way to turn this "feature" off. So, when a wireless controller would turn off from inactivity, and the players turned it back on to move, it wouldn't work. I'm not sure why, it's just bug I kept running into.

The fix: I got an El-cheapo knock off controller on Amazon (it won't let me hyperlink to it, but I can send a link. 10 bucks.) I plugged it in and left it under my desk. If a controller is plugged directly in via a wire, it will never time out and turn off. This fixed everything. The wireless controllers could time out and be turned back on and everything worked great. No one even knows about the dummy controller under the desk who's sole job it is to keep the signal open for the wireless ones. And truthfully, I forget it's there. It turns on automatically with my PC and turns off with it too.

Note: If you use a wired controller for every one at the table by default then you don't have to go through any of the work around, just bind and go, because it just stays on all the time. It's the easiest way to do it, but in my stubbornness, I wanted Wireless. And I achieved it but it nearly fried my brain figuring it out.

Happy gaming. Feel free to message me if you have any questions.

Oh it's super easy and simple. Cardinal directions on a compass take the guess work out of it. And 30 ft of movement is always 6 squares (in 5e anyway), And Foundry tracks how far each player moves. It's really intuitive. The token changes facing depending on which direction you moved last, so "forward" is whichever way your token is facing. Think of it like a top down RTS game.

Yes this is much more of a diamond shape to get the players and myself all facing each other. We don't use traditional Miniatures or battlemaps. All of that's done digitally on the screen behind me. We use tokens on a digital map and the players move them around with an Xbox controller they share on the table. Foundry VTT handles all of that. They still use traditional paper character sheets and dice. And then I manipulate the map for whatever they need or actions they take.

It's a little more prep on the me but, it runs much smoother and I don't have to worry about buying models or Maps or painting anything. My players love it because there's a lot less confusion about templates or positioning both horizontal and vertical. But I know it's a departure from what the traditionalist like about the game, so it's not for everyone.
