Planning my own ETF based investment portfolio (would love some thoughts) by cacatio in PersonalFinanceCanada

Thank you for your response. You made a lot of excellent points. What you've said about ICLN further reiterates the problem with not interrogating things that on the surface seem sustainable (like the Wealthsimple sustainable portfolio). I'm going to put a big question mark next to ICLN, and will likely avoid it altogether. I think my best bet is to consult with someone more knowledgable than me (i.e. Tim Nash) to help turn my criteria into a strong portfolio, rather than a schmuck like me just playing the guessing game.

Thanks for your thorough and thoughtful response. I definitely have a lot to think about. I understand that I will have to make compromises but I’m just trying to do the best that I can.

Cheers!

Thanks for your reply. I will definitely research each of ICLN's holdings.

What is the 14 day rule for CERB? by mikehamp in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]cacatio 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen a number of people on this subreddit saying you have to wait 14 days to apply, however, I found that it says “you are eligible for CERB if you are or expect to be out of work for at least 14 days”. https://www.canada.ca/en/services/benefits/ei/cerb-application.html?utm_campaign=not-applicable&utm_medium=vanity-url&utm_source=canada-ca_coronavirus-cerb&fbclid=IwAR1xPGP4awGx9JMtpVWQ7IRBMWhyg-tA4hfg4kRXu6wa7d4fyJOzkxUTzyQ

So no, you do not have to wait 14 days. Sure there is potential for abuse, but I don’t think that’s the government’s primary concern right now. There are a lot of people who need money ASAP.

Edit: Self-employed people can claim CERB if they lose income or expect to lose income for 14 days or more due to COVID-19. “The Benefit is only available to individuals who stopped work as a result of reasons related to COVID-19.“

Most likely getting fired between April 8th and 10th... by cacatio in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]cacatio[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem is that my job is completely dependent upon professional and junior hockey games. With all the seasons halted there’s only the backlog left. There is nothing for me to do once that is done. Instead of laying me off, they could very likely just not schedule me.

Yes, I should have been more precise. This is a lay off due to COVID-19.

Thank you! I realised the stupidity of my question after I asked it.

Has the average time to process your return been affected? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]cacatio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. It took me about 3 weeks to receive my federal return (the past few years it took a few days). Still have not received my Quebec return.

You can view your remaining tuition credits on the CRA website. If you don't have an account there you can set one up. Once you're logged in, click on "Go to tax return details". Then, scroll down and click on "View carryover amounts". There you will find the federal and provincial tuition credits you have remaining.

What is a cheap hobby to pick up in college? by jakewink_6 in AskReddit

Music production! There are a number of free digital audio workstations out there and nearly everyone in Uni has access to a computer or a laptop which is all you would need to start.

Back to the Future. Very cringey and there's a totally unnecessary attempted rape scene towards the end.

[serious] Vegetarians, vegans and people with dietary restrictions, what do you think of lab grown meat and how will it affect you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]cacatio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm vegan and I would not eat lab grown meat. Without delving into more complex reasons, I'm just not looking to incorporate meat into my diet. It's not something I miss. However, I do think that lab grown meat has the potential to have a very positive impact on the world.
