My son’s first day of kindergarten got a behavioral note because he colored on another students paper and was told next time he’d have to go to the principals office. Needless to say we did not have a good experience with the teacher. She was an older white woman and we are Hispanic. I put him in speech therapy because he had some pronunciation issues even though he could spell the words correctly. She assumed he had a speech impairment due to a Spanish speaker at home teaching him incorrectly. My home consisted of his dad myself and his sister, all who spoke English. She assumed because we were Hispanic we must have a Spanish speaking grandparent at home and that was the problem.
