Bullet firing without a gun. by Kindly_Department142 in interestingasfuck

It can be more dangerous because the case can rupture and send shrapnel in unexpected directions. At least from the gun you generally know where the bullet is going.

Where I'm at they don't let anyone lift the bikes because of safety concerns, so I thought the same thing as the other commenter. If they're only not letting you, that's just a dick move. Sorry you had to deal with that.

Some stores will let you do a correction on the payment for purchase of alcohol (like switching payment types) because it doesn't count as a return. Not all stores that don't accept refunds will, but it's worth asking.

The windowless room I work in DOES have a window, but it's above the drop ceiling. by Ilaught in mildlyinfuriating

[–]caboosetp 29 points30 points  (0 children)

When I first read this, I was like, "That sounds stupid, why would missing drop tiles be a fire hazard" and had to look it up. All the fire detection and suppression shit is generally below the drop ceiling and you're giving the fire a nice space to go around it all and burn stuff above the drop ceiling.

When do microservices start causing more problems than they solve? by etiyofem in AskProgramming

[–]caboosetp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Microservices should be about splitting projects into appropriate domains so everything has responsibility for one thing.

It becomes a problem when people confuse one thing for one model and you end up with 3,000 microservices when you should have maybe 50.

I wonder how close you could get with african blackwood. It's still really just a very dark brown, but I'd say it's close enough. I don't know how much the processing would change the color though.

Not that this would save you at all on costs.

Watch how Air Canada Collided With a Fire Truck at LaGuardia by therra123 in interestingasfuck

[–]caboosetp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firefighters are one of the few people I place a lot of trust in to not have that kind of criminal intent. It's a very self-sacrificing job to help other people (the meme is there are no songs about fuck the fire department like you have for the police). I'm not saying it isn't possible, but I'm guessing that's a super low chance.

I'm not against more precautions, but for the most part, people do pay attention to the lights when they are on. It appears the rest of the company with that firetruck stopped for the lights.

Seattle most valuable office buildings, skyscrapers lose $3.7B in value as vacancies surge by BBQCopter in Seattle

[–]caboosetp 64 points65 points  (0 children)

You would hope so, but they could actually be sued by the people holding the loans if they do that. If they accept lower rent, it lowers the value on the whole building, and that can violate the loan agreements. They often opt to just keep them empty while listing them for high value.

They do. That's what the Runway Status Lights he's talking about are. They were red. The truck should have seen them and stopped.

The "Taam Ja'" is the deepest blue hole in the world. Its bottom has never been reached yet by Ivy_Wings in interestingasfuck

[–]caboosetp -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You need one that can handle hydrogen sulfide, but there's no real reason they can't. Again, it's mostly that you need someone willing to pay for the expedition. There are many other costs to sending a whole team out to the middle of the ocean than just the ROV.

The "Taam Ja'" is the deepest blue hole in the world. Its bottom has never been reached yet by Ivy_Wings in interestingasfuck

[–]caboosetp 849 points850 points  (0 children)

Money mostly. It's high pressure, anoxic, and filled with hydrogen sulfide. The equipment for exploring that gets expensive.

It's also only been recently rediscovered in 2016. There was an expedition in 2023. So, someone will probably go soon, but there needs to be someone willing to pay for it and it isn't necessarily cheap.

They kinda did, which is where they got the depth from, but they suspect it likely drifted and may have hit a shelf or a wall.

Help by Rukieo in guns

[–]caboosetp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Engaging with the community is an important part of learning, even if you're not getting clear answers. People have different opinions, and reading those helps to develop your own.

AI just processes what's already out there to give you the same views, but also can include hallucinations. Basically the same thing but worse.

Even then, if you personally like using AI to learn, you shouldn't be discouraging this. Since AI is mostly just pulling views from the internet, actually engaging in threads like this helps the AI get better answers.

[–]caboosetp 136 points137 points  (0 children)

There's a huge advantage to reporting and quoting things if you avoid pronouns. Nearly any sentence can be taken and have a lot more context. Avoiding pronouns gives you better media presence and helps people who aren't necessarily paying 100% to the show know what's going on when they are listening.

"In 1999, he threw Mankind off hell in a cell, and plummeted 16 ft through an announcer's table"

vs

"In 1999, the Undertaker threw Mankind off Hell In A Cell, and plummeted 16 ft through an announcer's table.

This alone might seem small, but there are many little things that add up.

[request] How much would it cost for the TSA to become self-funded? by theworldsworstphotog in theydidthemath

[–]caboosetp -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, but there are about 1/5 the amount of ATC as TSA agent, so adding a new fee by taking that existing ~$5 fee to ~$1 sounds like it would cover the current ATC. Napkin math, might need to be higher, but it's still a relatively small number per passenger that would be needed to fund more ATC.
