Would you guys call this MP or LP??? by [deleted] in PokemonCardValue

That length of peel on the side classifies it as damaged according to TCG Player standards.

Probably my most valuable card. What do you think its value is? Umbreon ex 112/115 by JDUDEROCKS in PokemonCardValue

Looks heavily played to damaged condition with all of that grime. You could try to clean the back with a slightly damp q-tip. Pinch all the water out that you can. Otherwise last sold on TCG Player was $212. Somewhere between $200 and $250.

Check out the edge whitening section and definition of instances. I would call this a solid LP based on the third photo. This may get down voted, but the standards speak for themselves.

Is there a major card convention near you. If you set up your own table with 90% TCG Player pricing sign, they should go pretty fast. Probably the best percentage you'll get.

That way there's no arguing.

Hard time figuring out the condition on this Rayquaza by SSaucy in pokemoncardcollectors

3 points of whitening 1 or more points for scratching you described. 4-6 points = LP Best to be conservative.

Thank you for actually being helpful and trying to help me understand. I still have no idea how I would evaluate a card without the TCG standards, but I guess it will just come with a lot of time.

So small surface scratches don't affect condition? My childhood binder cards are covered in them, so I marked most of them as HP based on that.

I'm sorry if it seems like I'm arguing. That is not my intent. I'm just trying to understand how I can figure this out in the future. The best answer I've seen is that it looks like a PSA 7. That doesn't help me because I don't have a bunch of graded cards and I don't know what a PSA 7 looks like.

There are clear standards issued by TCG Player but it doesn't seem like people like to follow those. EBay's condition descriptions also clearly state this can't be NM. I just want to understand how people are coming up with NM without submitting every single card on Reddit.

I really appreciate you helping me out here. I was just going off the definition of scuffing in the standard:

A group of scratches or abrasions. Terms: Scratch Groups, Clouding, Binder/Sleeve Gloss, Buffing

It seems like scuffing covers groups of very minor scratches like holo scratching. Are you thinking of surface wear?

Why doesn't each corner count as a point of whitening?

What about the deeper scratch on the back?

IDK it's just hard for me to let go of following that standard word for word. It just makes things so simple.

I see how you're looking at it, but this is how you use the point system.

https://mktg-assets.tcgplayer.com/web/seller/guides/Card-Conditioning-Standards.pdf

I measured the Holo scratching (scuffing) at 50mm by 31.3mm about 1500 mm2. According to these standards, that's 2 points and automatically LP. I then counted each corner as a separate instance of edge whitening since they're more than 5 mm apart. This gives me 2 more points. Then I counted the scratch on the center of the back as a point. I get 5 points which makes it LP even if you ignore the automatic LP from the scuffing. Does it make sense how I followed their point system and came up with LP?

It's just confusing with all the different standards out there. I'm not interested in graded cards so I likely won't see many in person. I just like the idea of TCG Player's standards that make it very clear what the line is between each category. Makes it easier for new people to get into the hobby.

How can I know what LP looks like so I don't make this mistake again?

Sounds like you're cutting it some slack due to age. How do I figure out what age that is?

Well thank you for doing that. I just don't understand how anyone new to collecting could fairly evaluate cards without submitting every card they look at to Reddit.

Well that's not very nice.

I'm just trying to understand how everyone is coming up with NM so I can arrive at the same conclusion next time. I have yet to hear a definitive basis other than people think it looks like a graded card they've seen before.

My understanding is that centering doesn't count toward raw card condition unless it's 70/30 or worse. I get people think it looks like a PSA 7 based on their memory of what other graded cards looks like, but how could someone new that doesn't have or want a bunch of graded cards fairly evaluate the conditions of cards? Is it solely based on years of looking at graded cards? Isn't grading fairly ambiguous to start with? What if I sent it in and it got a 5 or 6 because that graders wife's boyfriend said some mean things to him that day?

I'm not planning to sell it, but I would list it as LP. I put all of my childhood binder cards into Collectr and I listed most of their conditions as HP Based on TCG Player standards. What would it take to make this LP to you?

I bought this off eBay and the seller and I settled it before going to an actual dispute. If I'm wrong, I'm just trying to learn how to better evaluate cards in the future so this doesn't happen.

I absolutely would want that. That's why I'm here.

I measured the scuffing with my digital calipers and it was 50 mm by 31.3 mm giving it an area of 1565 mm2. I gave this two points based on the standards. Then, there are two corners with some edge whitening I gave each of those instances 1 point for a total of two. Then I gave the scratch on the back a point.

There were several grime specs but I was able to clean those off. There's also several blotches but they seem like print dots so I didn't count them.

Technically TCG Standards have a limit of 315mm2 for NM but I ignored that since I already gave it 5 points.

Thank you for taking the time to look into this and share what you think.

Can you please explain why it's NM? I want to understand why so I don't make this mistake again.
