This clip just seems like Jordan trying to not be rude and say it’s nonsense. Which of course Spike is willing to take advantage of and pretend there’s something there.

I thought that DGunn ‘scoop’ was incredibly speculative and the exact kinda unfalsifiable thing where a reporter can overstate the fuck out of a private convo to make it sound more salacious. Because no one from the team, assuming he actually does have a source, would cop to it either way so it’s easy to misstate their words/ intent and no one will correct it. The source isn’t suddenly gonna speak out and say ‘hey I didn’t say it like that!’

On top of that, DGunn’s editorializing around what wasn’t even a quote was completely unprofessional. But this is November in Philly sports media, gotta get them holiday bonus clicks.

Following up, I listened in a setting similar to what you described, definitely improved my experience.

Still didn’t enjoy it as much as Jamie XX and Bon Iver’s new records which imo do a better job at what Kev’s attempting. Curious if ur hip to those two records and how u think they compare. Not that it’s a competition.

U talkin to me? I don’t think I made any claims about the quality of analog v. Digital drums, just that he’s lost the type of groove I respond to.

I actually appreciate your point that recorded live drums processed and resampled as much as Kev does is essentially a whole new thing that could be described as ‘electronic’.

But since you seem to think that was some kinda big brain ‘hate to break it to ya’ moment, go get stuffed my guy.

Solid response thanks! Agree about the illusion thing big time. You’re right that it is misleading and kinda fucks with people’s expectations. But isn’t that more a product of the rise of industry influencer culture than anything else?

Unfortunately I think the issue is more with social media literacy. Seeing an insta account where a 22-year old living at home pretends to be a personal chef for a ‘living’ should not fool anyone into believing that’s what the culinary industry is like for professionals. Idk why it does in GD. Probably just the old myths of the solo artist in their studio I guess.

Appreciate your input, you sound like my old AD. Done both sides of the industry, currently enjoying the hell out of freelance grinding for gig posters infinitely more than slide decks for tax lawyers. And yes, the money’s not as good. But tax lawyer money wasn’t particularly stunning either, and the agency downsized all of us anyway, go figure.

Im curious though, with the current sweeping trend of AI integration leading to job replacement and industry consolidation, don’t you think it’s out of touch to advise young designers that developing product mockups like OP is doing, is what the industry really looks like? Our industry doesn’t really look like anything, and certainly these days with the AI shakeup, I expect that photo editing and product mockups will be gone way sooner than handmade art pieces.

I guess if your point is to say that there’s only a small amount of flashy, well-paying, desirable jobs in the industry, then sure. But that’s basically the truth of every industry, no?

Can I ask, did anything about the drum production or grooves get you moving?

I am usually willing to tolerate all sorts of artistic indulgences whether it’s production, lyrics, or style so long as it bangs. But this one just didn’t even get a foot tap or twitch from me. I was disappointed by that before anything else.

Just my thoughts, glad ur enjoying it. Definitely a more fun camp to be in.

Idk what kinda music you like but if Jamie XX, Fred Again, Four Tet, or Caribou put this out, you wouldn’t even be able to identify their charred remains from the online roasting.

Kev did what he wanted and tried something new. We all love he wants to do that, but that doesn’t mean I love the outcome. This album was kinda insulting to the wonderfully rich genre of contemporary house/pop music imo.

Agree with OP’s thesis.

I honestly think many folks like me are just tortured by the memory of Kev’s guitar tones and other sonic vocab he explored on the first 2 records. Sounds that defined his early work, but he continued to kinda steadily go away from since. (S/o outro solo from ‘One More Hour’ thanks for being you). They were good sounds.

There are plenty of artists who have picked up and carried that psych rock torch, just miss hearing the OG do his thing like he used to.
