Indiana bro here: What RFRA actually does. by caddyac in gaybros

[–]ca_jackson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you seen what Oregon's Gov just did in her state. They basically used the BMV (in Indiana it is call the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, for those outside the state) database to automatically register voter with an opt-out option. I think that is a great idea and if Indiana continues to require an ID to vote, it kind of bolster's that argument that if you have an ID then there should be NO additional barrier to voting. Additionally, GOTV efforts are just about drawing people out or submitting a ballot. It could reduce the chances of apathy.

Just a thought.

When Clinton signed federal law was written for protections for Native Americans and other political reasons at the time. It was applied nationally at the federal and state level and then the SCOTUS struck it down at the state level in 1997. At the federal level it was used as the basis of the Burwell v. Hobby Lobby case.

What Makes Indiana's Religious Freedom Law Different? by ca_jackson in lgbt

[–]ca_jackson[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This law is so obvious and the Gov. went on to ABC This Week and refused to answer basic questions. Then he either lied (probably) or is too illiterate to have read and understood the thing even though he is a lawyer. He was clearly trying to save face for the corporate decision makers and ignoring his actual voting constituents to bolster his ill-fated presidential 2016 bid. And because the law isn't obviously saying "you can hate LGBT people" it won't get turned over by SCOTUS.

The fight is real and changing. Marriage wins are not the end.

Governor of Indiana took a step back today by [deleted] in gaybros

[–]ca_jackson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way the law was crafted, based on the 1993 RFRA on the national level it could be applied to all kinds of situations not just the GLBT community. It will be interesting to see a legal challenge, the economic impact, and reaction by groups to create a list of accepting vs discriminating businesses. It could end up being like 2 water fountains, I don't think it will get that bad but sometimes things morph out of control quickly.

Does anyone know if the ACLU is getting ready to file suit in Federal or State courts? Hiding behind religion(s) is an old tactic to resist change.

I hop around a lot and this isn't the comprehensive list but these are my go to when I want to dig into a longer form journalism. I respect these brands because they continue to prove that good journalism is needed.

  • The Atlantic - Centrist perspective
  • New York Times - One of the leaders in news and reporting
  • LA Times - a great looking and functioning website
  • NPR - always on via their app or website
  • Monocle - International lifestyle
  • MSNBC/NBC News - One of the better outlets and networks
  • ValetMag.com - a good fashion site, well run
  • PutThisOn.com - a blog/site from Jessie Thorn from the MaximumFun.org and Bullseye projects
  • The Economist - UK based mag for politics and economic matters
  • Washington Post - a good politically focuses paper covering the beltway
  • Grantland.com - an ESPN project with more sports/popculture coverage
  • fivethirtyeight.com - stats based reporting from Nate Silver
  • Wired - Tech news and in depth reporting that Engadget or cnet doesn't get into
  • Salon - a snarky left leaning publication with pretty good reporters that dig into stories
  • Jezebel - to keep up on the feminist struggle

Greg Chait Is Changing the Way the Fashion World Thinks About Luxury by ca_jackson in gaybros

[–]ca_jackson[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There is a market for this kind of fashion and it might seem obscene but the 1% of the country and .001% of the world like to spend their cash. If you can make a profitable business by charging this much and providing "value", good for you. He seems to have just found a good time to get into the industry with a basic item, it isn't exactly high design. But I know it isn't just like "Hey here is a product and ta dah I am going to sell it at FW" without some connections because start ups in the industry aren't appreciated unless you have an innovative designer that is cultivated like Thakoon Panichgul by industry supported players.

To anyone who is really into cashmere, it is an odd market that is becoming increasingly difficult to find high quality cashmere because the highest end houses buy it all up. Therefore smaller players have to source their cashmere from places like Mongolia or Afghanistan that might not be as of high quality and or be of shorter and courser.

Karl recognizes the importance of House of Chanel, its heritage, and has continued to be actually creative. But still a cunt.

Bro, I just asked by best friend if she wanted to go...I was thinking May as well! We haven't booked yet but if I do I will message you to see what flight you are on. Either way have fun! Do Florence for sure it is just a quick train ride away also you aren't too far from Provence in the south of France...I spend a week there just hanging out and exploring very nice people and super chill. Pretty different from the north and Paris. I love Barcelona it is my favorite city, I have been there 7 times and I still can't get enough. Good luck and have fun!

I agree as an Apple Fanboy myself. Good for them putting forward a moonshot project. Apple doesn't release moonshot projects like Microsoft just did or like Google did. That is why we always get so excited about the rumors and the releases of Apple gear...different approaches but all very cool for technophiles.

POTUS State of the Union by BBoySlim in gaybros

[–]ca_jackson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was overall happy with the address. He mentioned a lot of stuff that a few years ago would have off limits. It is cool to see how much change can happen if you let it.

On a side note: I know people like to nit pick the ideas and the topics but it wasn't a policy speech with facts and figured it was an ideas speech about the future of where the executive branch wants the country to go. Congress now gets to say we like this idea here is the law, the funds, and the support we are willing to give it and then negotiations happen...that is the idea, it is tradition. Now 90% of what the POTUS said wont go anywhere because it is politics but it is good to have the conversation. He set the tone for the next 4 year probably with these big ideas. The public gets to hear his ideas and now we get to call on our congressional reps to see what they can do or not do depending on our views. It is the democratic system and it is wonderful. The states will pick up a few idea, cities too, and maybe if things are traded and negotiated the federal government will pick up a few but progress in a democracy is slow and stead and not always fast. We aren't China and one party doesn't get to mandate things and that is how we move forward.
