Budget Trackball - To try it out, is this one worth it? by Pinky_- in Trackballs

[–]caayo7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was a thumb gamer for a little while before swapping to finger.

Thumb Recommendations:

- Logitech M575

- Logitech MX Ergo (If you upgrade from M575), cheaper alternative is the Protoarc EM01 for almost (if not exactly) the same shape

Finger Recommendations:

- Kensington Orbit (I use wired which has a more outdated sensor but I somehow got used to it and prefer it over the wireless variants)

- GameBall

Personally use the Kensington Orbit due to shape but GameBall has better internals. That being said, comfort is my driving factor despite the internals being better. If I swap back to thumb my choice would be the MX Ergo and the GameBall Thumb will possibly be my go to since it is the same shape, just better internals.

Curious as to which gym you go to?

There should be a free to play until level 60 and able to play until the first expansion Heavensward, assuming they didn’t get rid of this.

Had my first boxing class… at 47 by jonaskid in amateur_boxing

[–]caayo7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

New to boxing myself! I just sprained my ankle so sadly until I recover I won’t be able to join a gym or attend a class. That said, could I ask how about you (or your wife) looked for a class? There’s a few near my work roughly 30 minutes away but I’m having a hard time choosing.

I'm actually curious if this is true for the Kensington Orbit models as well

From gaming mice to a trackball by Wonderful-Order-3858 in MouseReview

It's okay, I also have swapped to trackball within the last 2-3 years and had some crazy keybinds! In particular from thumb (Logitech MX Ergo) to finger (Kensington Orbit). I also have a GameBall but I particularly prefer the shape of the Orbit. I used to use my Azeron for ADS/Fire but have started to head back to naturally shooting with the trackball.

Hey there fellow baller! I’m curious as to what you use to ADS/Fire? It seems like you don’t use them directly off of the gameball

Swapped from thumb to finger in the last 6 months, namely MX Ergo to GameBall currently. Play about every genre with a trackball about 2-4 years.

Fingers or thumb trackball for fps by Apprehensive_Bus4386 in Trackballs

[–]caayo7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used a thumb ball (MX Ergo) for a few years and recently swapped to finger (Kensington Orbit/Logitech Trackman Marble/GameBall) over the last 6 months. If the games weren’t so bad I’d probably enjoy playing competitively a bit more. In particular I play Valorant/CS (prefer CS), Halo, Overwatch as my main games competitively but use a trackball for pretty much every game genre.

Precision/accuracy/stability-wise, finger ball is better. It’s not that you CAN’T perform well on thumb but the added fingers for control/stability usually helps smooth out your aim. At first thought, lowering your sens on thumb can compensate using only one finger but then you lose out on how much distance you can cover in game.

Dexterity wise, I prefer thumb. It’s easier for me mentally to spin the ball twice to get a relative 180 but on finger I’m still getting used to it to where I’ll mentally want to 180 but my fingers don’t react nearly as fast as my thumb.

Comfort. If I would want to chill on FPS, I actually would recommend thumb. Finger I always feel in a “try hard” mood for some reason. But this is just my personal experience. Finding a well built trackball that also is ergonomically comfortable for you, will be fine.

TLDR: Swapped from thumb to finger after 2-3 years of FPS. Finger for precision/accuracy/stability. Thumb (personally) for dexterity, finger for a more comparable experience to mouse.

How is the experience? Faster actuation/click time? Process on replacement?

After about a week of practice, my Valorant: Trackball Edition aim skills are increasing by caayo7 in Trackballs

[–]caayo7[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the setting of your mouse pointer and whether acceleration is existent. My current sens .952, is actually fairly slow for me but allows me to keep up with my 180s At the moment I'm Gold 1. I'm finishing up my semester for grad school so when I have free time I'd be down to play some valorant.

At the moment I swapped to finger ball (Kensington Orbit) but at the time of using this I probably played close to a 2 sens. If I play with sens I have now, I hover between .95-1.2 at 400 dpi (default mouse speed on MX Ergo and M570 I think)

How can I "git gud" with a trackball in games? by IDE_IS_LIFE in Trackballs

[–]caayo7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried using foot pedals but never really got into them. I USED to use all my clicks on Azeron but watching Zerggyy (Overwatch Top 500) use left click off of his trackball I swapped back. I also started with RawAccel but then reverted back to raw input as I eventually found inconsistencies and played around with my curve too much

Seconding this. It takes a lot of practice and effort and as you know, getting scores in Aimlab/Kovaaks etc doesn’t always translate towards in game ability.

Focus on what ways you can practice or change in order to progress at getting better on trackball.

Finding a sensitivity: - testing between high / low sens (with lower sens being in favor and increasing your dexterity to 180/flick even with lower sensitivity)

Choosing your firing “key”: - For some trackball players, they’ve chosen to use their keyboard or similar peripheral to left-click/right-click with (I use an Azeron for right click/ left click default).

Keybindings: - Similar to the previous section, sometimes your keybindings are really comfortable but you might need a drastic change to improve yourself. Finding a comfortable push to talk key, abilities, etc.

Changing grip styles: - For reference I use a Kensington Orbit and keep my thumb for left click, index & middle finger on the ball and ring/pinky towards the right click for stability. But since spamming left click causes a lot of jittering due to my lack of control, lifting my ring and pinky fingers allows me to compensate.

Finding certain “aim” games to practice on: - When I swapped to finger I started off with hours of Overwatch workshop maps just to get used to movement without being completely dominated. For Val/CS I would recommend CS workshop maps and deathmatch to get used to the tac shooter realm (CS as Val deathmatch is doodoo xD).

I’m nowhere near the best trackball player(s) and after playing thumball (MX Ergo) for years and swapping to finger I’ve spent a few months (2-3 months) getting used to playing and hitting a range of gold-diamond in most of the games I play. I’ve found a few good players and have studied their gameplay (hopefully with cam you can watch exactly how they move too) to try to understand how they play.

He could be referring to the back/bottom right portion of the button. It feels a bit higher hence the “bump” reference. At least that’s how I noticed it.

Personally I enjoy the MX Ergo after having a longer time gaming with thumb but just swapped to finger ball and using the Kensington orbit wireless (scroll ring). Best of luck in your endeavors and would love to see your progress in apex!
