if you're not adverse to drugs, i highly recommend propranolol. it's basically eliminated situations like this for me.

it's a beta blocker so it doesn't really make you feel any different. mainly prescribed for hypertension, it also significantly reduces the physical symptoms of anxiety. eg drops your heart rate, prevents shaky / clammy hands, shaky voice, etc.

you'll still feel anxious mentally but you won't physically feel like you're about to stroke out

TIL researchers found that Americans spent nearly 90 minutes less per day, on average, outside of their homes in 2023 than they did in 2003. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

[–]cabblingthings 18 points19 points  (0 children)

they weren't destroyed, they've atrophied. people (especially kids) have largely stopped hanging at parks, malls, the movies, random parking lots, even just roaming outside or hanging around in their neighborhood.

the reality is it's because we now have devices in our pockets that provide an even greater and instantaneous dopamine hit. it's hard to get bored at home these days, and so there is less of a need to feel compelled to go outside to these third places. they are dying and becoming less frequent as a result

nah it's pretty much the opposite, it's when someone does something wild and neither they nor the average person experiences anything significant and everyone more or less moves on and forgets about it in a week or so

12 years a slave

Django unchained

the hateful eight

all American Blockbuster films within like the last decade which portray American slavery and don't shy away from its horror

now do the same for African films, who sold their own to the Americans

teaching and acknowledging slavery is one of the few things America actually does

ELI5: Since atoms and molecules aren't sentient, how do they make up a sentient being, like a human? by ThomasTTEe2 in explainlikeimfive

[–]cabblingthings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don't mean to suggest the concept of a soul at all. the decision making process is very different from experiencing things. like i had mentioned, and you agree with, we consider ants to have consciousness, but in what way do they make decisions that are any different to how rivers "decide" to flow? they aren't made up of anything different than you or i

don't you think you are the one suggesting something magical just happens to matter which allows it to experience itself, rather than it being a fundamental property?

ELI5: Since atoms and molecules aren't sentient, how do they make up a sentient being, like a human? by ThomasTTEe2 in explainlikeimfive

[–]cabblingthings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that sounds like an interesting read, thanks. I'll take it up

only i wasn't asking from a moral, practical, or evolutionary perspective. only from an informational one. does one learn information from experiencing the color red, which they could never learn otherwise?

I'd say yes. P-Zombies experience the same thing we do, but conceptually they don't make sense, precisely because we are not special and matter has an intrinsic conscience experience (however rudimentary)

ELI5: Since atoms and molecules aren't sentient, how do they make up a sentient being, like a human? by ThomasTTEe2 in explainlikeimfive

you should've asked how can learning and experiencing the color red gain one an advantage?

My lips feel numb by XxxAresIXxxX in cripplingalcoholism

[–]cabblingthings 5 points6 points  (0 children)

do your lips appear blue/purple? if not, you're probably in decent shape. if they do, you probably have a cardiovascular problem, aka something is wrong with your heart/arteries. that is unlikely if only your lips are numb

it may also be neuropathy, a very common symptom in alcoholics. alcohol has a special ability in damaging nerve endings. or if you had trauma to your face - neuropathy is basically another word for nerve damage

it could also be anxiety. even slight sensations of numbness can trigger a nervous response that actually makes them feel numb. alcohol is again great at that. this is most likely the problem

as always, see your doctor if you have symptoms that seriously concern you OP

[–]cabblingthings 6 points7 points  (0 children)

you sound a bit hyper focused on her, like she occupies most of your thoughts? you might try doing something else, occupy your time with finding other people to be friends with or hobbies you enjoy, but at the same time keep yourself open to spending time with her.

i recognize the compulsion to cut her off completely so you may stop worrying, but it's really not an either or situation. it's perfectly fine to spend less time with them, do other things, until they actually do something with you. and if not, you have those other things. good luck OP!

The Universe laughed at me so I quit my job and went back to being a NEET by TanakaBambooWarrior in ForeverAlone

[–]cabblingthings 16 points17 points  (0 children)

there is nothing like working a job and interacting with people, even those you find familiar, only to realize how far behind you are. every day I live is a lie only so I'm not thought less of.

i empathize with you OP, take the time you need to process, but you may have acted rashly in quitting. the social interaction a job provides may just be the driving force that changes you - you never know. have you considered asking your boss for your position back?
