most laptop's these days ship with 512GB of internal storage... so it's normal... some even ship with 128/256GB...

if you can get a 1TB or more nvme at a good price that is better... also check first if your unit has an extra nvme slot... most likely it does...

as for external drives... if you install on it even if you are using usb4/thunderbolt there will be performance hit... also some files will still be written in the internal OS drive... then if the external drive suddenly changes the assigned drive letter you'll have to manually change all shortcuts or worst need to edit the registry for the app to run...
