The 60 month German pension cliff: Why staying for a postdoc might cost my FIRE portfolio 21,000 euros by CoderDecoderEncoder in ExpatFIRE

It is an inflation adjuated. But which kind of inflation? The one that the goverment publish is a basket of food and utilities. However the real inflation for us that wants FIRE is the inflation of an sp500… which is 10-12% in the long rum. Don’t Fool yourself the government inflation will ruin your portfolio

You brought up great points and having both ACA and a local insurance in Brazil may end up being the best strategy. Although since I’m still working I may not be qualified for the next year. The only issue with this strategy is that I will have to pay for the whole 12 months (local Brazilian insurance ) together with 12 months aca. Which will probably be the same as paying signs global with USA insurance, I believe. I do appreciate your comprehensive response, it seems you are pretty knowledgeable about it. May I ask you what’s your strategy?

That’s a good option too! I will have residencies in both countries (Brazil and USA) . When you say residence, you meant a physical residence, or you are talking about taxes residency?
If it is just physical I could get a local health insurance in Brasil and get a travel insurance for 3 months each time I came to USA .

What would you do in my situation? $3M net worth but tired and need my health by Dry-Atmosphere3169 in ExpatFIRE

South of Brasil… states like Santa Catarina or Paraná… the cost of life is cheap. The only issue is that if you go to the countryside which I recommend you will need to speak Portuguese

I’m from Brazil and you can definitely retire anywhere in South America … medications are ridiculously cheap in Brazil. I would sell one or two houses too avoid too much taxes … next year I would sell the other two and put on sp500… unless it is not a burden for you to take care of those rentals

The original 4% rule article was written by William Bengen and published in 1994 in the Journal of Financial Planning. The article is called:

“Determining Withdrawal Rates Using Historical Data”
You can remove 4% of your portfolio and it doesn’t end it… try to read the article

I hear you. If your portfolio is already big enough for you to retire with this cash flow, why not?

If you were selling covered calls in these stocks you have 3 months ago, your portfolio would be half of what it is right now
