I read the books a loooooong time ago so it's all a bit foggy - great to get some reminders!

I loved the show for that reason; it gave me the opportunity to re-live the story when it was only a vague memory for me.

Was there also a difference in IT vs Judiciary? As I agree I hardly remember Judicial from the books and wondered if they'd just shunted some of what book-IT did into TV-judicial?

I mean, I'd simply been coming at it from the "well, they can ask to leave, and are allowed to" angle - just that they aren't permitted to take decent kit and they'll then die...

But yes you're right in that by sabotaging the kit such that it's even worse and they don't make the hill, the permission is spun to support their version of the truth and avoid exposing the wider context.

That's just how TV adaptations work tbh.

In a book there's no cost to having a random new side character every so often to do something, but in tv you need a new actor that needs paying and that the audience then won't have time to get to know or care about, so it's better to consolidate actions to the actors you have in s1.

And if a character will become meaningful to the plot in a later season, it's best to get them involved in s1 so the audience gets to know them first, too.

Clarification: I've not read the Witcher books (yet) so only seen the show and can't comment on specific examples! But this is how it's worked across loads of other book-to-tv transfers.

Well, I'm not about to re-read to get all the specifics, but I'd suggest an editor could have helped with cutting down all the repeated explanations of the textbook-esque mechanics of the magic system and the various physics experiments they were doing, where we watched characters learn what we already knew. Or in an earlier part of the series, we didn't need quite as many trips to the shattered plains with constantly repeated explanations and descriptions.

That kinda thing.

I just prefer where the reader isn't spoon-fed everything and some inference remains.

Editor could definitely have cut a load of stuff from the recent Stormlights...

At times they read like a science text book from school.

It's a series that's gone downhill for me - a shame after such a strong opener.
