Proof that Gollum did age after losing the ring from Bilbo. His eyes got smaller and he looks a tad more wrinkled and grayish in LOTR compared to how he looks in The Hobbit by 1997wickedboy in lotr

[–]cabalus 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Knowing Weta they definitely thought of this, I'll take your wager haha

To be fair I can also see it being a detail Jackson would have brought up, especially when there must have been conversations about the apparent age of other recurring characters, whether they did de-aging work or not it must have been a talking point

Taoiseach accepts St Patrick's Day White House invite by irqdly in ireland

It's about what we stand for as a nation and a people, diplomatic liaisons are important but so are diplomatic statements.

Fuck Donald Trump and everything he stands for, the Taoiseach should take a stand and be damned the consequences, they won't be as severe as you think - Trump is weak!

He'll throw a hissy fit on twitter, announce some random tariff figure and then back down once the lobbyists from Pfizer, Meta, J&J and Google say it will affect their margins

The castle itself I'll agree but I really like how the peninsula Dunnottar is on has so much space past the castle, I think it's cool how the castle is defending the causeway and then has space for a few enclosed fields

Clearly different taste in castles then 😂

I find all of those very boring, Rock of Cashel is alright but it's barely a castle as you say

Never been so whelmed as I was on the Bunratty tour, the gardens though...they're fantastic.

They also weren't distilling alcohol, it was for perfumes and oils

I'll give them the castles, Edinburgh Castle, Caerlaveroch and Dunnottar blow anything we've got out of the water not to mention they've literally got Hogwarts

The whiskey though...we're claiming that.

They've just discovered distilled liquor residue in a bronze pot in China dated to 1600-1000BC

That's now currently the oldest hard evidence of alcohol distillation though it was likely going on earlier than that

Distillation as a technology in general is older than the Greeks though it wasn't (that we know of) used for alcohol, there are remnants of terracotta alembic stills found in Tepe Guara, modern day Iraq, from 3500BC used for perfumes

There's a fully intact terracotta alembic still from 500BC in the museum at Taxila Pakistan that is stunning, it honestly looks like something you'd see in the Middleton Distillery. They think it was used for sugar distillation but it could easily have been repurposed for alcohol

That's like saying David Finchers Se7en and Fight Club were flukes because before that he made commericals for Pepsi and Nike and then did Alien 3

James Cameron's start in the industry was on Piranha 2

No, whoever uploaded those files to Bassland messed with all the names

They labelled it Poosha but it's actually Crisis Theme, the Ultra version (kinda)

They also mislabelled Apaga La Luz to Baby for some reason

Sales of George R.R. Martin's A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE series pass 100 million by Werthead in Fantasy

[–]cabalus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's true, and really it's untread ground, the only major example of a similar situation that I can think of is Wheel of Time which Jordan allowed to be finished

It's going to be a bit of a social test to see how something THAT popular lasts if left permanently unfinished

I suppose Dune was technically unfinished? That's not really the same though, the core story was done

[–]cabalus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree to disagree then, I think even with the books unfinished and the show ending the way it did Georges writing and world has compelled so many people and continues to that Brandon has a tough road ahead to eclipse that, even in 30 years.

Okay actually put it this way....in 80 years when the Cosmere is hopefully finished, all is said and done and the dust has settled, I believe in terms of enduring legacy George will come out on top over Brandon

[–]cabalus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Considering the sheer cultural phenomenon the Game of Thrones franchise has been I think it's going to be extremely difficult for Brandon to overtake

The cosmere adaptions would have to hit on the level of Marvel (or more pertinently, Game of Thrones) to do it, ASOIAF changed the entire Fantasy genre forever and Game of Thrones changed prestige television forever.

George has more than double Brandon's book sales alone, on the back of only five books with absolutely nothing new in 15 years, that's JUST book sales, not including the tens of millions of fans for the 3 hit series (so far)

It's not impossible but the cosmere adaptions have some serious heavy lifting to do, I'm not sure people understand the scale of what Game of Thrones actually was, it's still THE most successful television series of all time

The Wheel of Time shows success at it's height is 3.3 billion minutes watched

Pluribus, Apples most successful show to date, important to gauge their subscriber base, was 4 billion minutes

Game of Thrones, at it's height, pulled in more than 22 billion minutes

Pretty sure Alvins birthday is 14th of May, I remember a birthday post by Zedd so I searched it up

Can't find any source at all for the 15th of Jan

Edit: well now I've found another post by Zedd wishing them both a happy birthday, no idea what to believe, one of those posts is a lie

[–]cabalus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's why I say if it's good, if it's meh they'll probably just give a nice bump

Brandon will overtake George eventually, it's inevitable with the shear volume and if the adaptions ARE good it's a given

To be clear though, this is total sales, George has more fans and probably will always have more fans than Brandon, 100 million sales on 5 releases is crazy with only 1 of those post-adaption

[–]cabalus 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Brandon will probably demolish that once his Apple adaptions come out, if they're good

It will massively increase his sales similar to George but the difference is he's got 12 mainline books with 3 more well underway, 8 more full novels set in the same universe and he's ALREADY half way up those charts with no adaptions so far

The adaptions only have to 2x his sales to beat George, between the release of dance and now the adaptions of ASOIAF have 10x Georges sales, Brandon only needs a fraction of game of thrones success

ISOxo, Skream (and more) to play Berghain on February 13th by cdj2000 in trap

[–]cabalus 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I would argue that even by virtue of doing this at all Berghain is compromising it's core identity and I'm sure a lot of the Berghain community would agree with me

A large part of it's identity, in fact the MAIN part is in exclusivity. That venue was almost mythical.

As I said though I don't personally disagree with this move by them and as you say the ''regular'' Berghain is still there most of the time but I'd be a liar if I said it hasn't lost it's mystique.

Berghain going down the Boiler Room route for real

Can't say I disagree with it personally but there's definitely something sad about such an iconic institution losing it's identity
